Check the "Eyecatches" page on Kanzentai. We have all fifteen DragonBall Kai eyecatches up, and you can click the images for a higher resolution, although they aren't anything like 1080p.

It's not like you could even get 1080p off a DBK broadcast, anyway, the thing's aired at 1440x810... (since it's 1440x1080 animation cropped to a 16:9 ratio).

Actually, Kai is broadcast in 1440x1080, which is anamorphic. Basically, the pixels aren't square, but actually rectangular (they're 1.333 times wider than they are tall). So your TV/cable box coverts the 1440x1080 (4:3) signal into 1920x1080 (16:9), essentially giving you back that 1.333 loss from having rectangular pixels. I know it's a little more complex than that, but Kai is broadcast in 1080p. Now, from what I understand, this isn't something we really have to concern ourselves with in the U.S. because nothing is broadcast in 1080p, only 720p. And speaking of 720p, most Kai RAWs and fansubs are only released at 720p because they're easier to deal with than 1080p.

Even then, wouldn't the Japanese 1080p broadcast still be a sort of "zoomed upscale" from what is actually a 4:3 1080p master? Makes more sense for the rippers to downscale to 720p in that case, anyway.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, the whole thing is just upscaled anyway, so it isn't really that big of a deal. You can even tell it has been upscaled on the cropped-480p DVDs. No wonder it's so obvious in HD! ;)

Is Kanzentai not going to update the eye catches with the 4:3 versions as the sets come out?

I don't plan on picking up all the sets, so if people want to send them to me, I'll gladly add them. Otherwise, I'll probably just keep the 16:9 broadcast eyecatches.
