Vegeta Calling Goku "Goku?"
Probably could've thought of a better thread title, but that's beside the point.
Is there ever an episode, English dub or Japanese, or any medium whatsoever, inwhich Vegeta refers to Goku as anything other than Kakarroto?
Just curious. I personally can't recall Vegeta ever doing this, nor can I find any evidence of it happening.
Any answers?

That's in chapter 388 (Z chapter 194), for the record. I think that's the only instance in the manga where Vegeta calls him "Goku".

In the dub when Vegeta is thinking about Goku in the rejuvenation chamber he thinks of him as "Goku". If that counts.

I remember in the dub something along the lines of "This Goku you speak of, surely you don't mean Kakorot?"
It was in the Saiya-jin arc obviously.

Re: Vegeta Calling Goku "Goku?"
I recall on two occasions in the anime (dub) where Vegeta says Goku.
1) When fighting against Nappa and Vegeta, Krillin laments on Goku hurrying up to get to the battlefield. Vegeta retorts, "Goku? Is he strong?" This was in the original ocean dub, and I can't remember if it carried over.
2) When questioning Trunks' claim of being a SSJ, (IIRC) Vegeta's says something along the lines of "the one you call Goku.".
Other than that, I don't believe he has purposely referred to Goku by that name. Unless you count GT.

Those god-awful dub episodes on the tail end of the Freeza arc; Vegeta questions a bird-like soldier who doesn't believe Freeza is dead, and asks if he's seen a man named "Goku." I think he kills him later.
Anyone wish to confirm if he does this in the Japanese version?

A Japanese title, "Koeteyaru... Gokuu wo!! Sentou Minzoku Saiya-jin no Ou". Or "I Will Surpass Him... Him, Gokuu! The King of the Fighting Race, the Saiyans". Or Mr. Simmons' translation, "I Will Overcome Goku!! The King of the Saiyan Warrior Race".
The second part of the title does imply that Vegeta is speaking the whole title. Though it could be Tenshinhan, Yumcha, Piccolo or Kuririn. (I'm tempted to start spelling it "Kurilin". Dunno why.) Actually, thinking about it, it could be all of them collectively.

I remember reading somewhere that in FUNimation's dub he says it around 7-8 times.

Re: Vegeta Calling Goku "Goku?"
Vegeta almost always addresses Goku by his Saiyan birth name, Kakarot, but has on rare occasion addressed him as Goku. Vegeta says Goku's name eight times, only two of which stating that Kakarot is Goku.
The first two were before he realized that Goku was Kakarot, during his battle on Earth, and the third is when he said Goku must be Kakarot. The fourth was when he was healing in the rejuvenation tank during the Namek Saga.
The fifth and sixth was during the Garlic Jr. Saga, when he is searching for Goku, he referred to him as Goku when speaking to the Frieza soldiers twice, perhaps figuring that if Goku had come across them and introduced himself, he would've used his Earth name (though this is not to be so easily dismissed as non-canon, the moment after Garlic Jr. is sucked into the Dead Zone, Vegeta calls him Kakarot again).
The seventh time was in "Welcome Back Goku" when Vegeta says to Trunks "Kakarot, the one you call Goku, and I are the only Saiyans left." The eighth time was during the Super 17 Saga, when he was incapacitated by Super 17, Dr. Myuu boasted that no one could stop them with Goku trapped in Hell; Vegeta immediately regained consciousness and shouted, "Did you say Goku?!" Additionally, in the original manga, Vegeta once refers to Goku as (Son) Goku after being shown his full power during the opening match of the Cell Games (after Satan lost his) when remarking at the extent of his true power, and Vegeta refers to him as Goku aloud when he asks for Dende to wish that his power be restored to full strength. The first of these instances is simply shortened to "So that's his true power..." in the Viz manga.

Re: Vegeta Calling Goku "Goku?"
@Goku100xKamehameha: Well done, you've done a brilliant job of swiping that from the DB wikia.
Only perhaps 3 of these instances are even in the manga though, and those are just stuff like "this 'Goku' guy must be Kakarot". There is actually that one instance Shinobi-03 gave earlier from before the Cell Games, but the wikia doesn't even mention that, the one legitimate example!Vegeta almost always addresses Goku by his Saiyan birth name, Kakarot, but has on rare occasion addressed him as Goku. Vegeta says Goku's name eight times, only two of which stating that Kakarot is Goku.
You know, call me nit-picky, but I don't think that Vegeta wondering who this "Goku" guy is and then saying that it must be Kakarot is the same thing as him personally referring to Goku as such. The first two were before he realized that Goku was Kakarot, during his battle on Earth, and the third is when he said Goku must be Kakarot.
He doesn't say that in the Japanese manga. Maybe this is an anime mistake, or a dub mistake, or simply a wikia mistake. The fourth was when he was healing in the rejuvenation tank during the Namek Saga.
OK, so apparently at least one of these incidents is true of the Japanese anime too, but anime-only stuff needs to be labeled as such. Alright, so they do say it's in the Garlic jr arc, but they really need to have a separate count for instances in the manga and for the extra screw-ups found in the anime. Anyone know what that last bit about "this is not to be so easily dismissed as non-canon" is supposed to mean? Vegeta calls Goku "Kakarot" again after Garlic Jr. is sucked into the Dead Zone, therefore...?The fifth and sixth was during the Garlic Jr. Saga, when he is searching for Goku, he referred to him as Goku when speaking to the Freeza soldiers twice, perhaps figuring that if Goku had come across them and introduced himself, he would've used his Earth name (though this is not to be so easily dismissed as non-canon, the moment after Garlic Jr. is sucked into the Dead Zone, Vegeta calls him Kakarot again).
Again, I don't think Vegeta acknowledging that other people call him "Goku" is really the same thing as calling him "Goku" himself. The seventh time was in "Welcome Back Goku" when Vegeta says to Trunks "Kakarot, the one you call Goku, and I are the only Saiyans left."
It's been ages since I've seen GT. Anyone want to confirm if this in the Japanese? The eighth time was during the Super 17 Saga, when he was incapacitated by Super 17, Dr. Myuu boasted that no one could stop them with Goku trapped in Hell; Vegeta immediately regained consciousness and shouted, "Did you say Goku?!"
These are both pure BS. In the Japanese manga, at the Cell Games Vegeta says kore ga aitsu no shin no pawaa ga..., "So that's his true power", exactly what Viz has it as. Maybe some halfwit scanslator somehow messed up and translated the line as "So this is Goku's full power". The Boo arc example is even more spurious: Vegeta never asks Dende to wish for Goku's stamina to be restored in the manga! Maybe somebody saw one of Dende's lines where he makes the wish and somehow mistook it for Vegeta talking, since Dende calls Goku "Goku" of course.Additionally, in the original manga, Vegeta once refers to Goku as (Son) Goku after being shown his full power during the opening match of the Cell Games (after Satan lost his) when remarking at the extent of his true power, and Vegeta refers to him as Goku aloud when he asks for Dende to wish that his power be restored to full strength. Wasn't the only time Vegeta called him Goku was when he admitted at the end of the Buu saga 'Goku!! You are number one!!!" and even then, he didn't say it to the guy directly, he was busy fighting Buu.

No, he still says Kakarrot at the end of that scene. I've always felt that if he had used "Son Goku" instead at the end of that scene that it would have blown the doors off of Vegeta's character development, but if you really think about it, it's already pretty big of Vegeta to monologue for a few minutes about Goku being stronger than him.Coola Yagami wrote:Wasn't the only time Vegeta called him Goku was when he admitted at the end of the Buu saga 'Goku!! Also in the second episode of GT when the kidnappers call Vegeta to ransom Goku, he says "What? Goku? Do with him as you will".
That's most likely the closest you will get anime wise. Again, it's GT though.

Re: Vegeta Calling Goku "Goku?"
Those are just like most of the examples in Z. He's not outright addressing him as "Goku," just using that name around other characters that are familiar with it. He's basically quoting whoever he's talking to in those cases.the_abberration wrote:In the JP sub he says: "What did you say? Goku this, Goku that...you stupid bastards."

The only times worth noting are the rare occasions in which he refers to him as "Goku" completely on his own.
