Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
Something which I thought was odd...in the original Dragon Ball, Chi-Chi only ever appeared twice: when they were getting the DB from Gyu-mao, and the second time, at the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budokai. Do you think she should have had more of a role in Dragon Ball? I know there probably wasn't any need for her to pop up in the series, but it may have mixed things up, say, if they had some plot twist where the Red Ribbon Army kidnapped Chi-Chi or something like that.

I kind of like it as is. I've never cared for her much to begin with though. If you haven't seen it the anime actually had an episode involving Chi Chi during the Silver saga.
Edit: She also has cameos spattered about, they really did give her a much larger role when it comes to the anime, be in DB or DBZ.

Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
I think it was a good idea that Chi Chi had a small role (in the manga) at the time, considering the goal Mr. Toriyama (I assume) was trying to accomplish. Namely, trying to surprise the reader as well as Goku and co. with her appearing at the tournament.
I'm quite sure a few people had forgotten her apperance in the earlier volumes of the manga, so it probably was an "oh yeah" moment for them. The anime kind of takes away from this by having her pop up more.

Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
She would have gotten in the way, she can't do anything without that helmet. I could use MUCH less of her in Z as well. The whole 'Gohan isn't going to fight and I'm going to yell at every strong man on the planet an have them flinch at me' got old FAST. Gohan was going to fight no matter what [after training with Piccolo] and if I could blow up entire planets without blinking, I would have [vocally] put her in her place the second time she yelled at me.
Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
It would have been nice, though Toriyama would probably have to develop her combat abilities to keep her interesting/relevant. Which itself would be quite cool, actually. More prominent female characters would have been awesome.
Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
The anime does a decent job of this. Her contact with Goku is still limited so it's a shock when she appears at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, but her extra appearances in the Red Ribbon and Piccolo arcs are pretty fun.
In general, I think the Dragon Ball anime does a great job with it's added side-plots, especially ones which bring back neglected manga characters. I really enjoy all the added Pilaf, for example, and it's cool to see it check in with Suno and the like every so often.

I think ChiChi's reappearances in the anime were very nice.

Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
I think if her character had developed a little differently post DB and pre-Z, like if she had continued training and got to fight in the saiyajin and Freeza arcs, that would've been neat. I like the idea of a martial arts couple working together in battle. The only real example there is in the series is Kuririn and 18, but that's not until the very end of the manga and by then Kuririn's kind of half-retired.
On hiatus.

Of course, if she appeared more between here initial appearance and the tournament, it would kind of diminish the surprise of her showing up again all of a sudden all grown up. The anime does this a little bit too, with the pieces of filler where she and Goku meet a few more times as kids.
Yeah, and once you finished with that, I could help you go look for your teeth.LeprikanGT wrote:Gohan was going to fight no matter what [after training with Piccolo] and if I could blow up entire planets without blinking, I would have [vocally] put her in her place the second time she yelled at me.

I totally second this. There's not a writer in the world that can make Chi Chi likeable. (u_u)hleV wrote:I had enough of her.

She should have been more involved with the combat. Her nagging would have defeated the Saiyans, the Ginyu Force, and Freeza with ease.

Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
Are you implying CHI CHI was going to knock my teeth out? If I was as strong as Goku...or pretty much any Z warrior, anything she would do wouldn't make me bat an eye. If they can take punches straight in the face and not move, they can tell an overprotective woman to shut up and be fine with it. The same goes for Bulma.Herms wrote:Of course, if she appeared more between here initial appearance and the tournament, it would kind of diminish the surprise of her showing up again all of a sudden all grown up. Yet for some reason......... they still cower before the power of raw bitchitude of Bulma and Chichi.
Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
I tend to stay out of these threads because they are filled with those who are but children, unable to appreciate grown women. See, in the time of life when the power of manhood first arises, they grow increasingly chafed at being under the rule of their mothers. Thus, a woman who cares for her child's safety and worries for their livelihood is irritating to them, a Bitch. Instead their attention is drawn to the Whore, whose allures strike at the center of all young men's thoughts, and to the Icequeen, whose air of unattainability reminds them of their crushes at the middle school.Zephyr wrote:And where's Rocketman?
Take note of the responses above, if you do not believe me. "Tell an overprotective woman to shut up" for one. First, the word 'overprotective' implies that Bitch reacts to a threat that does not exist. No one can claim that these threats do not exist without baldfacedly lying, it is merely a guise to hide that Manchild is disgusted with a woman telling him what to do. Unable to state this against the figure he truly wishes to, his Mother, Manchild lets off that steam by blighting characters who resemble her too closely.
Which leads into the second; it contains the inherent misogyny of the pubescent male. Having spent one's childhood believing that girls have 'cooties' and otherwise segregating themselves from them (again, save for the domination of the matriarch), the onset of puberty and the overpowering urge to fuck cause a disconnect. While the conscious mind is still stuck in the 'gurls b icky' stages of boyhood, the sex drive has cocked it and locked it and is demanding greater attention be paid to these fascinating creatures possessing breasts. As such, the misogyny creeps in - the woman who thinks independently is maligned as a 'bitch' for not bowing to the will of Manchild who wants to go play with the Boys and fuck her whenever he wants and how dare this mouthy broad dare to question my commands or the wisdom of throwing her child into life or death situations.
It forms an interesting contrast to the Icequeen character, in fact, as she is also resistant to the whims of Manchild but does not get nearly the same vitrol. I believe this is because the Icequeen is tacticly approving, despite her outward rejection. Instead of Bitch, who totally disagrees with Manchild, Icequeen urges him on. She is simply playing a grand game of 'hard-to-get', firing up the primeval desire on males for the glory of the hunt. Her frozen countenance also means that when Manchild dethraws her with a hot beef injection (and he will always dethaw her - the character is not designed for any fate but to fall to the Manchild's whim) he has secured a grand victory, a challenge hard-won.
On the other end of the spectrum is Whore. Her appeal is so blinding clear I scarcely need devote a paragraph to it, but for the interests of completeness I shall. She is the easy lay, the victory with no risk. Any objections or resistance are merely for show, not as in the grand hunt as with Icequeen, but as a sham hunt. But this serves its own draw, as the utter domination of the sex drive in the aforementioned pubescent males pushes them towards easy prey if available. Just as a dog, though genetically identical to a wolf, will sit on its ass eating the dog kibble that makes its own gravy rather than take the dangerous route of attempting to bring down an elk, so too is the Manchild drawn to the speedy and simple path of the Whore.
And that is why everybody who hates Chichi has tiny balls.

Re: Chi Chi: Should she have had more of a role in DB?
No... Chi-chi isn't a bitch for being over protective... Chi-chi is a psychotic bitch who is so desperate for man-meat that she seems to give her "heart" to any man she crosses in the street during her pre-teens. Let's not forget she was seconds away from fixing her obsession on Yamcha.
Then in her young adulthood, she hunts down a boy she knew for, apparently, one afternoon. A boy who evidently had no concept of sexual dimorphism and had to pat her crotch to figure out what she was. Despite this man-child having completely forgotten about her, possessing no knowledge of marriage and showing a strong distaste in having physical contact with her... she forces him to marry her.
Keeping these facts in mind, she somehow manages to conceive his child. How? I don't know. Even Goku's long-time friends and teacher seem dumbfounded at this turn of events. Goku and Chi-chi are never once shown sharing the least bit of mutual affection for each other in the manga. I can only imagine it involved narcotics and a turkey baster.
Regardless, after having her prized child, she treats her former object of obsession with so much spite that she has no qualms about literally leaping over his broken, bleeding body without so much as a glance to check on her son. After which, she vehemently refuses to acknowledge Goku's pain despite the fact that, last she heard, he sacrificed his life to save her spawn and had been dead for a year.
Chi-chi is an awful, disturbed character who stalks and subsequently abuses the man she forced into marriage while simultaneously denying her son's natural gifts and interests to suit her desires.

Chichi is a gag. Accept it, find it funny. Or don't.
That's all there really is to the situation.
