All About Toriyama

Post by SparkyPantsMcGee » Wed Jan 05, 2011 9:07 pm

I wanted to know more about Akira Toriyama. Growing up, and still to this day, he has been one of my biggest inspirations. Dragonball was what excelled my interest in cartooning. For better or worse my career of choice(though it has now been moving towards Game Art) has excelled because of Dragonball. However, even with being on this site for almost two years(officially two in two weeks) I still know very little about the man himself. I think I brought up this topic when I first started on here, but I wanted to know if there have been any recent interviews with him. Anything on Kai, the Evolution movie, his work on Dragonball Online or hell anything recent about the Z.

He's the creator of one of the biggest cartoons in the world and has been one of my biggest inspirations; and yet, I know nothing about him. All I really know about him come from those little blurbs before each manga volume...and that's not very much.

Do you guys have any insight on the man behind one of the greatest shows on the planet?
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

Interesting stuff, thanks for the help.

I'd also like help finding interviews(especially newer ones).

I think the latest interview with Toriyama is from the 2nd Extreme Battle Collection guide book. Which was already translated by Kanzentai.

very cool interview! I had a feeling Piccolo and Vegeta were his favorites. You can tell just by the way he wrote them. It seems all of his favorites got the most character development.

There's more Toriyama interviews in the interview section of Kanzentai's translations page (yes, I have no shame).

Toriyama has two children, Sasuke (son) and Kikka (daughter). Their births were mentioned in the tankobon intros (I forget exactly when they were born), but only Sasuke's name was revealed. (I actually learned his daughter's name from that developer room ending of Chrono Trigger, where Toriyama had a secret message to his kids.) I don't remember if he's ever said the name of his wife, or much else about her, but she came up with the name "Kamehameha."

I hear Toriyama is a pretty prative person which is why you don't see that much interviews of him that much IIRC?

Vegeta is amoung his favourites now? Up until now I heard he was his least favourite.
He stated more than once that Piccolo was his favourite and either Satan/Goku.
Oh well, years go by and feeling change I suppose...

When did this exactly come out? The lastest one I read was the one he did with Eiichiro Oda in 2007/2008.

2010 and I thought Vegeta was he's least favorite because of his elitist attitude.

I don't remember if her real name is revealed. But she was a mangaka with the pen name MIKAMINATI.
She made some little mangas for BIRDLANDPRESS. Talking about the travel she made with Akira to Shangai and Beijing (probably in the year 1984).
There are some photos of her too.

There's a lot of information of Akira and even his family in the Birdland press.

Unfortunately I have only 4 editions and I'm not finding more editions anywhere here in japan.

Okay, now that I had time to go over the interview more carefully the most interesting part to me was :
"Toriyama
I intended to leave everything up to them, so I don't think I had anything in particular. But I did warn them when I felt they were moving too much in a certain direction. "

I kinda wish I knew where it was the the anime staff was doing wrong taht he actually felt the need to correct them.

When you read these interveiws you kinda understand why there are so many inconsistencies in DB. He mostly never planned anything ahead.

And LOL at Toriyama also atmitting that the anime was dragging.

I don't really trust the character chart thing from the latest book all that much, but he did do a great mention....so atleast we have that.

I'm really interested in this interview since it's like the only one with him there....on the couch....on japanese Oprah.

That interview was really neat. I'm pretty sure it was done before Dr. Slump was over, though, so there wasn't any info about Dragon Ball. That's right, I forgot that his wife was shown in the interview! It's been a while since I watched it; it think it's not on Youtube anymore?

That blog was wrong about there not being recent pictures of Toriyama, by the way. There were photos of him in issue #3 of the American Shonen Jump, back in 2004. There may be even newer pictures of him, but I haven't seen any yet.

This interview happened not long after Toriyama's wedding.

This was the first topic on the interview.

I downloaded it before being deleted.

EDIT
I can upload it somewhere if I have time to search and find the files...
