Episode #0252! VegettoEX, Meri, Hujio, and Corey are all in-house to discuss what the Hell just happened to "DragonBall Kai". By diving back into corporate presentation and financial reports, we are able to paint a crystal-clear picture of just why exactly the show was "refreshed" in the first place, if their plan even partially came to fruition at all, and what we can expect for the future of the franchise. Amen to that! Well, unless you really want the discussion to go all over the place at points.VegettoEX wrote:Don't ever do whiskey shots right before recording a podcast.

Re: Episode #0252 (20 March 2011)
Corey, you drunken SOB, your "gritty" Dragon Ball ramblings got me thinking. Goku beat up an evil alien overlord on Christmas Eve. John McClane beat up Alan Rickman on Christmas Eve. Coincidence? I think not! It has become clear to me. The next step in Dragon Ball's evolution is a badass gritty series. Goku: he's a loose cannon nyoi-bo wielder who doesn't play by the rules!
On a more serious note, good episode. It was a bit heavy on numbers (and alcoholic beverages consumed), but it was very informative. Thanks for another great show!

Re: Episode #0252 (20 March 2011)
Thank you so much for those out-takes/sound tests at the very very end there, because those theories on a "gritty" DB and what-if's related to Ms. Nozawa were scary. @_@ The out-takes/sound tests with the singing lifted my spirits back up. :3
"Gritty" Goku; scary stuff, do not want! D: I like "cute" Goku, I want him to stay as he is character-wise even though they'll eventually need to re-cast his voice.
Hopefully, Chatku the character failed too hard for Toei to ever consider messing with Goku.
I agree that the Jump Tour special really was a shot in the arm. I needed that special so badly; I'm not sure if I'd be around as much as I am if it weren't for that.
Oddly enough, the Raging Blast 2 special didn't hold the same magic for me; I think it was because that felt like it wasn't aimed at me the way the Jump Tour special was. I know that's kind of weird to say. ^^;
"Ossu!" left me wanting more. I loved seeing Vegeta's "Dammit! Pay attention to me, Kakarrotto! I'm your rival!" stuff from the Cell and Buu arcs coming back to bite him in the rear with unhappily-bored Goku deciding to make use of Vegeta as his personal entertainment. I loved that Vegeta has a brother that he never decided to bring up along with how he reacts to it like this is normal while everyone else freaks out. Gohan manipulating Goku into going to the party with them (and Goku's ensuing daydream about all that food) were wonderful. The bizarre daikons in the garden were a lot of fun.
That's the feeling I should get from DB, or anything really entertaining; give me something so much fun that it'll leave me wanting more of it.
DBO also helped to a degree; learning what happened to Goku and Vegeta in the future, the whole running-away-together-in-secret, battle-to-the-death-somewhere-deep-in-outer-space-so-they-die-in-glorious-battle-instead-of-dying-from-rapid-aging-and-old-age had this bittersweet-ness that appeals to my inner teenage fangirl. I'm not that hyper person all the time anymore, but stuff like that and the Jump Tour can easily summon her.
Concerning Kai being over; while it's a shame that for people who really liked it and I do feel bad, I'm personally not bothered much by it ending. As long as I get my U.S. release of Ultimate Butoden, I'll be fine. (I've wanted a game where you can equip clothing for years now; they finally made one. Please, please let it come out in my country.)
Also, I've still got Dragon Ball Z - Abridged; and that's leagues better than Kai as a shortened Z in my opinion. It's given me stuff like the "muffin button", Kuririn the "space duck", "DODGE!", and more. :3

Man... that was probably the best podcast episode ever. Extremely insightful, serious discussion, yet hilarious at the same time. Some of those theories were damn well put, and the final minutes were sad but realistic.
It's pretty insane just how badly Dragon Ball has fallen off in Japan. Over saturation is the only possible explanation I could think of, because there's no reason why Kai should have fucked up so badly. As you guys mentioned, ratings were great, and the Japanese public still seems to love the characters. So just why isn't the merchandise selling?
Someone mentioned something along of the lines of "People are willing to watch the episode for free when it broadcasts, and nothing more." I think that's the best explanation of the whole situation.
And no, there is no way One Piece can top the success of last year. Strong World was huge. But I don't think the drop will be drastic. They continue to increase the initial shipment of each new manga volume to higher, record-breaking numbers, and continue to sell out each shipment. It truly is the new hotness. Dragon Ball has passed the torch.
So until we get a kanzenban-like resurgence a few years from now, Dragon Ball is going to be on a break. These are going to be interesting times. Hell, I joined DaizEX in only 2006, so I've only been "hardcore" into the scene during it's big 2003-present resurgence.

Very interesting podcast episode, it really is difficult to hear that Dragon Ball is going into decline after so many years. I really hope Dragon Ball does not stay in the dark for too long.

Great discussion, I really enjoyed it! And I feel for Meri, because I'm allergic to cats too! The next few years are going to be interesting for Dragon Ball and Daizenshuu EX/Kanzentai (Or should I say Kanzenshuu EX?) especially since both websites have never had a real downtime in Dragon Ball stuff in their existences. There is still many questions that need answers. Will FUNimation find it worth it to commission a Kai Boo arc? What will Viz do with the franchise (maybe a Kanzenban/Daizenshuu release)? Will the Jump Super Anime Tour Special and Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans get dubbed/released? Will Ultimate Butoden get released in the States? What about Zenkai Battle Royale? So much stuff I'm curious about...

I certainly think it's time for a long break. Hopefully then Dragon Ball may come back in x amount of years stronger, faster and better. Really enjoyed the podcast per the norm. They're the highlight of my Sundays... or Mondays... or Tuesdays....occasionally a Wednesday or a Thursday.

Totally late, but.....
SSJ3 for Trunks makes sense since he achieved Ascension pretty much by himself. And it still makes more sense than SSJ3 for Gohan. Ultimate Gohan was his highest form. And SSJ4 is a little not canon....
I support Trunks to the max and I hope he makes it in to many games with his new form.
Just saiyan...

Yes, I was very wasted. And I supplied the Crown Royal that put me over the top. Author of my own demise I was. Guess that's what I get for not drinking anymore really and then hammering a few beers and doing two shots of (delicious) Canadian Whiskey. Hopefully I was an amusing drunk and not annoying with my overly talkative ass.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun as always. Thanks to Mike and Meri for being great hosts.
