Is it weird that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
Don't get me wrong, it's still one of my two favorite animes ever. But it's just soooooooo slow. I tried watching it twice in the last month: the part where the Cell Jrs are beating up the Z-Fighters in order to make Gohan unleash his power and the part where Goku and Piccolo are fighting Raditz. I can pretty much say that absolutely nothing happened, and I can't watch Kai because I can't get used to the new voices and edits. Just wondering if anyone else felt this way.

If that's the case then you should definitely give the manga a shot. It's certainly spoiled me to the point where I have trouble watching the TV series, and just go with the movies and specials when I want to see some DB anime.

I feel that way too sometimes. Kai is always a good alternative when you want to see the anime go faster. Only downside is that it doesn't cover the entire story.
Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
I haven't really felt that way, but I also haven't tried to watch the entire show again. Even with Kai.
I'd go with the manga advise.

I know exactly what you mean. I too find it too slow, to the extent that I get irritated at moments. Some episodes, though, are more fast-paced so it's OK.

Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
This is what the manga and Kai are for.
I'm not really bothered by the Anime at all. The only things I skip are the filler in between Son Gohan and co leaving Earth and arriving on (the real) Namekusei. I'm a huge filler guy but all of that filler is just unbearable IMHO.

That's pretty much my experience after reading the Dragon Ball manga.JBoogie wrote:Don't get me wrong, it's still one of my two favorite animes ever. But it's just soooooooo slow. I mean, I can still watch the anime, but I find it very, very difficult to enjoy it.

This is also why I'm going to make DVD Box Sets of DBZ Abridged.

Despite that those 360p youtube encodes having yet to fill one DVD.Kendamu wrote: This is also why I'm going to make DVD Box Sets of DBZ Abridged.
I do agree, I recall watching the Vegeta fight -*gasp*- and I'm thinking "There's no way that something that took virtually one manga volume can possibly take this long!" The difference is I don't know if I want to blow the money or space on the manga; I adored Kai for this and was seriously considering collecting it over the DBoxes until its premature ending.

I would hope to get higher quality encodes before I started on the project.

That is going to be difficult.Kendamu wrote:I would hope to get higher quality encodes before I started on the project.
The newer episodes are hosted in their site in a nice, around 100MB, MP4 encode (you can download them from their site with any video download plugin on your browser).
But the old ones are only in FLV with poor quality and I don't think they are going to improve the quality of the older episodes.

I'm sure I'll figure it out. I've gotten raw TFS files before.rereboy wrote:That is going to be difficult.Kendamu wrote:I would hope to get higher quality encodes before I started on the project.

Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
It's nothing big and exciting to go look for. I just mean "the file before it was uploaded and compressed." The encodes on their website are just fine for most purposes. If I were to make DVDs of everything, though, I would prefer to go to the trouble of getting the best sources I could so that it doesn't look like crap on my TV.
For everything else, though, I just took the encodes off YouTube and threw them onto an external hard drive that I play through my PS3 and that was perfectly fine for showing them to a lot of people at once without having them crowd around my laptop. Now I have a laptop with HDMI out so I don't even need to download the files nowadays.
I'd mainly just like DVDs because it's my favorite version of animated Dragonball and I can watch it without getting tired of it the same way I can read the manga without getting tired of it.

Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
Yeah, I agree with you. I said it was interesting simply because I've not seen any raw version of their episodes around.
Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
When I watched the Saiya-jin to Freeza arcs last year I found it really slow and was surprised to find myself bored at times.
However upon re-watching I found myself enjoying it a lot more. I also like most filler but I cut out the filler with Yajirobe after Vegeta and Nappa arrive, the last Lunch filler and anything with Chichi when they are on Namek (and any unnecessary flashbacks).
Now I really enjoy it!

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Re: Is it wierd that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
Come to think of it, the fact that the Dragon Boxes only split episodes into halves might be their one decent flaw, at least for convenience sake.
So what are you doing here, just burning the MP4 files onto the DVD?Kendamu wrote:It's nothing big and exciting to go look for. I just mean "the file before it was uploaded and compressed." Re: Is it weird that I can't watch DBZ anymore?
I'm halfway through DBox 2 and what I tend to do with episodes that I find boring (like Bulma and the Crab...Fake Namek...) is use either the 1.2x or 1.4x speed option. It speeds up both the video and audio just enough where it's not ridiculously fast, but still fast enough to keep it from getting dull (also the unnaturally faster audio can give me a laugh or two at points, so that's a bonus).
On hiatus.
