What's the best way to experience DragonBall?

Post by JBoogie » Mon May 16, 2011 1:19 am

I was watching the Saiyan saga and Gohan made a reference to Goku fighting Piccolo. I kinda felt weird that I never finished DragonBall, but it just seems so boring. However, I plan to go through with it. Should I read the manga or watch the anime?

You really feel it's boring? I thought Dragonball itself was hilarious and rather entertaining. Waayyyy more gag stuff, and some really well written humor if you ask me. I've only ever watched the sub though... I'm sure all that amazing humor is completely lost in the dub.

If anything DBZ is pretty boring compared to Dragonball.

Manga.

The DB portion of the anime is better than the Z portion by leaps and bounds if you want to watch it though. I do assume you are making the boring statement based on the amount of action, because DB is anything but boring. It may balance the action and comedy instead of Z level planet busting, but it is still great.

Are you one of those "DBZ IS A HARDCORE ACTION SHOW AND NOT A SILLY KID SHOW" people? Saying you feel bored watching it makes me think this way.

I'd recommend going with the the manga. In fact, I think it'd be a good idea to read the entire manga from start to finish, including the so called "Z parts".

Sorry. By boring, I meant that I've read through it numerous times over and over yet never finished. I like to restart things from the beginning, so it's my own fault.

In all fairness, the beginning of Dragonball is pretty shit. You could try starting from the 22nd Budokai, as it's pretty action-packed and leads right into the King Piccolo arc.

I haven't watched the entire anime series (am about to) but the manga is just perfect. Well paced, funny, exciting... It's much better than DBZ.

Read/Watch from the beginning, but if you want to watch where it gets serious I'd go with Rocketman's suggestion. Although I disagree with his thoughts on the early half of the series. All of the Dragonball half is good and Toriyama keeps topping his work... I really like the humour of early Dragonball, Kame Sennin's training and 21st Budokai.

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Blasphemy. The beginning of Dragonball was some of the best parts of the whole series IMO.

This is just like saying if you want to start reading Katekyō Hitman Reborn! it should be from volume 8 because that's where the action parts starts and skip the early parts because they were silly gag stories despite it introducing a lot of main characters and the start of the whole series.

You know that expression, "The book was better?"

It is.

Read the manga.

What makes the manga better? Isn't it basically the same just with reading instead of watching?

It was Family Guy with no cutaways and less sophistication. It got better around the 21st Budokai, but the 22nd happens after a time skip, which make convenient breaks to jump in at.

Better and consistent art, much better pacing, no stupid and illogical filler. And its the original work, not an adaptation like the anime is.

I say watch the Anime. The dubbed season boxsets look cool. But before you do I'd watch the movie "Path to power" As it is Dragonball but with enough Z to ease you in to the transition.

Hope that helps :)

No filler and better pacing, I guess.

Find someone in real world which whom you can share your interests. Then read and watch the same time. The availability of both manga and anime again takes something from you, so don't go the simplest way- eg. complete the manga on sales in antiquaries, buy releases anime as cheap as you can. Now even if you don't enjoy the story itself you will get some interesting memories.

Ps. Books are always better. Have you ever tried to kill the mosquito or start the fire with screen?

Start from the beginning. Yamcha and Goku fighting for the first time is a lot more exciting than Vegetto fighting Boo, or any of the other generic flailing-about-in-the-sky fights that plague that later parts of the story.

Yeah, the earlier parts of the series (the first arc and the Red Ribbon arc) are somewhat of a slog to get through, but the manga is actually a very quick and fun read. Once you get to the 22nd Budokai and King Piccolo arcs, you'll be addicted. The Piccolo arcs and onward is when the series reaches it's peak in both story and art quality.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
