Is there anything that's manga exclusive?

Post by RLZIII » Wed Oct 12, 2011 1:00 pm

There's always a lot of talk about what the anime added that's not present in the manga, and rightfully so of course. However, are there any aspects of the manga that never made it into the anime? I'd be curious to know what's missing from the anime.

In the manga, Zarbon told Vegeta about Freeza's ability to transform, and this was oddly omitted from the anime, which makes the later scene where Vegeta tells Freeza that it was Zarbon who told him a bit odd, since it never happened in the anime unless you want to pretend it happens off screen...

I've never checked, but supposedly Wayan Budhiyasa's cameo was omitted from the anime...

Considering the complete rewrite the Great Saiyaman stories had for the anime, you could say a lot of it was either manga exclusive or at least extremely different (by DB standards) in each version. For example, Videl blackmailing Gohan to join the Tenkaichi Budoukai occurred in her plane (while he was in costume) rather than in the school hallway. She found out about his identity in the manga simply because she recognized his voice, while in the anime she finds out because he stupidly blurts out his name (even though in the next episode he uses the manga explanation to tell Bulma!). That also means Great Saiyaman's actual first (and last) case was completely omitted from the anime. But the two criminals he and Videl apprehend actually make a cameo appearance in the "We Gotta Power" opening.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Freeza killing Cargo is manga-only. In the anime that was changed to Dodoria.
Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.
Draws comics that may or may not have been blatantly inspired by Akira Toriyama's manga.

That is correct. The murderer of Cargo is changed from Freeza to Dodoria. I'm not sure if the original poster would consider that an actual scene that's manga exclusive rather than just an alteration, but it's certainly worth throwing out there.

Yep.

There's also the brief bit where Tenshinhan notices that there are cracks in his electric rice cooker, and decided to take on Piccolo alone. In the anime the rice cooker's fine and Tenshinhan uses it, so we don't get that. And the scene where Karin gives Goku the Super God Water isn't really in the anime, since there Goku has to go that ice maze to get it.

I remember hearing that Goku using the "Mad Dog" attack on Jacky Chun wasn't in the anime, apparently because it was too much of a written word-based joke, but I've never actually seen the anime version of that fight.

We got something similar though, didn't we? The FUNi dub translated it as the crazy monkey technique.

They changed the Suiken/"Drunken Fist" to the "Crazy Cow" attack. Beer bottles to milk bottles.

I remember Piccolo hid next to the Turtle House when Raditz was confronting Goku in the manga, but the anime changed it to Piccolo just floating down out of nowhere after Raditz had left.

Also, in the manga, Mr. Satan was shot outside of Boo's house, right after he attacked the two gunmen who shot Bee (the dog). In the anime, he wasn't shot until a short while later, and it was inside Boo's house.

I think Bulmas nipples were manga exclusive but don't quote me on that.

Wait...I could've sworn Goku did that attack in the anime. That was one of the most memorable parts in the fight to me, and I've never even read the manga version.

We *are* talking about his take on Roshi's drunken fist attack where he acts like a monkey, right? That's definitely in the anime, actually.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Goku was underwater and Freeza was waiting for him to pop back up. Goku created 2 spherical Kamehameha's and launched them out of the water after he swam far away enough.

No, not the monkey attack. That was definitely in both versions.

In the manga it goes:
Jackie uses Suiken (Drunken Fist).
Gokuu counters with Kyouken (Mad Dog).
Gokuu claims he used Kyouken (Crazy Fist).
They pause briefly and Jackie tells him he got the kanji in his attack wrong.
Then Gokuu starts using Saruken (Monkey Fist).

But in the anime it goes:
Jackie uses Suiken (Drunken Fist).
Gokuu counters with Saruken (Monkey Fist).

The mad dog attack is pretty distinct, because he runs on all fours and foams at the mouth. Whereas the monkey attack involves hopping around, scratching himself, and making monkey noises.

It's strange that they'd cut that, since they had no problem using on-screen kanji (in thought bubbles, etc) elsewhere. (The announcer asking for "Mago Gosara," etc.) Would've been hell on international dubs though.
