Sabat & Cook answering to idea of USA exclusive Kai Buu saga
"I asked Sabat if they ever thought about finishing DBZ Kai on their own, without Japan's help. He & Justin Cook have talked about it! But unfortunately sales for Kai haven't been great. If anything, it's boosted sales of the orange brick box sets instead."
(quote from Twitter)
Wish Sabat's and Cook's exact words were documented, but it gets the point across. Oh well.

I never did and never will expect FUNimation to fund a Boo-arc Kai, but the idea that Kai is doing so poorly that it actually may have boosted the sales for the orange bricks is just... wow...KingofWisdom wrote:"...unfortunately sales for Kai haven't been great. I wouldn't mind them FUNDING a Kai'd Buu arc, just as long as they stayed the hell away from the actual production.

Why? All they have to do is cut stuff out and resync the audio. Surely they can do that.penguintruth wrote:I wouldn't mind them FUNDING a Kai'd Buu arc, just as long as they stayed the hell away from the actual production.

They can't even give DBZ a proper release, so I'd be pretty nervous about them handling the editing too.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Which is now going out of print. I'd hardly call that a proper release. Maybe proper quality, yes.

I'm assuming Kai sales have went down after fans realized it wouldn't cover the entire DBZ story. But who knows.

This is so depressing and wrong on countless levels. Oh man...KingofWisdom wrote:"But unfortunately sales for Kai haven't been great. If anything, it's boosted sales of the orange brick box sets instead."
My guess is that fans in general reacted poorly to Kai and were inadvertently reminded of how much they loved the old dub of Z (again, I blame the fact that FUNimation never properly advertised the uncut home release of Kai). I know sometimes we forget this as Kanzenshuu, but for all of the talk about how the original Japanese version is the only version that can be enjoyed worldwide, the English dub continues to be the main selling point of DBZ in North America--the majority of FUNimation's DVD-buying customers are primarily dub-watchers according to the surveys they have taken.Gonstead wrote:......what? A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I think you're giving people too much credit.
See version of show on TV --> go to Target / Walmart / etc. --> see version of show in $15 box set --> purchase

FUNimation's doing its own Majin Boo Kai arc? Please God no.
Just stick to what they're given from Japan.

Agreed. I'd want a Majin Boo Kai, but not from Funi. I'm not a dub guy.dbboxkaifan wrote:FUNimation's doing its own Majin Boo Kai arc? Please God no.

I'd assume they'd be able to sync the Japanese audio up, too. Also I don't see what discontinuing a DVD release that was either in their contract that said they had to discontinue it or had low sales has to do with editing.OzzyApu wrote:Agreed. This is disappointing to see many fans miss out on a great release and have to watch a less than stellar product.
But, sales are sales. I understand that completely.

Re: Sabat & Cook answering to idea of USA exclusive Kai Buu
To do that, they would need to have a new Japanese track produced, just to have the isolated vocals. If they were to just use the old Z audio, they'd have no control over the placement of the music or sound effects, and depending on how the show is edited, they could be a complete mess.Pokewhiz7 wrote:I'd assume they'd be able to sync the Japanese audio up, too.
There's a very good reason why the Japanese track in Z has only ever been released in mono, you know.

Re: Sabat & Cook answering to idea of USA exclusive Kai Buu
My problem with FUNimation trying to do a Majin Boo arc as in manga-2-anime version it could possibly be choppy, badly done and not professional.
But if they knew exactly what they were doing, I'd like to see it, or... DBZ Levels BDs for Boo's Z arc.

Re: Sabat & Cook answering to idea of USA exclusive Kai Buu
I think Funimation could do this properly. They edited those episodes of GT on the first run, and on the green bricks they managed to edit Gokus animation in the 4th credit ending just to put English credits. If they followed the manga or had notes from Toei on what to cut and what not to they would be okay. Funimation knows how to edit from what I have seen. I also wish they would so we could have a Buu arc. It would be nice to see the Gohan school episodes cut up like the manga originally was, and it would be great to have Buu properly dubbed.
Or what they could do I just re-dub the entire Buu saga.
