I thought that "Muten Roushi" was just another, more imposing title for him, alongside "Kame-sennin". His true name is never revealed in the series. Or did the Daizenshuu make a mistake or basically take it as his "true" name, because I think somewhere, in the manga or another guidebook, that or "Muten Roushi" or something is on his driving licence? Or did Kanzenshuu (well, this was before the merge, but whatever) translate it strangely, perhaps phrased in a way that couldn't completely translate across to English?Daizenshuu 2 wrote:Muten Roshi is Kame-sennin's true name. Muten Roushi is Kame-sennin's true name?
In Kame-sennin's part of the Growing Up section of Daizenshuu 2, it says this about him.

It does say "武天老師は、亀仙人の本当の名前。"
I'd write it off as "the Daizenshuu made a mistake", though. It doesn't really make much sense.

His driver's license does say 武天老師 though. What does sense really have to do with anything anyway? It's Dragon Ball. We have people named after a multitude of things, I don't think its that much of a stretch.

Re: Muten Roushi is Kame-sennin's true name?
I don't think it's all that unlikely that Muten Rōshi could be Kame-Sen'nin's real name, although both Kame-Sen'nin ("Turtle Sage") and Muten Rōshi ("Invincible Old Master") can both be thought of as mere titles. However, the latter can be an actual name in Japan, albeit a very pompous one, whereas a "Sen'nin" is always just considered a title. Like in many cultures, Japanese names can have actual meanings, such as an item, or a place, or even a title once held by a distant family member. So I don't think you can say the Daizenshuu was necessarily wrong in this case, especially not on the premise of "It doesn't really make much sense". But all that said, his actual birth name is never outright stated, so we really have no idea. And on top of that, Toriyama did say in the Dragon Ball Forever guidebook that Muten Roshi was just supposed to be a suitably impressive name.
Also, as TheDevilsCorpse said, his driver's license does say Muten Rōshi (武天老師) on it, although this is only in the anime. We never actually see his driver's license in the manga, just that he shows it to Chi-Chi.

Yeah, you're right. It is plausible (at least in DB, although I digress; some parents, especially celebrities, in real-life name their children eccentric names) that Muten Roushi is Kame-sennin's name. I think Herms said something like this before, but perhaps his parents were quirky and/or had foresight. But I guess, when you have people named after foods, what's strange? Gokuu laughed at Blooma's name, but his own grandfather shares his name with a type of rice, and his Saiyan name is a pun on carrot.Hujio wrote:I don't think it's all that unlikely that Muten Rōshi could be Kame-Sen'nin's real name, although both Kame-Sen'nin ("Turtle Sage") and Muten Rōshi ("Invincible Old Master") can both be thought of as mere titles. They certainly must've been pretty damn old, considering the respective age gaps of Muten Roushi and Uranai Baba, both of whom really old and mystical beings themselves (the former a legendary martial arts master who can read minds and hypnotize people; the latter a fortune-teller who escorts people between the living world and the afterlife).

No, his real name is Jackie Chun. Just kidding!
