"DBZ has no story." HOW?

Post by matt0044 » Sat May 19, 2012 12:31 pm

This is a phrase that irks me to no end. Dragon Ball Z DOES have a story. There are characters with personality who develop over the series and one event happen and leads into another smoothly. Sure, it's action oriented but it's not mindless.

Where'd this idea come from anyways?

Good guy beats bad guy, the battle repeats next time.

The story is about the villains? Eh?

Be more clear are you saying you don't think it has a story
Well I think it has a story (It's not just alien's punching each other for 291 episodes)
I guess the idea that it has a story is there because it has a story.

I don't know if this is a joke

If you don't think it has a story the what the hell are you doing here.

should be in universe

It lacks those deep emotional back stories that other shonen series like One Piece have. But I agree, I always thought that the way the characters interact with each other in certain situations showed us who they were, thus developing their personalities and making us care for each of them in a different way. It definitely lacks that deep immersing plot that other series have, but what is there as far as story goes, is definitely enough for me. The Dragon Ball world is incredibly interesting.

It has story, it's a simple story of Good vs. Evil but what truly matters is how it's plotted out, like how they handle the pacing, style, guidelines etc., I'd say in that regards, it had a pretty decent story.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

It obviously has a story, and anyone that says otherwise clearly hasn't read or watched the series.

If you want to debate the merits of the story, then we can. There have been loads of threads on that matter already.

I've been watching the series for several years now, and now with Kai, well I'm done with Z but waiting for Part 8 to finish Kai.

For me, DBZ's story just isn't a real story compared to others, but it's definitely entertaining.

Dragon Ball Z's story I assume is more about the characters than the series itself otherwise there's no story but only fighting.

It comes from the regular Joe that only knows about Dragon Ball Z and complains about characters having no backstory to them.

People who clam DBZ has no story are usually people who have only seen a random episode or two at most.

You know, you've been going on this whole "DBZ has no story" tirade for quite awhile. So I have to ask: what exactly constitutes as a narrative to you? Because honestly, I don't understand how anyone can look at the saiyan-freeza story arcs, and try to tell me it doesn't have a story.

It bothers me that there's a disturbing amount of individuals who truly believe that a "good tale" needs to be overly complex (or DEEP, I suppose) in order to be of quality.
For me, DBZ's story just isn't as good compared to others, but it's definitely entertaining.
Fixed. I know you think otherwise, but this is what you mean. You don't like DBZ's story? Fine. But trying to argue it doesn't have one is downright idiotic.

Dragon Ball doesn't have an overarching story, but there's obvious plot for each arc. It's sort of like the biographical nature of the Rocky film series in how it follow one character's life and most of the events of it.

Anyone who says DB does not have a story has either:

A) Never looked up the word before

B) Not seen or read the series for a significant amount
or
C) Is actively trying to provoke a response from fans

I am not. I just don't look at the DBZ story so great as everyone else here.

What is the C supposed to mean?
