What does Dragonball mean to you?
Hello Everyone!
What does Dragonball mean to you? has it taught you anything?
Dragonball to me is just magical, that's really the only word I could use to describe it. in my opinion Dragonball isn't just a kids show. it's part of my childhood. as lame as this may sound.
I never really had a father figure in my life. and growing up seeing Goku and everyone teaching right from wrong and to always stand up no matter how rough life can be just makes me happy. and I always looked up to the characters.
the way the characters interact with each other almost makes you think for a second that these are real people, and this is a real world. I don't think I'll ever stop watching Dragonball. How do you guys feel?

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I pretty much feel the same way.
I've recently rewatched Kai and read the manga through VizBig Volume 7 (I am in the process of collecting it) and I have to say I am pretty darn amazed at how the whole thing has such a firm grip on me. I mean, I'm 24 and have a job and I've seen Dragon Ball in its entirety dozens of times, and yet recently when watching Kai and even just reading the manga I'd get emotional about the development of the plot and the characters' relationships.
Yes, it truly is magical and it will always have a special place in my heart, as cheesy and sassy as this may sound.

Re: What does Dragonball mean to you?
What Goku & co. learned to me is to never give up. I'm trying to follow this in my life as much as I can.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Yeah? he thinks it's wrong for people to try and hurt others. so i mean in a sense he is teaching the kids at home, to be good and don't cause others pain and suffering and to stick up for your friends. at-least that's what I took from watching the series.Cipher wrote:Goku teaches everybody right from wrong?

What is wrong with you? Why are you taking everything I say and hosting an image to it? Yeah sure Goku fights with vegeta and they beat each other all to hell. but was it Goku's fault Vegeta's selfish pride wanted to fight him?

penguintruth, you're on thin ice as it is. An image by itself is not an appropriate response.

The writing of Dragon Ball has taught me that one shouldn't sweat too much. Relax, don't overwork yourself unless you're in the zone or else you'll have writing.
Not very in-universe.

Re: What does Dragonball mean to you?
Don't worry; I was kidding you, but only kind of. On the surface (and beneath it), he's a total happy-go-lucky character who wants to stand up to bad guys and believes in the good in people.samuraix123 wrote:Yeah? he thinks it's wrong for people to try and hurt others. so i mean in a sense he is teaching the kids at home, to be good and don't cause others pain and suffering and to stick up for your friends. at-least that's what I took from watching the series.
It's just that his other major character trait is regularly prioritizing his love of fighting over the safety or convenience of his friends or family. Doing things like letting dangerous villains go just so he can have a rematch, volunteering to not stop the androids before they arrive, electing to remain in the afterlife so he could fight old experts when they had a way for him to return to life, etc.
It's not even reading (or viewing) against the grain. It's what makes the main characters' interactions with actual concerned citizens like Trunks or Kaioshin amusing.
So, yeah, he's a pure-hearted do-gooder. It's just that he's as amoral as pure-hearted do-gooders come.

Typical. Even if I try to play nice I get in trouble.VegettoEX wrote:penguintruth, you're on thin ice as it is. An image by itself is not an appropriate response.
My (incredibly obvious) point was that DB/Z is not a good show to get moral lessons from. The main character and his allies regularly put innocent people at risk for capricious reasons, usually to feed their own destructive passions. Any morality to be gleaned from it usually comes from the terribly inaccurate English dub which couldn't stop spouting its tired moral platitudes for five minutes.
It's a show about a guy who enjoys beating people to a pulp. That's his greatest joy in life.

The wonderful music produced by Shunsuke Kikuchi and the others too.
I enjoyed the show as a kid but after watching so many times during the years, it's gotten repetitive and there's simply better series out there than Dragon Ball (DB/Z/GT). DB fans can disagree it's not a prob. =P

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

I know this is your gimmick, but that just isn't true, and you know it. The characters are definitely more amoral than others of their archetype, but not to the extent you're saying.penguintruth wrote:Any morality to be gleaned from it usually comes from the terribly inaccurate English dub which couldn't stop spouting its tired moral platitudes for five minutes.

Umm... About that..DHM211 wrote: Yamcha taught me even if I lose at everything in life I'll still have a girlfriend.
Anyway, Dragon Ball, to me, shows me how much an author can take influences around him and consistently evolve his story, without feeling jarring and forced.

Also penguintruth I don't hold nothing against you it was just odd looking at pictures and not seeing an explanation behind them. but I'm glad to hear what everyone thinks about the franchise and can't wait to read more from other folks

Keep those close to you as close as possible.
You can find the good in some of the most malicious people.
No matter hoe grim a situation gets, keep on your A game.
Oh, and you can eat as much as you want as long as you work out....
