Thoughts on Yajirobe?
I mean that guy is always eating. He makes me laugh so much. He can out-eat goku. I mean we are talking about a guy who ate a shitload of senzu beans at once. Some people say he is useless, but I think he was great to the series. Come on, Mr. Satan is away worse.
His shinning moments include:
- Killing Cymbal.
- Helping Goku out during the Piccolo Daimao saga.
- Cutting Vegeta's tail.
I like him more than Chaozu to be honest, just because he makes me laugh (not to say I don't like Chaozu).
So yeah. What are your thoughts on him?

oh the love_that_goku jokes I'm tempted to make here...
I like to imagine that Yajirobe would have made a great cowardly Saiyan. Sure eats like one. Hm, I wonder if there's a fanfiction for that.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Guy climbed up Karin's Tower with Goku on his back. He had juice, man. I wish he learned to use ki attacks.

He was pretty awesome.
He only had a few moments to shine, but they were pretty cool moments.
And apparently the Androids saw fit to kill him in the future. He might have done...something to warrant that.

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
Yajirobe is a crude, gluttonous, self-centered vagabond (he's a bad man) but I like him. He gets a pass for being awesome.
We may not know but he's the most powerful of the Z-Senshi. Why? He actually has the balls to hit Chi-Chi (which no one but Super Boo had). No really, Yajirobe straight up asked Goku "Can I punch this broad in the face?"

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.
Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
He's a really great character, he's powerful and he's funny, but the best thing about him is that he's selfish and cowardly, but will still force himself to face his fear of death/harm to himself when it really, really matters, like in the joint effort against Vegeta. I wish he'd maintained a more prominent role, much like many of the characters, but at least he did better than Yamcha.

@Super 17 I agree, plus Chaozu is just plain boring so no one really cares.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

I LOVE, love, love Mayumi Tanaka's voice for him. So funny at times.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
I like the guy. I wouldn't say he's anywhere near a favorite character or anything, but he's pretty fun. Especially in his introduction, and in a way he got a bigger shining moment in the Saiyan material than any of the other human characters did.
Most of all, though that's kind of outside the point - I love playing as him in Tenkaichi 3. There's something therapeutic about running around as a fat samurai and kicking butt. So, so fun.

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
I think he was created to show how Goku would have become if he hadn't meet Bulma (or to replace Kuririn since they have the same voice actress).
He looks very similar to a Saiyan, and he wanted to joind Vegeta after the latter survived the injury Yajirobe made on his back. What if he had become an ally of Vegeta and helped him defeat Freeza and his men on Namek.
There are a lot af mysteries about his past, how did became a samurai, who was his sensei, why was he alone in the woods when he met Goku, why was he so strong (being able to rival the students of Roshi, a martial arts legend in the Dragon World) when introduced in the series and during the Saiyan arc (defeating Kuririn in filler while eating/not fighting seriously), etc. Later in the series, he appearantly became a disciple of Karin (also, in Dragon Ball Online, it is now him who grows the Senzu Beams).

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
I'm not sure I'd really say he 'wanted' to join Vegeta. It was kind of a last ditch bid for survival on his part, out of fear, rather than him thinking 'Oh crap, this guy's awesome, I should totally hang out with him and hope it goes better for me than it did for his last partner'.JeffJarrett wrote:He looks very similar to a Saiyan, and he wanted to joind Vegeta after the latter survived the injury Yajirobe made on his back. That said, I'd pay good money to have seen that happen. I can only imagine the crap he'd have made Yajirobe do for him while on Namek.

I always liked that Vegeta What If? In Budokai 1, where Vegeta made an offer for Yajirobe to join him.Gyt Kaliba wrote:I'm not sure I'd really say he 'wanted' to join Vegeta. Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
Ah, also the character Yangus in Dragon Quest VIII is very simialr to Yajirobe (and Yamcha, maybe a fusion of the two). I liked thinking he was Yajirobe while I was playing the game.

Here Yangus bears a slight resemblance to Dodoria, but I've never seen him that pink in the game:

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
Yajirobe is an awesome character. He's not really good, but he's not really bad. He's just selfish and does whatever is more convenient to him.
I was laughing hard at the part where he drove to Piccolo Daimao's and Goku's fighting place, but then turned back because it was none of his business. Then turned back again because Goku owed him food, then back again because he realized Goku could just give him the food later if he survives. And he kept doing that for a few times.
Wish he had more screen time though.

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
Yajirobe is pretty cool I guess. His comic relief as well as his pwning of Cymbal were pretty cool.
Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. One does not predict or calculate power like ours."

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
Yajirobe is awesome. This read made me immediately go to BT3 and use him to beat up Piccolo Daimao.
I think it's good that he didn't become a main fighter like the others. It makes him different, being as powerful as he is but not giving a hoot about working with the others.

I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
I think he's a great example of how Toriyama wrote by the seat of his pants. He's introduced with similar fanfare as the other humans, and it's not outlandish to think, when reading the story as it unfolds, that he could be around for the long haul, but he's pretty much forgotten when Toriyama decided to introduce aliens.

Re: Thoughts on Yajirobe?
When I first saw Yajirobe I was left speechless. At the time (1995-1996, before I knew anything about DBZ), I really thought he could be a lost relative of Goku. He was way too strong without a proper training (that we knew of) and had this huge appetite (maybe even greater than Goku). He managed to climb Karin's tower with Goku on his back!
I always liked his character and how he was portrayed, it was too funny. He could do stuff, but he simply choose not too. I always thought it was hilarious he never learned to fly. I expected that Kami/Popo would have taught him while they were training at the look out.
And he did directly saved them all more than once. He took Goku to Karin for healing, caught him midair from his last punch with Piccolo Daimao, gave him the sensu when Goku was with a hole in his chest at the 23rd budokai and then, maybe the most important of all, he cut Vegeta's tail. And last, but not least, "Can I punch this broad in the face?".
He has done enough in my book.
