Summer Vacation Special

Post by kidglov3s » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:50 am

I was looking for an askamod thread or something to see if this is appropriate to post. I couldn't find one so I thought I'd take the chance on it.

Searching youtube for "Vhs, long" by upload date last night, like ya do, I happened upon the summer vacation special, uploaded in the past day or two.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLoiGADW4es

As far as I know this has been very difficult to come by so I thought it would be something of a community service to mention it. It's pretty cool.

What are the other stuff the titles talks about?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Kind of a random assortment of big moments from the latter 2/3 of DBZ, with the quality varying but generally poor. It definitely brings back memories of fansubs that were at best borderline unwatchable.

Someone uploaded the full version of this special on YouTube. I thought that I should point this out because until now we have only some clips and not the whole special. So in case someone wants to check it out, here is the link:

Not including the English subs that exist for this is rather a bad idea because this is specifically for the English/International fanbase to watch if they want and having subtitles would've been helpful.

But I digress, this special is a compilation of scenes from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Which is why I've not bothered to watch it fully but jump around it.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

That is definitely my rip and I gave it to a limited number of people who asked me for the special on PM on the promise of not giving it to anyone else, but now it's somehow openly available. Sigh.

It was not for the sake of my possessive feeling. I borrowed the recording from an old Japanese fan and I digitized it for him, so I didn't want it to be openly available this way without his permission.

It wasn't me, Kei. I'm holding on very tightly to all of the things you gave me. But in all fairness, you cannot give something to someone you don't know and expect 100% truthfulness.

It was probably someone who brags about having 1TB-4TB of digital Dragon Ball content but alas, he's not worth mentioning here.

The only thing that I'm interested which is still unreleased to this day is are all of Dragon Ball BGMs (inc. Z & GT) with lossless CD quality.. please Columbia Japan.

I did subtitle for someone who gave me Kei's copy (later finding out that they promised Kei not to share it). However, I have taken those subtitles and applied (re-timed) them to another copy of the special that I have from a VHS source. Subtitles are not complete though so it really doesn't matter

But if it's the person who I think it is, they shouldn't have Kei's copy since I never shared it. The copy they have came from a lower quality VHS source and is missing commercials and such and I think a little of the ending?

It does. I think it stinks that Kei asked not for others to share it but they did it anyway. That's not right. If the other copy was released (1st post) I don't think it would be too bad since it was already up before being taken down for whatever reason.

I agree that it never should have been shared if Kei didn't want it to be shared, BUT the notion that the material itself needs to stay rare is beyond silly to me. It's not a map to El Dorado or the coordinates to Atlantis. It's Dragon Ball animation. The series, outside of making money, was created for everyone to enjoy. It'd be a different story if it were a rare action figure you got MIB and don't want to open, but it's old and obscure animation that's already been ripped to a digital file. Hording old material like that which can't really be bought just for the sake of buffing up your collection doesn't exactly seem like honoring the shonen spirit for which the series is known.

Of course I'm not talking about pirating material which was readily available for purchase, but it's such a shame that everyone can't just enjoy the franchise's "lost" material without jumping to that adult "MINE, must protect" mind set.

At the end of the day, though, keeping something like this "within the community" is virtually impossible. Whatever reason it may be, someone will eventually upload it.
