Saddest death scenes in the series?

Post by DonZ » Sun May 05, 2013 3:00 pm

There's many and many death scenes in the DragonBall series, so i thought i should make this thread : D
for me it goes like ..

1- Vegeta's first death on Namek. now that's what i call EPIC! this scene has so much emotions, Vegeta's speech, his tears, he's begging for his Enemy just because they share the same bloodline!! this is definitely the best death scene, and one of the best scenes in general.
2- Vegeta's second death in Majin Boo Arc. i didn't see that one coming .. it was really amazing to see Vegeta real sacrifice for his family <3
3- Piccolo's death in Saiyan Arc. nuff said :( *tears*
4- Goku's first death in Saiyan Arc, it was shocking, i didn't really expect Goku to die at that point of the series.

so, what's your list ?

Ah yes, Mr. Robot. That one's pretty traumatic - though by the same token, it makes the dinosaur's death the episode after pretty much ineffective since Gohan learns basically the same episode twice in a row. Never did understand why they did both of those filler stories when one would have sufficed...

For me though, I'd say the one that probably gets to me the worst is Kuririn's first death in Dragon Ball. It just comes out of nowhere in an otherwise pretty happy scene, it's just...wow. Pretty much every other time things go bad in the franchise, you can see the build-up as things get worse in a progression. With this one though, it completely blindsides you. It always gets to me.

I actually find it funny how, between losing his dad, being kidnapped by Piccolo, his experiences with the robot, dinosaur and orphans, and then watching everyone die fighting the Saiyans, those episodes are just a stream of continuous shit for Gohan, I think unintentionally so.

Agreed on Kuririn, although it's more like vaguely shocking than really emotional.

Kuririn's first death was sad too, it's the most "i didn't see that one coming" death in the whole series!
but i knew something were up when Goku start staring at Kuririn while he's going to get him his Nyoibou. it was .. weird. you know something bad gonna happen.

Wow, did I really write 'Gohan learns the same episode twice in a row'? Gah. That should be same lesson. I blame lunch. But yeah, it could be why a lot of people actually start to really like Gohan in that arc even though it's only later that I start to like him more. He does have to go through a hell of a lot.

1 - Future Gohan. Why? Because theres no Dragon balls. He really died. Future Gohan is the strongest character when it comes to personality. His lovable father died by heart diease because there wasnt still a cure for the virus. His friends were killed, one by one, by the androids, making him feel powerless against them and without dragon balls to revive them. Even with one arm he fought until the end, like a saiyan, against the murders of his "family" knowing perfectly he couldnt win but having the goal to show trunks the path to hope. Goku never experienced that feeling truly because there were always the dragon balls in his timeline in the end. No matter how may times some people died, they always got revived.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Piccolo saving Gohan from Nappa. I say this all the time, but it is the culmination of Piccolo's transformaition from Goku's archenemy to his son's mentor/father figure.

Probably Kuririn's first death but one that no one else will likely choose is that old married couple that is killed by that douche bag sniper during the Buu arc. It's so sad when you see him try and reach his wife but can't before he dies.

I agree that the old married couple being shot in cold blood is really quite awful to watch, but the saddest one for me is possibly Kame Sen'nin. He's sort of like the Dumbledore of Dragon Ball to me, and his death is like the Dumbledore's death of Dragon Ball. When he's been such a likeable character all along, sometimes providing comic relief and sometimes being the wise father figure, but always extremely powerful, there's something really emotive about seeing him act so completely seriously and heroically, against a force that dwarfs him, and it's unpleasant to then see him weak and helpless as he dies. It's because he's been so "untouchable" and just amazing all along that him dying makes the situation feel much more hopeless than it already did.

Yeah, that one really pisses me off.

Piccolo's death in GT is pretty sad as he's pretty much left behind. His words to Gohan didn't help either. If that scene was given a little more development before hand, I'd say it be one of the saddest in the series.

There are good death scenes, but not many truly sad death scenes, as death is undercut by the Dragon Balls themselves. I mean, as soon as Bora is brought back to life, that's pretty much it for death in the DB world. Sure, the Dragon Balls still have rules wherein a person might be unable to come back to life, but those rules always seem to have loopholes. I think death probably meant more when the quest for the Dragon Balls took some actual time. I mean, when you can gather the Dragon Balls in a couple of days with minimal effort because you're uber powerful, your best friend's death at the hands of some alien douchebag is just a temporary situation, like being benched in a sports game.

That said, I thought Goku's death in the Cell arc was pretty sad. Sure, he could have come back, but he chose not to. "Uh yeah, I tend to be a magnet for trouble. Probably best I stay dead." This is completely stepped over for the Buu arc, however.

Think, however, about all the people on the DB world that died because they weren't deemed important enough to bring back to life. That's pretty sad, but since we don't know them, not nearly enough. It's like DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Billions of people not only died, but ceased to have ever existed to begin with. And yet, most of them we don't care about. The Flash died and it was a big deal, because he's The Flash, not Billy MacEntire of Flintfuck, Michigan, who just kissed a girl for the first time an hour before his universe was pulverized. I hate to say, Stalin had a point. "One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic."

The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Come to think of it, were the people of East City ever revived? Or the guy in the truck who got Big Bang Attack'd by Veggie? Or that dead family in the Boo arc? Or that elderly couple who were shot in the Boo arc?

Kuririn's first death just came out of nowhere. Toriyama's best plot-twist IMO.

Piccolo's death against Nappa.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I thought chiaotzu's death when fighting Nappa was pretty sad. Just because he is such an innocent character.

Not to mention how in vain it ultimately was. It's both sad and humiliating for him. :(

I say this too. What made it stand out was that Piccolo chose to die for the benefit of the universe. He really didn't need to. His farewell to Gohan was also touching. The only thing that stops it from truly being a tear jerker are the fact that Piccolo is barely in GT, and he wasn't built up enough for the death.

@penguintruth Dragon Balls or no Dragon Balls, death is still a traumatic experience for those who experience it.

Well, the one's who keep their bodies don't seem to mind it all that much. It didn't really bother Goku, or any of the others who went to Kaio's.
