Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
Or is it pretty much exactly the same but without all the filler and 10 minute powering up scenes, and updated graphics? I've researched the differences already, I'd just like to know your guys' opinion if it's worth watching if I've already recently watched all of DBZ? Thanks

Watch it for the much more accurate script and highly improved english dub.deadguy366 wrote:Or is it pretty much exactly the same but without all the filler and 10 minute powering up scenes, and updated graphics? I'd say it's worth it but maybe not straight away.
Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
I'll second this answer. If nothing else, watch Kai for the never-before-seen experience of a faithful and high-standards English dub of DBZ.KentalSSJ6 wrote:Watch it for the much more accurate script and highly improved English dub.

Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
If you just want to avoid filler, stick with Dragonball Z and just skip the episodes you know to be totally outside out of Manga plot-line.
Kai's changes of pace really run hot and cold. For example, Goku's fight with Freeza is still drawn out, albeit at a less excruciating extent, but is still tedious as an end product nonetheless. On the other side of the coin, the whistle-stop pacing through the Android and Cell arc can be occasionally disorientating and dizzying, which at some points verges on the lurid side of things.
I think Kai's increased pacing only really hits the mark during the Saiyan arc and the early throes on Namek. Sometimes Z's more elongated nature actually befits the source material quite well. Filler and pacing are two incredibly contentious issues for Manga readers when it comes to Anime adaptations, but I think sometimes people mistakenly think that panels on a page instantly owe themselves to an animated medium. There's actually quite a bit of creativity and ingenuity required to gulf the transition.

It's the same source material, just cleaned up and re-mastered - with some new 'traced frames'. Personally, I feel that the traced frames are largely of a poor quality and stick out like a sore thumb. Furthermore, I feel that the removal and replacement of damaged frames has suffered from a poor, perhaps even ad-hoc, selection process.deadguy366 wrote:and updated graphics?

Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
It is rather tough to get back to watching every episode of Remastered Dragon Ball Z. I love the music composed by Bruce Faulconer, but since I have it all on my pc, I can just listen to it..
Kai is more worth it for me. That show gets straight to the point, doesn't show unnecessary filler, and thank god it left out that Garlic Jr. saga. That was a waste of time. And fights are more bearable to watch (i.e. base Goku vs. Frieza, STARING CONTEST!!!) They take out all the staring from the fights.

Absolutely. If only for the sake of a dub that doesn't suck.
It's also pretty good in Japanese as a way to quickly bash through the series in a fortnight.

Kai is just an edited Dragon Ball Z. But it does have a better american dub.deadguy366 wrote:Or is it pretty much exactly the same but without all the filler and 10 minute powering up scenes, and updated graphics? and it does not cut back to showing Bulma screaming at the top of her lungs and being grossed out by frogs every 5 minutes during the Frieza fight!!
That was painful to go through.

I agree. Even watching it as a kid I wanted them to leave her to die on Namek.Eternal Super Saiyan wrote:and it does not cut back to showing Bulma screaming at the top of her lungs and being grossed out by frogs every 5 minutes during the Freeza fight!!![]()

It's worth it only if you're interested in seeing the manga in animation form because you disliked/hated the anime for it's pacing.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

if you watch kai you will never be able to sit through Z again

Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
I've heard a lot of people say this and thankfully it has never happened to me. It is true that I do find myself watching Kai more often than the original, but when I do feel like watching some classic Z, I've never had a problem getting through it. There is just something about the original that keeps me coming back to it, even with the pacing issues.sintzu wrote:if you watch kai you will never be able to sit through Z again
As for the question, if you are talking the Japanese version then I would say it is worth watching both. If you are only watching the dub, then I would say just watch Kai.

The Japanese version of Kai is not good because many of the actors sound aged but in the original DBZ the Japanese actors sound great.Freeza Soldier #156 wrote:I've heard a lot of people say this and thankfully it has never happened to me. I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say that it doesn't sound good. True, the actors have aged and some of the performances are not as fresh as they were back in the day, but the acting and voices are still very good in my opinion.JEFFMAN219 wrote:The Japanese version of Kai is not good because many of the actors sound aged but in the original DBZ the Japanese actors sound great.

Ya I guess you're right but I personally felt that the dub cast in Kai did a better job then their Japanese counterparts.Freeza Soldier #156 wrote:I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say that it doesn't sound good. Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
If a dubbed viewing experience is what you'll have, I can't recommend Kai enough. It's my preferred dub viewing experience for the franchise now (and thank God for it, it's so good).
Sub? Dunno about Sub Kai (Kai, S-Cry-Ed, and Yu Yu Hakusho are three rare instances where I can't bring myself to switch to the sub among series I've owned...might add Cowboy Bebop to that if I ever finally buy a home release), but it might be worth a unique experience.

I don't know if that's the case, but I can speak highly of the dub. Not perfect, but very good. A worthy dub for the franchise all things considered (just needed a few more dub term fixes and one or two voice changes, at least in dub terms *Kai, I'd have liked to have been animated from scratch personally, like FMA: Brotherhood*).JEFFMAN219 wrote:Ya I guess you're right but I personally felt that the dub cast in Kai did a better job then their Japanese counterparts.Freeza Soldier #156 wrote:I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say that it doesn't sound good. Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
It is if you encounter a bad line in Z and want to see what the character was supposed to say in Kai. If you really want the alledged "Accurate" version then you can compare what you here with Kai. If you understand DBZ canon enough (from the official manga) and are mature enough not to use the old dub as your source for citation in character debates then no need to see Kai.
Though I like to at least watch Kai with Bruce Faulconer score over Yamamoto's when it pops up on youtube from time to time. Like the best of both worlds feeling for me.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Well, yeah for the new cinematic music, pace and Japanese clean audio it is, regardless that they underperformed in Kai and their best performances are through DB/DBZ/DBGT/Films.
I really enjoyed the adventure through the Saiyan arc to Freeza's arc, that was pretty awesome.

Re: Is it worth is to watch Kai after DBZ?
I don't know if you should watch right away, but yes, it is really worth it. The dub vastly improves and you get better music (for me atleast). It also follows the manga much closer with removing filler and not dragging fights for long and long. It is also a breeze to watch and is so much faster. I think if you try hard enough to watch 4 episodes per day, you can watch DBZ Kai in a month, including the Buu saga and you will love it. The only fault is that you may not enjoy the new animation and miss the American score.
