English Subforum?

Post by LordCrumb » Fri Jan 02, 2015 7:01 pm

Can we please get an English Language subforum? I think it would be beneficial for both sides of the fan base. It could keep the English dub chatter to a minimum in the rest of the forum, and could keep us Funimation fans happy at the same time?

I'd love to discuss the DVD releases, dubs, music and everything Funimation with other Funi fans and supporters. Please please take this into consideration.

I like this forum and wish to be a more contributing member but it's hard when I prefer the English language version.

So would this be an all-around English subforum to discuss the many different English versions of the series, or just a place devoted to the Funi dub? Like if I wanted to discuss the Viz manga or the Ocean Kai dub or Big Green or what have you, would that fit in with what you have in mind? And would people who aren't fans of the Funi dub still be allowed to post their thoughts there, or would it only be exclusively for Funi fans (and/or fans of other English versions)? Also, what if someone's a big fan of the Funi dub of Kai, but can't stand their old Z dub? Can they say negative things about the Funi Z dub, or would it only be a forum for saying positive things about the various English versions?

Wow. Ok, nice. I guess you're against it lol

* English all round would be fine, but a dedicated Funimation Subforum would be awesome.

*** Does it have to be negative? can't they put some actual thought into it rather than "it sucks"?

I'd totally support this idea. It would be cool if there was a dub forum and an "original Japanese version" forum. The dub forum could have FUNi and Ocean subsections as well as a subsection for more obscure dubs (eg bad dubs like the Big Green & Speedy dubs and foreign language dubs as well). That way there would be a lot less arguing/trolling amongst FUNi fanboys/Ocean fanboys/Japanese version fanboys/etc.

No, I think his point was more - is this going to be a circlejerk forum or can legitimate discussion happen about the dub? Is this going to create an unnecessary divide where Japanese fans sit in one place and English fans sit in another? If we can't talk openly in there, should you be allowed to criticise the original in our place?

I don't really see the point. This is a Japanese focused site but it's not like dub-related discussions are frowned upon so why create a divide? There's been many dub threads that have gone just fine.

Because then there would be less overly heated arguments over dubs (arguments that resemble the over the top dub arguments on Youtube with Ocean & FUNi fanboys) and that means less trolling/flaming.

Are there really overly hated arguments? From my time here, it mostly boils down to 'yeah, the dub is objectively inaccurate and unfaithful to the original but if you're aware of that and still enjoy it, that's fine too'. Even "I appreciate the original is the original but I don't find enjoyment in it" is something that goes by with little argument too.

The issues arise when someone can't separate themselves from the topic. "You like X thing that I don't like so here's reasons why you can't like it". Shit like that is very quickly squashed by the staff on the site. We're all guilty of it and all my examples of it were promptly shut down.

Basically, there's no real need for a subforum because, if you're able to have a mature discussion (and, as Mike likes to say, "be an awesome person"), then everything you want to talk about should be able to be brought up without issue.

If you feel that that's something that doesn't happen enough then that needs to be brought up with the moderation team.

At the end of the day, this is a Japanese-focused site and there will always be a critical eye on anything that adapts it. If you want a site where your preferences are the majority then there are many other sites that offer that too.

Honestly wasn't aware there was heated arguments. It's mostly chill with everyone respecting opinions.....Never seen a heated debate here unless it's about Broly. I see no need in an English subfourm. Just discuss Dragonball :) . You know how many Korean Dub based topics I've started? No big deal happened there.

Every other thread is about the FUNi dub. You can count the number of people who pop into those threads, say "this sucks," and leaves on one hand. There is no "great divide" of fans.

And if we're really entertaining this, what is honestly, truly there to discuss about the dub? Power level discussions tend to lean on the original version or the manga for super-accuracy. Acting performances are discussed constantly, albeit not always in a flattering way. I've never seen anyone try to discuss Dragon Ball lore while limiting themselves exclusively to the dub. It usually leads to "well what does the Japanese/manga version say on this subject?"

How about "International dubs"? There's many, many more fans of dubs around the world than the english dubs!

If the goal is to avoid "heated arguments" (which I don't really see, unless you're counting any kind of constructive criticism whatsoever), I think it would be far more productive to just leave things the way they are. Encouraging people to coexist and talk like adults would accomplish more than simply saying, "Okay, you fans go over here, and you fans go over here."

This is supposed to be an online community. Why segregate it?

What heated debates? As a Funi fan myself, I haven't seen anything on this forum that makes me uncomfortable in any way. Compared to YouTube and other sites, everyone's actually really civil about these things here. I can even say I like the dub music, Linda Young's Frieza, and Sean Schemmel's King Kai without getting attacked.
