Which of Chris Sabat's voices for Vegeta did you like most?
Since starting in 1999, Chris Sabat has used many different voices for Vegeta. Which did you like most and when do you think Chris Sabat hit his peak as Vegeta?
In my opinion, the voice Chris Sabat used for Vegeta from 2003 to 2007 (DBGT from 2003, Season 1 and 2 from 2005, Season 3 Redub from 2007) was by far his best. I loved that version of Vegeta and I wish Chris could've re-dubbed Vegeta for the entire Orange Brick set rather than stopping after the Garlic Jr saga. It was awesome.

The Kai/BoG era voice. Much closer in tone and pitch to Horikawa, plus the acting got much better.

I understand the sentiment, and while I love Horikawa, sounding like another actor isn't a requirement for being good. He's good because his voice sounds much more natural now, though there's still an over the top quality (not a negative), as you wrote, he has more range now, and finally, he's made the character his own.SSJ4 Furanki wrote:The Kai/BoG era voice. The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

I'm not saying being like Horikawa automatically makes it better (it's just a nice bonus). But, drifiting closer to the original performance while throwing your own touch in is all you can ask for a dub.ABED wrote:I understand the sentiment, and while I love Horikawa, sounding like another actor isn't a requirement for being good. Z-Kai Vegeta's performance is amazing. Arrogant, less-accented, Sabat's really in character there.

His DBZ Kai one. His voice is more mature and brutal now.

Re: Which of Chris Sabat's voices for Vegeta did you like mo
I never liked the idea of Vegeta having a deep brutish wrestler voice and his Drummond impression was awful so I'de have to go with his Kai performance since at least now he can act without the voice getting in the way. The problem with Kai though is now his Piccolo and Vegeta sound even closer since he's basically using his natural voice with a very minor pitch change.
They should of recast one of them really but I guess when you're the voice director and producer(?) of DBKai no one will call you out for being greedy with lead roles.

I liked him more when he was trying to copy Brian Drummond.

Re: Which of Chris Sabat's voices for Vegeta did you like mo
I guess I've never really thought of it as multiple voices. More like a transition from Voice A to Voice B, over a period of several years, with Voice A being his voice when he first started and Voice B being the voice that he used as of...I think around the time Vegeta sacrificed himself in the Buu saga. Any "changes" since then haven't been to his voice, but to his acting style and his interpretation of Vegeta.
Personally, I'm a fan of Voice B. The voice itself is not at all like Horikawa's, but his acting absolutely is. Furthermore, while I love Horikawa's voice for Vegeta and think it sounds more natural, I love Sabat's voice because it sounds very beast-like. It has this rough, animal-like quality that I think is very fitting for a character that's supposed to be the prince of a race that revolves around fighting. Not to mention that, with their Oozaru origins, the Saiyans are a beast-like race in more ways than one.

The voice he's used since the 2007 season set redubs has been pretty much perfect for the character, especially in Kai. I'm also fond of his '02 Buu saga voice, which was when he completely shed the Drummond imitation

You shouldn't question somebody's character off of your own assumptions. Chris Sabat actually doesn't want to play Piccolo anymore, and in fact wanted Scott McNeil to replace him in Kai.NitroEX wrote:

Really? My, that would have been quite the headline! Either way, I like his Piccolo too.jjgp1112 wrote:You shouldn't question somebody's character off of your own assumptions. Yeah, I remember somebody here mentioning it - it may have been Kirbopher...or Sabat himself said it a con and somebody brought it up here.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Really? Re: Which of Chris Sabat's voices for Vegeta did you like mo
That's actually kinda funny given that people I've seen online generally seem to think that Sabat is much more suited to Piccolo than he is to Vegeta.
I wonder if Piccolo's importance kind of evaporating after the #17 fight has anything to do with it.

GT, Budokai games, and Kai voices are the best for me.

I like Drummond as Vegeta.
But if I had to choose, it would be his 2005/07 voice. He had some pretty memorable moments in the Freeza arc. He also totally bombed the my wrath scene hard. I was so hyped to hear his interpretation and was so disappointed. Even my younger sister said "that's it?".
But his not as pissed off but still pissed off voice can be really sweet. I especially love the scene he did when he finds out Gohan and Krillin betrayed him and he catches them in the act (in the orange brick redub). It's classic.

His voice near the end of Z and in GT was perfect to me. It just had that balance of traits I enjoyed out of Vegeta!
Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Kai. Sabat's journey from contender for worst voice acting in Funimation history to contender for best voice acting in Funimation history - for the same character - is staggering.

Re: Which of Chris Sabat's voices for Vegeta did you like mo
I'd be curious to see a link to this 'Sabat wanted to re-cast Piccolo back to McNeil for Kai' notion, because this is the first I've heard of it.
Honestly not sure how I'd have felt about that.
As for his Vegeta though, I'd say...I honestly can pretty much go with anything he's done as the character since the Boo arc's dub, really. It was at that point that his acting had hit it's first really good peak, and everything since then, while changing up, has still been great IMO.
