Can I ask this? it's apart of the Dragon ball universe!! lol
Are the VIZ manga volumes censored? I saw a page in the Japanese volume where a kid goes to a tabacco store and I was wondering how VIZ handled such things.
Thank you!

I'm also interested in this. I've been working through it in Japanese, but would prefer a good translation.
I'm wary about trusting Viz with anything these days; they can't even bother to center the words in balloons.

I've never read the Viz translation myself, but I've heard that there was indeed censorship, with depictions of kids using tobacco and alcohol removed or altered. I seem to recall they use the term "super juice" to try and write around alcohol references.

I have the whole run in both English and Japanese if there's anything specific in particular anyone can point me toward to check.
Fairly certain there are some visual edits here and there, and I'm sure the usual Viz-isms in some dialog.
All-in-all, though, it's an absolute blast of a pleasant read.

There's a few bits of censored dialogue ("super punch") that mostly just read like they're making fun of their own censorship. Peasuke's penis is missing. "Underage smoking" is censored by erasing the cigarette smoke, but leaving in the cigarette itself and making it clear the characters were smoking in the dialogue.
The dialogue, from what I've compared, is well translated, much better than Dragonball's.

That's reassuring, I suppose. I was naively hoping that the Teen rating would mean that they didn't censor anything.
Oh well. I'm sure I'll end up picking it up sooner or later.

As a note on the translation for Dr. Slump, it was done by Alexander O. Smith, known for working on several Final Fantasy games (VII, IX, X, X-2, XII) as well as the first and fourth Ace Attorney games.

While Peasuke's was missing they left Turbo and Senbei's when he was turned into a baby. Guess they were ok with it for babies. There was a funny bit when Arale's head was on Obatchaman's body and they found that Dr. Mashirito made Obatchaman anatomically correct. The English version had a black censor bar there. Guess they didn't want Crying Game jokes.

I think it was volume 3 where they show one of the younger characters going into a smoke shop. And what about Arale? I have Vol. 1 and it appears to be uncensored but i'm not fully sure. I am really surprised that viz didnt censor is more than what it appears.
