The Croatian Dub!

Given how many fans of the various dubs there are on the forum from all over the world, I decided to do some digging and showcase one particular dub that hasn't been brought to anyone's attention here yet: the Croatian dub!

Unlike many other dubs, this one is actually quite new dating from 2011. However, this wasn't the first time DB appeared on television here. In fact, back when I was a kid during the early 2000s, they aired both DB and Z in the original language with the Kikuchi score kept intact for both with Croatian subtitles. This didn't sit well with people and generally speaking everyone just watched the Ocean & Funimation dubs over at Cartoon Network, causing RTLs more accurate release to flop here. Seriously, who thinks giving a subtitled show for 5-8 year olds is even remotely a good idea?

In 2011 though, the series first 105 episodes spanning the entire Saiyan & Freeza sagas was released with a proper dub cast. You can find their names as well as a video showing the dubbing process right here: https://sites.google.com/site/dbzhrepiz ... syncro-tim

The footage used is from the original Z broadcast with no noticeable cropping or visual alterations near as I can tell with both Cha-La Head-Cha-La (Android Saga version weirdly enough) and the original Kikuchi score used instead of Rock the Dragon & Faulconer. However, the script is more or less a translated version of the Z script.

To give you an idea of what the voices are like, it seems to be a mishmash between the Ocean and Funimation deliveries with Piccolo, Krillin and Vegeta leaning towards the former while Gohan, Tien and Yamcha the latter. Goku's is a mix between the two and Freeza resembles a somewhat less posh version of Chris Ayer's Freeza. Not surprising given the fact there is no such thing as a posh Croatian accent lol. Nappa and Raditz have the deepest voices I've ever heard for them and King Kai's.... awful beyond description, you gotta hear it to believe it.

Well, I didn't ask the question first, but I had the same question. I noticed that the Croatian-dubbed version of "Chala Head Chala" uses the German instrumental track.

So it seems that the Croatian dub at least inherited Germany's audio and video materials (which were themselves inherited from France). Does the Croatian dub dialogue appear to be a translation of the German dub script?

She also voices Bulma which is really funny when you think about where these two characters end up later.

Ah now I get what you and @danielsan meant. I've never seen the German dub but its not uncommon for us to use a lot of their stuff and re-purpose it over here. Even using their own equipment at our national news station. As for the script I can't comment cause I haven't seen that lol. But from what I've seen, it sounds fairly close to the Z script of Funimation, how close are those?

Yeah, second-hand dubbing, that actually happens a fair deal in the anime dubbing business, it's not just a Croatia thing. I believe the Russian dub also uses the German version for dubbing purposes.

The German and FUNimation scripts though? Very different. The German dub's script, while not the most well-adapted script ever produced for a DBZ dub, is closer than FUNimation's.

I mean, technically that's what Japan calls them too, but the German dub was notable for being one of the few European dubs to not use French dub names (like "Space Warriors" for Saiyans and "Super Warriors" for Super Saiyans).

Yup. "Space Warriors" and "Super Warriors." To be fair, the French dub of Kai corrected this and now correctly refers to them as "Saiyans" and "Super Saiyans."

However, the majority of European dubs used the French dub as their basis, using their edited footage, audio, and scripts. The German dub tried to "correct" their translations whenever possible by using the German manga translation as a reference, and while that helped a great deal, I'm told there are still quite a number of instances where the German translation wasn't that great. Still, it's a better translation than the French one. It was especially weird to hear the French dub's terms used in an English dub (specifically, the Big Green dub, which was also based on the French dub).

Though it mostly uses Germany's audio and video materials, episode 94 and 95 have the pre-remaster DBox footage for some reason. Also, oddly enough, Intertrack's Latin American master is used in episode 100.

He says "девет хиљада/devet hiljada" in the new Serbian dub, too. However, since it doesn't have some additional lines present in FUNi's dub, probably it's not a direct translation. It must be loosely based on FUNi's.

Thanks, I will see for myself. Croatian is little simmilar to Czech language, so I'll be fine for 20 % of the stuff.

Wow, you guys really do keep track of everything DB related lol. And thanks for providing more information on the types of broadcast material they used for what episodes, I guess the kids over here got really lucky to the Dragon Box version of Goku transforming even if they don't know it.

Yes, one made by MAT Productions (The Old Serbian dub) aired in several serbian channels like TV Pink, RTS Serbia, Nais and Kanal 9 and other made by Studio Loudworks (The New Serbian dub) aired in Ultra TV, both dubs didn´t go further than Frieza Saga (the old one stopped at episode 52 and the new one stopped at episode 105)
