[Super] Why are we on a cruise ship?

Post by SuperSaiyanHedgehog » Sat Oct 17, 2015 2:43 pm

So apparently, in Dragon Ball Super, Bulma's birthday party takes place on a cruise ship, unlike in Battle of Gods, where it takes place in her backyard. But now I'm wondering: Why did they change this? Which location is canon? Do we have some kind of split timeline now? What is going on?

You don't have to animate a city if you're somewhere isolated like the ocean.

Also the animators are likely so used to animating the sea because of One Piece.

Yes, we have alternate continuities. This is nothing new to Dragon Ball. The setting was most likely changed to some on some time and budget for animating, as well as for the sake of having some fresh aspect in the retelling. Most people we already upset that they were recycling the material, and the uproar probably would have been a bit louder if it stayed in Capsule Corp's back yard.

Just a visual change. It's possible that keeping the fight out of the city was also a bonus for utilizing the budget of a weekly series. For what it's worth, I actually prefer the cruise ship setting--not that it really makes any difference.

If nothing else, it's a setting we've never really had before.

I liked the cruise ship: allowed them to have the Vegeta Fishing the Octopus, Goku and Beerus fighting underwater (mostly this), Pilaf et. al rowing, the water vortices for the SSG transformation, Vegeta sunbathing in armor, etc. It had a lot more visual potential than just boring old CC.

Because the shows budget probably wouldn't allow for the movies shtick of having Goku and Beerus fight across different locations like the city, forest, wasteland and underground as the movie did. Probably why they spend so much time in space as well.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

A birthday party on a cruise ship is more extravagant than one held in the backyard at least.

For the sake of having great differentiation between BOG and Super's retelling of BOG.

In-Universe: Bulma just wanted to be On A Boat

Out-of-Universe: As others have pointed out, it's just a lazy way for Toei to differentiate its retelling of Battle of Gods. Otherwise, it's pretty much pointless.
Favorite Movies: Alien, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Thing, Evil Dead, The Land Before Time
Favorite Shows: Cardcaptor Sakura, Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit, Wakfu, Yu Yu Hakusho
Favorite Manga: Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball
Augenis wrote:The power level view into the series has trained a significant portion of the fan base into real life stereotypical members of the Freeza empire, where each and every individual is reduced to a floating number above their heads and any sudden changes to said number are met with shock and confusion.

Your out of universe description is probably true and makes me so dissapointed how bad super is on almost all levels....
