Is Goten the son that Goku always wanted?
You know in many ways Goten is the son that Goku always wanted. A carefree innocent kid who isn't too bright but loves to fight and gets excited over everything. Aside from the fact he looks just like Goku, he also behaves similarly in many ways only that Goten has Trunks to guide him whereas kid Goku had nobody.
Kid Gohan was nothing like Goku/Goten, in the Saiyan saga he cried a lot at first and had no desire to fight. Afterwards as we know he only fought because he was forced too.
It makes you wonder why Goku doesn't purposely try to train with Goten to make him stronger. They are a match for each other. Its a shame Goten will never be utilized outside of the fusion for Gotenks because his actual character could have become the most powerful Saiyan.

Maybe he doesn't care for an 'ideal' son and hasn't put much thought into it.

Nobody gives a shit about Goten.

Haven't we already gotten these in GT? Goku dies, the DBs go away, and the Namekian DBs most likely won't be used again because of the Evil Dragons.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Was coming here to say this. I'm pretty sure Chi-Chi is the only one who cares about having an "ideal family".Captain Strawberry wrote:Maybe he doesn't care for an 'ideal' son and hasn't put much thought into it.

The appealing aspect of Goku's character is that he doesn't "want" anything. Stuff happens and he rolls with it. This leaves guys who fight or train with selfish intentions(Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Vegeta) dumbfounded.
Goku wouldn't have cared Chichi popped out a kid that looked suspiciously like Popo. He probably would've treated him the same.

Goten's a cheerful child to whom fighting and bad guys is just 'bigger' version of the playground to share with Trunks, he isn't into it that much when he grows up, nor he's obsessively competetive as Goku always was when it came to fighting, even as a kid. In that way present!Trunks is more competetive like Goku, trying to impress Goten. And of course just form a quick EOZ glance it is obvious he's at the very least 10 times smarter than his father.
To sum up - I dont see them as very alike, and even if they were it wouldn't matter since the only thing Goku cares about is food and fighting. Piccolo should've gotten those custody rights over the boys long time ago already.

I always Goten as basically a clone of clone of Goku. I mean, I understand Goten is his son, but there really isn't much to distinguish him from Goku except his character is far less intriguing and complex and Goten is more willing to drop training.

I like Goten as a character, but I don't think Goku sees Goten like that. He just sees him as a son he loves like a father should.
