It should be Cabbe, not Cabba

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

It should be Cabbe, not Cabba

Post by xmysticgohanx » Tue Jan 26, 2016 4:41 pm

(As far as I know Kyabetsu is the Japanese word for Cabbage, not the Japanese way to pronounce the English word Cabbage.)

We wouldn't translate Ninjin (hypothetical character name) as Carrot because even though Ninjin means Carrot, it is not the word the Japanese use to pronounce the English Carrot. That word is Karotto. It would be weird and ugly to call Ninjin, Carrot

Anyway, that is why Kyabe should be Cabbe and not force the cabbage too much by noticeably messing with the pronunciation.

Well, think of it only from the English wording/pronounciation point of view. VEGETA's name is a pun on VEGETAble. So, from my point of view, it probably should and will be Cabba (especially when Funimation gets the license to DB Super) because CABBA's name is a pun of CABBAge. Also, originally many people called Beerus, Bills. However, it didn't fit the BEER pun so his name was made BEERus in the end, which make sense. WHIS' name is a pun on WHISkey. I know you already know the Beerus and Whis puns, but their names are the reason why I feel Cabba's name is justified. However, they could go the Nappa route and keep the original Japanese name the way it is without trying to fit the English pun.

But Vegeta's name isn't Yas from Yasai (vegetable in Japanese) it's Beijita which is the Japanese way to say our English word. Vegeta is very, very close to Beijita.

If his name was Yas, we would use Yas not Vegeta

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/キャベツ

名前は英語に由来するが、さらにその語源はフランス語のcaboche(頭)から。 別名の甘藍(かんらん)は中国語名の甘藍(gānlán)から、玉菜(たまな)は結球する性質に由来する。
The name comes from English, though the root of the word goes further back to the French caboche, meaning "head". It's also known as "kanran", from its Chinese name "gānlán", and "tamana", a name stemming from the fact that it forms a head.

So is it their word for Cabbage or is it them trying to pronounce our word?

I like "Kabe", myself, but I'm just going with Cabba since that's what the site is using.

I believe 玉菜 (Tamana) is also the word for cabbage. The word that Cabba's name is based on is, as Adamant said, derived from English despite its French origins.

My big fear is that too many people will automatically pronounce "Cabe" to rhyme with "Abe" and it will be Gine all over again.

Overall I don't think "Cabba" is any more of a stretch than "Tullece". Though I suppose that one's not universally accepted either.

OH! I hadn't even thought of people mispronouncing it to rhyme with Abe.

"Kabe" just looked so much like the middle of a ship name that I automatically was saying it ka-beh. The long E didn't even cross my mind.

I don't think too many people would pronounce Cabbe like that (I can see people doing that with Cabe though) and it shouldn't matter too much because we will have the voice actors pronouncing his name too. Gine doesn't have that :(

Btw how is Gine pronounced again?

I mentioned that too :P
Japanese has three words for cabbage: The English loan word kyabetsu/cabbage, the Chinese loan word kanran/gānlán and the native Japanese word tamana.

Also,

There's a One Piece character named Ninjin and I'm fairly sure the extreme majority of translations call him that language's word for carrot rather than keep it as Ninjin.

Well then they messed up because what are they going to call Carrot (If you're anime-only you haven't met her yet. Shouldn't be a spoiler hopefully) now? Also Viz + Crunchyroll + fansubs + scanslations all used Ninjin.

He meant the little kid who was part of the Usopp Pirates. And using fansubs as the standard official translations should follow?

You didn't understand me, I know who he's talking about. I'm saying that in the manga (and will be in the anime eventually) there's a new girl named Carrot (not Ninjin but Carotto).

I also said the official translations AND the fan translations all used Ninjin for the Usopp Pirates dude. Official doesn't mean superior anyway. It means high quality (usually) but not superior. Otherwise we should all start calling Zoro, Zolo even though Oda doesn't

Dude, the whole of Dragon Ball, One Piece ,etc, is in Japanese. If its in Japanese, and it has an immediate equivalent in the language that is being translated to, it should be translated. Not just if the word is in English or a rough romanization of it. If anything I saw a scanlation call her Carrot (I think the scanlation you saw might have done that precisely to avoid confusion with the Usopp Pirate)

Sure, there are exceptions with Nami, Nojiko and so on.

EDIT: OOPS! You are right there. Carrot is named in English. But I still mantain that there's nothing inherently wrong with translating Ninjin.

EDIT 2: Viz calls him that. You said Viz called him Ninjin. Viz isnt always right.

Also, I have to apologize if I have come across as rude or mean. That isnt right. Sorry.

I mean Viz (and everyone else) called the Ussop guy Ninjin and the new girl Carrot. Calling the new girl Ninjin would be a pretty obvious mistake actually, regardless of whether or not Ussop's squad existed. Her name is the Japanese way to pronounce our English word Carrot (Carotto), not the Japanese word for Carrot (Ninjin). The Ussop guy is in the opposite situation and so is Cabbe I believe.

Both Funi and Carlsen translated his name.

Carlsen is the publisher of the manga in various European countries and by "Funi" I meant their DVD subtitles, I have no clue what their dub did.
