Anyone else ever heard of M.U.G.E.N?

Post by DBZAOTA482 » Thu Jun 16, 2016 3:29 pm

If you don't already now, M.U.G.E.N is freeware 2D fighting engine developed by Elecbyte. The content for it is largely created by the community for the community. The coding was made so it would be accessible to those with zero computer science experience but those who do can easily make wonders of it.

I'm certain most people are mainly familiar with the Hyper Dragon Ball Z stuff:

I've been playing M.U.G.E.N and had been a creator ever since 2007. My biggest inspirations were PoTs, Choujin, and Warusaki3. My characters' style is like mix of CVS (Capcom vs. SnK) and various DBZ games along with my own original ideas.

Here's some videos showing the character (Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butoden) I'm currently working on:

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I remember downloading a few years back from someone who had Ristar or something in their name. Had a DBZ, DBAF, and a Bleach one. Was pretty fun from what a remember, especially the AF one since they had absurd supers that took up to 15 seconds and did like 500 hits. Plus having the AI fight itself as 4 Nightmare Brolies was hilarious to watch.

I messed around with M.U.G.E.N. a bit a few years ago, but I was never able to really get as into it as I wanted to. Part of it was trying to play with a computer keyboard, and part of it was that I'm just not that great at coding in the long run. Even trying to get one of the massive character selection screens going (cuz my longterm gameplan was to basically get every character made available that I had at least a passing interest in) was such a headache that I think I ended up just using the basic one and having to switch people out whenever I wanted to try a handful of new ones.

How is the balance handled in Mugen? Or do you need to get packs or something like that for balance? Because I remember playing a DBZ Mugen (or maybe it just had a bunch of DBZ characters) a loooonnnnnngggg time ago and the balance was just crazy. Some of the characters were just absurdly powerful or had super cheap moves. For instance Jeice was in it, and he had a continuous beam attack that he could spam over and over and it would take something like 75% of your health. I think he could even direct it.

So I've actually been considering tinkering with this again - not like making stuff (I'm nowhere near that skilled), but just trying to put together my own copy of the game for my own benefit, with tons of characters to play as.

There's just one problem - even following guides, I can't for the life of me get a better character selection screen (one with a shitton of options on it) to install and run properly. Does anyone happen to know where I can download one with such a character selection screen already installed in the game? I'm hoping for one with at least a 1,000 or so selection screen menu due to the large catalogue of characters one can get for this thing.

I still remember the days of using Nightmare Broly, SSJ8 Goku, and Rare Akuma.

Fun times.
