Viz DBZ vol.1

Post by majix101 » Fri Jun 16, 2006 9:11 pm

Does anybody notice the first volume of DBZ does not have the title pages in the back of the book. Also the page where Mr. Toriyama usually says something in the front is in the back.

Yeah, Volume 1 of Viz's DBZ is also suprisingly short. Toriyama-sensei's little usual manga-ka box was also moved to the back...odd...

And try to keep from calling him 'Akira'. You don't know the man on a first name basis, do you? Sorta disrespectful, if you ask me.
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Not that surprising to me, it ends with the death of Goku and radditz. The man would not think it was short if he allowed it to be released that way.

It's really not a big deal with the name. I'm sure many people do that, and i know you don't know him on a first name basis so try to keep from disrespecting me.

But you're not a mangaka of a famous 42-volume manga, are you?

But, on a little more serious note, the Akira Toriyama dealy is sorta like an unspoken "rule" around here, so he was just trying to not get you yelled at by mods and stuff.

Actually I am, and a fan of many other "mangaka". I apologize for any harm, but just felt like that needed to be said.(Changed the name to Mr. Toriyama)

The reason Vol. 1 is short: Viz took the first 3 chapters from tankobon 17 and placed them at the end of Vol. 16. Why? Because, in Japan, the manga was just "Dragon Ball" (no Z) beginning to end. So, Viz moved the three chapters to make them correspond to "Dragon Ball Z".

And, the Toriyama segment; I just like to think: it was really early on, so they hadn't worked out the format yet.

Yeah its just viz stuffing around with the original manga like always. It really ruins it for me, as I am a perfectionist (with Dragonball only) and I must have everything perfect and original. So now that Viz have edited and changed the original manga (not including standard translation) I have to buy the original Japanese version otherwise I won't be satisfied.

On the "Akira" thing, how politically correct does the world have to become, to the point where saying someones first name (who you don't know) is disrespectful.

I don't understand how reffering to (Akira) by his first name insults him in any way or harms him mentally or physically.

If a person doesn't intend on being disrespectful, then they aren't really at fault.

Actually, it's just a common courtesy to not act as if you know someone, when you don't.

And 'intent' is not at issue, I'm sure he didn't mean to disrespect Toriyama. The problem is the act itself. He used language that implied familiarity when there was no familiarity.

Calling him 'Akira' is something we don't due because it's part of our manners. Our etiquette. It is a shared custom. It is something we do that helps everyone get along.

You just don't do it. You don't refer to someone you don't know by only their first name. I can't think of any reason why that would be appropriate.

Fair enough, I understand where you are coming from, but I don't agree. I don't want to waste posts fighting about it and I'm sure you don't either.

If you have anything more to say about the matter, feel free to pm me.
