AMD or Intel?
Does anyone know which is better for video editing, the Intel Pentium 4 series or the AMD Athlon XP series?

Probably doesn't matter. I'm not really hardware-techie, but especially with newer processors, they're all so fast that there starts being little differences among them all, especially for something like this.
The only way you'd start seeing real differences in performance with computer video editing is if you got a dedicated hardware video card (and at that point, you can only edit MPEG-2 footage natively with ridiculously high-end video cards that none of us can afford).

He's right.
Strictly from a performance POV, the P4 is a bit better than an Athalon XP. The Athalon though is miles better from a price/performance point of view. You can pick up 2800+ ones from about £60 here.
CPU's have gotten a lot faster due to the rivalry between AMD and Intel. But, to be honest, anything over 2 gig is going to be more than fast enough for almost anything you'll want to do. Just avoid anything that requires RAMBUS memory.
The 64-bit processors are nice, but not worth getting at the moment, especially as AMD are just about to unveil a new motherboard design, so if you really want one of them, wait for that.

w0rd. And if I'm not mistaken, there's not a whole ton of software out there right now, anyway, that can fully take advantage of the new processors. The advice seems to be to hold off on new higher-end computers until the new motherboards are out.

Yup. There's no point splashing out on top of the line stuff just before they release even topper of the liner stuff. You can get quite good motherboards capable of taking up to a 3200+ Athalon XP over here for about £25-35. Much more sensible to get one based around that (if you absolutly HAVE to have a new computer now), and wait a few months for the 64-bit stuff.
Mike is right, too. A 64-bit processor isn't even useful at the moment without a 64-bit operating system, and 64-bit software. And the number of people who own them is even less than the average number of non-virgins on an anime forum moderated by a 14-year old.
