Toriyama-san's DragonBall Ask Me Anything Corner??

Post by superstar » Fri Jul 21, 2006 3:17 pm

Hi, It is me again. :D

People have been telling me that Toriyama answered a lot of questions in the Dragonball Tonkoubons. I hear it is very informative, I wanted to know if this is true or not?

Yeah, it's true. My English Tankoubons of early DragonBall have the "Ask Me Anything Corner" at the end of them, translated. I don't have the volumes on hand, but I remember he answered questions from fans like "Are Oolong and Pu'ar puns on Oolong and Pu'ar tea?", and "Why did Goku say Bulma was the first human he ever had seen, when he had seen his Grandpa?" (to which Toriyama admited he had made a mistake). I guess he must have stopped having this section in the volumes eventually, since it isn't in my DBZ manga, but I have no idea when he did so.

Well, apart from being a master storyteller, Mr.Toriyama also has some of the most shoddiest character developments, storylines, and not to mention a tendency to forget what happened previously in the story. Which should explain why the DB manga has so many plot holes and story contradictions. But he admits the mistakes that he made, which is good of him.

"Toriyama-san's DragonBall Ask Me Anything Corner" for some reason ends with Tankoubon Vol. 12. You can check out the first three interviews here. Hopefully we'll get around to getting the others up eventually. :D

As far as information, there's not a whole lot that really pertains to the series. They're basically like what Swift said with a lot of "I like your manga", "When is so-and-so going to be released?", or "Have you ever done such-and-such?". One person even asked if he was handsome and another asked if he had ever been chased by a dog. They're nice reads but there's not a whole lot of questions about the series itself, especially nothing technical.

Man that 's a bummer  I thought at least Toriyama would explain the speed and fighting style of the characters in Dragonball.

Thankyou you have all been very helpful.

You have to remember that these are mostly just little kids writing in and asking him questions. They can't care any less about that kind of stuff, and probably can't even comprehend it. I mean, at this point in time, the guy's mostly known for writing poop jokes.

Right, because according his recent interview for the U.S version of Shonen Jump magazine, at the begining of the serialization of Dragon Ball back in 1984, he was "still suffering the after-effects of Dr. Slump."

Yeah you are right about that VegettoEX, The infamous question concerning the speed and fighting style of the Dragonball world will forever be a mystery, only god knows.

Thankyou for your help everyone God Bless. :)

One of the Shonen Jumps did a best of Ask Toriyama too. Actually my Japanese Dr Slumps have 2 pages of letters too which Viz didn't include. It'a a shame as many of them have photos so I'd love to know what was going on.
