Manga to Anime episode length

Post by FiReFTW » Thu Jun 18, 2020 4:38 pm

I was trying to figure out how many episodes we would get in the anime when Super would return to Anime form, where we are currently in that department.

So I went back to check a bit and I noticed that DB Super has a bit over 40 manga chapters and went for like 130~ episodes.
Meanwhile this Moro arc has almost 20 chapters now and it might go for quite a bit more (maybe), does that mean this chapter could be like 60 or more episodes long??

One weird thing I notice was tho, that when I checked Dragonball and Dragonball Z manga, they have almost 600 manga chapters, which is more chapters than total episodes, hows that possible then if Super has more than 3 times less manga chapters than episodes? Are the manga chapters now longer or whats the deal with this?

Correct: Dragon Ball Super started with significantly shorter chapters.

We have all of this outlined in our manga guide for you to check out, but when the series began, it was running roughly 15 pages each chapter. This jumped to about 19 for the beginning of the Champa arc, and even then just a few chapters into that we jumped up to 31 pages per chapter (starting with chapter 9). We jumped up AGAIN at the end of the arc (chapter 13) to 39 pages, and it hung out here until the next milestone of 45 pages at chapter 21.

It's been 45 pages per serialized chapter ever since, with the occasional chapter receiving new pages in the collected edition (namely chapters 23 and 42 getting four and two additional pages, respectively).

(The Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc begins at the end of chapter 42 and is still going as of today's release of chapter 61.)

A similar situation happened previously with Toyotaro's work on Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission, which started as literally just a two-page spread for its debut chapter, and eventually turned into a genuinely serialized story averaging 15 pages by its end.

(15 pages end of VM to 15 pages beginning of Super! It's almost like they knew what his work output was at the time! )

Considering the start of the Moro saga begins in chapter 43 of the manga, episode 61 has currently come out.

Today Toei has 18 episodes of the manga to adapt. The important thing is that in the entire Moro saga the average number of pages per episode is 42 and the record has been reached this month with 48 pages.

An episode of the One Piece manga has approximately 21 pages. Super has twice as many pages per manga episode.

Toei adapts the One Piece anime with the average of 1 episode from the manga = 1 episode from the anime. What would also be 1 episode of the One Piece anime = 21 pages.

If Toei adapts Super in the same way, they should do 2 anime episodes = 1 manga episode (21 + 21 pages)

In other words, they should adapt the 18 episodes of the manga that are currently in 36 anime episodes.

The important thing is that the Super manga, unlike One Piece, is very accelerated. Toei could extend into development and make adaptation longer. If we also add that the first 4-5 episodes are usually filled to introduce Goku and his friends today, they could adapt the manga in 40-45 episodes of the anime.

In conclusion, today the manga has content for 1 full year of anime with almost no filler.

There's a lot of existing material they can expand too.

Androids 17 & 18 could fight Moro for two episodes. Hell, they could toss in an episode where the two fuse.

They could dedicate an entire episode to Yamcha fighting Moro's goons, splitting the narrative a lot like Bleach does.

Yeah they can expand on things a fair bit. The Dragon Team vs. Galactic Bandit Brigade battles weren't that long for some.

Tien and Chiaotzu's battle with Quoitur could be half a episode in itself. Goku vs Saganbo could be a whole episode.

I expect this arc to be around 50 episodes long. Beyond what they already have, we'll get an reintroduction episode or 2, expanded fights, more detailed training, longer flashbacks, etc.

If this is ever animated I’d definitely love to see more of Vegeta’s training on Yadrat

It depends on how much they want to pad it.
If the following arc they go back to Toriyama writing outlines, then it’s possible they may go for a almost fillerless adaptation of Moro arc and adapt basically 1 chapter per episode. So, up to the recent chapter, it would be at least 19 episodes long but it would probably be slightly longer because they may add some scene, and extend others, so maybe around 20-21 as of chapter 61.

Assuming the arc lasts for at best other 5 chapters, I think that 26 episodes, 2 cours, would be perfect for Moro’s arc once the anime adapts it.

But if they decide to make the anime a full on going weekly adaptation of the manga, then the arc may very well get something like 39 episodes.

Toei is the king of padding, so everything in the manga will get stretched out. This is the same company that took an 85 minute RF movie and turned it into a 12 hour long arc.

If Toei does the Moro Arc, I think they'll continue to base it on Akira Toriyama's script. In the July 2019 interview in the Mickey's newspaper, Toyotaro confirms again that he is based on Toriyama's script, and at that time we were already at chapter 8 of the Moro Arc!

There are manga scenes that could create incoherences like when Muten Roshi talks about his fight against Jiren in Krilin!
