How to get into the Super manga?
How to get into the Super manga?
I am approaching the end of the Super anime and I want to know how to get into the manga.
1. Is it necessary to read the arcs that are covered by the anime in order to understand the rest?
2. Even if it's not necessary, would you recommend it? Is there value in reading the same stories told a little differently?
3. This is not entirely related, but I intend to watch the "Super Hero" movie after finishing the anime..Does it contain spoilers from the manga?

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
"Is it necessary?" is kind of a hard thing to answer. You have all the basics from the TV series, but the manga has certainly done its own things along the way that are kiiiiiind of unique to it. The biggest thing here is perhaps the usage of Super Saiyan God vs. Super Saiyan Blue and their own idiosyncrasies, which are built upon and have consistency unique to the manga. You'd probably pick up on it and just roll with it, but it's worth noting.
Toyotaro's "Goku" in particular is much more in line with Toriyama's own original manga "Goku" in terms of overall characterization, so it would be nice to have a through-line with that from beginning to end. The chapter page count also doesn't start to creep up for a little bit, so it's actually "less" content than it looks like from a raw chapter list. It's still basically eight and a half volumes of content before "new" stuff...
I guess at bare minimum I'd say it's worth reading the Future Trunks / Zamasu arc for its wealth of differences (and the aforementioned SSG/SSB stuff)... and at that point, you might as well just read the other stuff, too. I would recommend it, as it's largely going to be a breeze to read.
The Super Hero movie was conceived of and written before the post-Tournament of Power manga arcs were released, so it has no references to anything beyond the content of the TV series. The manga version of Super Hero (other than the abbreviated Battle of Gods in the first four chapters, the only movie that gets adapted in the manga) has its own unique three-chapter prologue and three-chapter epilogue for the movie (and some mid-movie additions/adjustments with the benefit of hindsight), so that's worth keeping in mind, too.
The nice thing is that, if it's available in your region, the whole darn manga is available on Viz's vault service for $3/month. You can just read the whole thing for suuuuuuper cheap!

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
Is it necessary to read the whole manga? Maybe not, as it covers the same broad strokes as the anime. I would definitely recommend it though.
It's often quite different, a big change being that Goku doesn't absorb the power of super Saiyan god into his base form after fighting Beerus. The zamasu and tournament of power are also incredibly different in how everything unravels.
It is more consistent in terms of world logic, with the anime often feeling like it was being passed around from writer to writer without them overly caring about consistency. There are pros and cons to that approach, but I definitely prefer the manga all being written by the same people
The super manga covers Super Hero in its entirety, + has its own unique prologue and epilogue. So if you watch the film, you'll be covering a lot of the same ground when you read the same arc in the manga (they're very very similar except for the prologue and epilogue that the manga included). However, Super Hero will not spoil any of the unique arcs in the manga that take place before Super Hero and after the Tournament of Power.

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
I'd suggest a read of the whole manga
Toyo took full advantage of the fact he was coming after the anime to avoid the same mistakes\fix the perceived problems with the anime portrayal of the events.
Also: Toyo's rendition of various characters is quite different from the anime.
Zamasu and Jiren have practically OPPOSITE elements to them compared to the anime, so it's better make sure you know both to cover your basis for future discussions and possible developments.
Having watched the anime first makes you appreciate Toyo's work much more.
as for Super Hero: just make sure to watch Broly first. Which, by the way, was not covered in the manga so you have to watch it anyway lol.

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
You will find out how the Majin Buu saga events played out for Trunks within Future Trunks saga. It was wonderfully adapted in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. So you will want to play (or watch it on Youtube) Dragon Ball Z Kakarot if you read the manga, if you want to experience movements, soundtrack, voice acting and whatnot.
Re: How to get into the Super manga?
The only arc which is pretty identical to the anime is BoG I think. And even then, this is more like a recap so reading it, shouldn't take much time and effort. And after this there are actually some differences but the most you'll find in Zamasu and ToP arcs. I actually prefer a lot of ideas in the manga in those two stories and I think these at least are a must reads if you're interested in the manga.
Then there are of course Moro and Granolah, which are completely original stories despite how you enjoy them.
Surely Super is entirely different of an experience than the original manga, where you got the full story just reading the manga or watching the anime based on your preferences.
Now you must take anime, manga and the movies into consideration to get the full story

2. When I'm asked which Super's version is better my answer is "read the manga". It's better than anime, makes more sense, but it's still badly written product. Bad but still better than anime.
3. No. The movies (BoG, RoF, Broly and Super Hero) aren't connected to the anime or manga. They work as a different continuation because they're written by Toriyama and anime and manga are not. There are no spoilers for the manga, because in the "Super Hero" universe the events of manga after the Tournament of Power never happened.

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
I would recommend to not read it.
It's quality is very different from the anime, it's worse in almost everything. Honestly the only thing it did better than the anime was the Future Boo flashback and that was just because the anime barely touched it.
P.S. No, Super Hero doesn't spoil anything from the manga. It and Broly ignores it completely.

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
I think the fight between Beerus and Champa is handled better in the manga than the anime. A rare visual escalation of the scale of combat beyond what we got in the Namek arc.ZombieVito wrote: Mon Sep 09, 2024 7:22 pmHonestly the only thing it did better than the anime was the Future Boo flashback and that was just because the anime barely touched it.

One page at a time. How to get into the Super manga?
..........like most people here I'll agree, it's not "necessary" (but, no manga or anime is necessary).
I do recommend it though. In general it's a lot more competently produced than the anime, with enough differences to be worthwhile even if you more or know what's going to happen next. It doesn't feel lazy or rushed in the same way that much of the anime did, and a lot of the weird tonal missteps or mischaracterizations that plagued the anime are not present.
And, of course, it continues for quite a bit longer than the anime, so you have a couple new stories to look forward to as well.
As for Super Hero, no, not really, watch it now. It rules!

1. Nope. I don't think any manga-specific detail gets brought up. You can safely watch the anime and pick up the manga post Broly.smiley wrote: Fri Sep 06, 2024 5:12 pm I am approaching the end of the Super anime and I want to know how to get into the manga.

2. I wouldn't recommend the Granolah the Survivor Saga, it's really bad and nothing relevant has carried to the next sagas so far (Other than the ending twist, which is recapped in the first chapter anyway). You can start with Goku vs Hit since everything else is the same as the anime and movies up to that point.
So basically Goku vs Hit --> Zamasu Saga --> ToP --> Moro --> Super Hero
3. Kinda? The manga saga does a 1:1 adaptation, so other than a few details it's the same. There's a prequel and an epilogue though, and the movie doesn't spoil them at all.

Couldn't disagree more. It's annoying as hell people skipping to the manga only arcs then fucking details and power scaling stuff up on forums.GreatSaiyaman123 wrote: Tue Sep 17, 2024 12:23 pm1. Granolah has a cool development for Goku and there's some new stuff that will be totally a factor when the manga comes back, which was confirmed. It does drag but less than all the anime arcs do. It's fine on reread.
The manga has basically a prequel to the movie but then the main part is a bit more fun in the movie. So you can do it either way. Maybe movie first for the hype.

I feel you on the first one. Just told OP to skip it because I assume he's a casual fan. Die-hard fans probably would start the manga without question.
2. True UI was completely ignored in the Super Hero Saga, but we'll see.
3. Agreed.

Re: How to get into the Super manga?
Open Chapter 1.
Or open Chapter 42, where the post-anime storylines start. There are differences from previous arcs carried forward, but not to the extent that you'd be left scratching your head.
Yes, I'd recommend it. Personally my vastly preferred version of Super.
Super Hero does not carry over anything specific to the manga and can be watched after the anime. It also has an expanded adaptation as part of the manga.

I think you need to understand the difference between your personal opinion and something that is factual which is something that you clearly can not do, and your last point downright false !Trouser wrote: Mon Sep 09, 2024 6:14 pm1. I would say read the future trunks saga, Its different somethings worse somethings better. But still worth a read
