DragonBall Movie #1 DaizEX FanSub Project

Post by ect5150 » Mon Nov 19, 2007 11:38 pm

I would like to propose a project to any who are interested.

I think it is clear the US will never see Dragon Ball Movie #1 ever released within our borders in a subtitled format for whatever reasons.

If you wish to see it, you currently have only 2 real options.

1) Purchase the MadMan R4 releases
or
2) Purchase the DragonBox Movies release (I am assuming the singles will be released after the GT discs)

The R4 discs only have the English soundtrack and is edted, and the R2 discs have no subtitles. This leaves no viable option for those who wish to purchase a disc with the English subtitles and Japanese audio track.

I would like to propose that the DBZ community fix this by providing our own subtitles and means to adding them to a DVD. This would require a fan to purchase the R2 release of the DragonBox Movies (box set or singles disc) and add our own community subtitles. It must be the R2 disc as it is the only version that contains the Japanese audio.

I am willing to handle most of the technical parts of the project. Many of you may have seen the photo where I added subtitles from FUNIs release of DBZ movie 12 to the DragonBox release.

Image

I plan to offer the subtitles in a variety of formats, to either be played on a computer, from an AVI/MP4/MKV file, and muxxed into the VOB files to be played directly from the DVD player as in the shot above.

The project would ONLY be a distributable script. No downloading of the movie, video or audio. Only the script in several different formats so individuals may use it to their own purpose. Individuals would be able to purchase a legal copy (either through a used DragonBox Movies or the Singles when it is released) and apply the subtitles we create. The hosting page will offer instructions on how to go about doing this.

As long as we are not providing the community with the audio or video, I think we should be fine from a legal standpoint.

What I cannot do is translate Japanese.

If you can help translate accurately and wish to help, let me know. If you can't, but know someone that can, please point them in my direction. I've grown tired of waiting on FUNI and have turned to the community to fix this. I'm ready to do some work and I'm just looking for someone else who feels the same.

NOTE: I should note the subtitles will be timed for the DragonBox Movies footage though.

God, this is creepy. Just a couple of hours ago, I was having a conversation with some people from the forums about possibly doing a fandub project of this movie after the DBZ Movie 3 one finishes.

I'm kind of interested in translating a script, and I do have the movie comic and a VHS copy to work from until an individual R2 disc of it is released, but I probably wouldn't be able to start for at least a few more weeks. I should mention, though, that I am concerned about the legality of doing a whole subbed encode instead of just a distributable script, if that's what you mean by AVI etc.

Oh, and for clarification, the movie is available in R1, from the Kidmark set (which is STILL in print, unlike FUNi's uncut bilingual sets, sadly), but only in the hacked up 1995 dub. But, no one buy that. Please.

You didn't specify that Madman's R4 release of the movie is edited and English dub only, obviously. Just wanted to point that out.

Well, yeah, I do know there was previously a VHS fansub done a long time ago, along with every other movie. But trying to find or make an encode of that, or even old fashioned tape trading, would probably be far more of a hassle than just doing a new script for use with DVDs.

I for one would welcome this, just recently I completed my DB dvd collection (picked up movies 2, 3 and Path to Power last week)

And I was annoyed to be stuck with a heavily edited dub only copy of movie 1, and to be honest, since I've purchased all of the legitimate bilingual DB releases from madman, I feel I'm actually entitled to something like this, because if they put the movie out properly, I would purchase it in a second.

I actually have seen a digisub of it before from what I assume was the dragon box footage. It was a couple years ago though and I sadly no longer have the file. It was done by one of those major DBZ pirating groups that we're forbidden to talk about on this forum. I can't remember specifically which but there probably is a torrent of it somewhere out there.

If it was from a couple of years ago, it wasn't Dragon Box footage. The Dragon Box for the movies came out just last year, if my memory serves me right April 20 is when mine arrived. Maybe it was a digisub using footage from the Laser Disc or VHS release.

Speaking of Laser Disc, a couple of months ago there was a funny graphic in which a Laser Disc "got played", here on the forums. If anybody has it, could you put up a link? I'd like to show it to my brother. Wouldn't be surprised if nobody knows what the hell I'm talking about.

I did this a few months ago using the only unedited japanese version of the movie I could find. Didn't feel bad about doing it because I've got the english dub vhs sitting in my closet. I also did this for The OVA ("it's not an OVA! Blargh!") I could rip the subtitle file if you want.

^ I think that would be a better idea if ect5150 does. I mean, I say as long as Helldog's script is good and timed correctly then we should use his.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Sure, send it on. Where is the script from though? (who translated?). Ideally, I'd like to have a couple of people translate it and take a 'best of' from different lines.

I'm not worried about the timings, I can adjust if needed.

Here's the subtitles track, as ripped from my custom DVD. Unfortunately, DVDLab Pro only allows the types of subtitles that are pictures of words. This should help with timing and a basic translation though.

I'm gonna watch the movie with the subs tommorrow to see if anything is missing. So far the narrator's prologue is the only thing missing from the script that Helldog provided.

The main thing that's missing is the beginning narration. There are a few smaller things missing, but the beginning is the important part.

Although, it sure doesn't seemed to be timed correctly... but I can take care of that easy enough with a little work. Although I do find some of the translation odd after watching Daimao's stuff for a while, especially the opening theme and closing theme.

But the subtitles look like they'll be good enough with some alterations.

I'm interested in a script although I have one myself (have no idea where I got it from) I know that one isn't very accurate even with my limited knowledge of Japanese.
Whichever format you provide I will be able to play it although my end goal is re-authoring dvd's, at the moment I have to suffice with loading srt files in Zoom Player.
For some reason I am not able to add subs to a dvd without them eventually getting out of sinch (while they aren't in Zoom Player) and messing with the Chapters.

Quoting one is plagiarism.
Quoting many is research.

Hi all,

Something like this already exists on a certain torrent tracker which i dunno if i may post the link of.

But that tracker has DragonBox the Movies disc 1 (including db movie 1-3)
with fansubs.

So I watched the movie with Helldog's script and it's pretty accurate. It did have to be re-timed a little and some attack names are missing, but the subtitle work was of good quality. Then again, anything's better than nothing in this case though.

So far, even after my re-timing, the script is still mistimed so I'll fix that. And last but not least, we need somebody who has more knowledge of Japanese than myself to sub the Prologue. I'm in that awkard position were I understand what he's saying, but I can give a good translation of it. Other than that there aren't any major problems.

Now not everybody has the Dragonbox so I can make a clip of the prologue, if possible, and post a link to it. So then if there's somebody who's out there than can give a proper translation they'll have easy access to it.

The purpose of this project is to have subtitles for an already purchased Dragonbox so that one can re-author the Dragonball Movie 1 on their own. We're not providing any type of movie file or audio file or encouraging any type of downloading whatsoever, just a subtitled script.
