Toriyama's manga and art style

I have actually decided to drop a bit into fanboyism and create a fan manga of Dragon Ball, however, as opposed to most Dragon Ball fan manga, I am trying to make it as truly Toriyama-spirited as possible (weird adventures with a constant feeling of gag comedy).
The only other person that I've seen to make a truly Toriyama spirited manga is Mr. Announcer Guy; her stuff can be found on DiviantART.

I was looking through my volumes of Dragon Ball manga for reference today and something struck me that I've never really noticed before. Even though Toriyama's characters are a bit on the surrealistic basic side, his landscapes for a weekly manga are surprisingly breath-taking. I guess I've looked at them before, but never really paid attention to it before now simply because I was more focused on the characters and speech balloons.

As for my fan-manga, I'm having a difficult time making the rock formations look Tori-style.

You may also want to check out the AF " Doujinshi ".
Very Toriyama spirited, almost the point of it being a downright perfect replica of his style.

I think Toriyama had quite a few assistants (something Kentaro Miura of Berserk fame needs... Hell, so does Yoshihiro Togashi, author of Hunter x Hunter), so that could explain why his backgrounds were so detailed.

There's tons of DBAF doujinshi, and if we're talking about the same one, then unfortunately I have to say that I don't share your views because even though it gives off the sense of being a Toriyama drawn manga, it's nothing but tracings of his already produced work.

Most of the panels are photocopies or tracings of the original manga panels, with several altered details like hair and clothes. Everytime I see that panel with Vegeta down on the ground, I can roll my eyes and only see the same panel of Vegeta down on the ground during the Zarbon battle on Namek.

It's taking place right after Z. I wanted to keep it as close to the canon series as possible. I decided to shift the focus to Goten, because I think that retiring Goku from the series was Toriyama's intent when he created Goten.

Cool. I like where your going with it. I actually sort of started one myself a little while ago, taking place right after the Tapion movie. I lack focus though, so I may not go to far with it (I've only draw two random panels in the last two weeks

). And the story is a sort of made up as I go along.

Toryama also goes into great detail when drawing his machines and robots. He has produced entire picture books based solely on his elaborate designs for the vehicles in Dragonball and Dr. Slump. Many of his designs are also found in the Daizenshuu (hopefully Daizenshuu 1 has a few so we can see them when the translated copy comes out later this year). It's just one of the unique traits of his I've noticed along with his amazing landscapes.

Daizenshuu 1 is focused purely on Toriyama's color artwork, mostly the color title pages and covers he made for DragonBall, and some other things he did for Jump and DB video games and such. So while there are a lot of beautiful colored pictures that include his vehicles, there are now sections focused on them. Daizenshuu 4, though, has a 20 page section on the vehicles of DragonBall, including comments by Toriyama on how he designed them and sometimes what real-world vehicle they're based on.

Alright, thanks for the information Herms, sounds like Daizenshuu 4 is one of the best ones. Time to order it!
