TOEI acknowledges there really is an "O.A.V."?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

TOEI acknowledges there really is an "O.A.V."?

Post by Dayspring » Fri Sep 19, 2008 4:00 am

Noticed this in the introduction to the Dictionary section of Daizenshuu 7:
"This dictionary contains all the words necessary for comprehending the Dragonball universe. Note the abbreviations of this dictionary, [part.] for particularities and complimentary information, for the elements that only appear in the anime (series and O.A.V.), and [anim.] to distinguish which elements occured in the anime but not the manga.
Take that with a grain of salt (especially since it's being translated at 4:00am and from the French version), but this is a case where the OVA is literally being referenced as just that, instead of characters and plot elements themselves being referenced. In other words, movie 9 isn't pointed out specifically, there's bios for Bojack and co, etc, as if movie 9 was merely another saga or episode that took place in the story. Meanwhile, here the OVA is being listed specifically as an OVA.

Note that "O.A.V." isn't a French acronym, yet they used it, meaning they borrowed it from English (unless "O.A.V." exists in Japanese, too).

Of course, now that I wrote out aaaaaaaall this, I acknowledge the possibility that "O.A.V." in this context merely refers to all the regular DB and DBZ movies. :P

Anyhoo, what are your thoughts on this? Was EX wrong all along? :P

The Japanese edition only mentions "the anime", and doesn't say anything about "both TV series and OVA". I know this isn't exactly official, but the Japanese Wikipedia page for the thing refers to it as an OVA.

I think that's actually quite likely. Lots of people have been calling the movies "OAVs" for a long time, in France. Heck, some still do.

Well, yeah. Tôei themselves have confirmed the OVA thing on their page.

I guess it depends on your definition of OVA. The movies were made for the cinema, weren't they? And the specials were made for TV. So strictly speaking they aren't straight to video, which is the normal definition of OVA.

I'm still not sure about the whole deal with the video game and the so called OVA that came from it. Or was it vice versa? See, I have no idea any more.

It went like this:

NES game
OVA based on plot of NES game
Playdia games comprised of footage from OVA based on plot of NES game.
To a strong man, the end justifies the means. To a stronger man, the means justify the end.

Yes, Ex was wrong. He thought the VHS was released after the Playdia games, and that's why he claimed "there [was] no OVA", because he thought that the games came first and that it couldn't be classified as a "home video" product, but rather as "video game footage".

However, the VHS was released in August 1993, and the 1st Playdia game in September 1994. So it really is an OVA.

And it was classified as such by Toei since the beginning: http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/ov1990.html

This was all settled long ago, and there really isn't any reason for Ex's original rant about that. It's an OVA, and he just got the dates wrong, period. The only problem is that he never corrected his original article. He updated it, yes, but I guess he was too proud to drop his "no OVA" stance, or too afraid to admit he was wrong (just like other membres of this forum), after so long, so even with the correct dates he's sticking to it, in a new version of the article that makes no sense whatsoever.

As far as I know, the dates in our page on the site have always been the same (read: correct). I have certainly revised text for clarity a couple times, but that is all I am aware of. Yes, back in 1998 none of us had a freakin' clue what it all was, but... well... this isn't 1998, and this isn't "VegettoEX's Home Page".

The reason I keep the page's title what it is (and why I called it that in the first place; note the directory is named "/playdia") is very simple and totally transparent:

It causes fanboy discussion, gets attention, and drives traffic.

All the information is right there foe those interested enough to read it, though... I think... No-one's really offerred any suggestions in a while... nor have I really had the time to dedicate to old, mostly-complete pages :)

To add to the discussion, let it be known that I haven't missed that the above post is a contribution by a member with one post where the contents make it a point to attack the integrity of the site and its forum's members. We are all plenty happy to openly discuss stuff, so there's really no need to be cute about attacking pride and that kind of silly nonsense. Please all, sign up and post because you want to talk with your peers and make friends (all that awesome shonen stuff)... not to be a mean poopie head. Not that it was necessarily the intent, but that's sure how it reads.

Er... I'm pretty sure that your main "there is no OVA" argument was that the animation first appeared in the game and was then recycled for the VHS, at one point...

EDIT: Yup.

Fair enough. No issue on my end with showcasing what's been updated/changed. Like I said, any additional suggestions are welcome. I know that Olivier and I went through a few clarification-updates at some point, but I don't remember how much made it to the current version of the page.

It's in a position where it is quite easy to update the page, so lemme know whatcha got. I could definitely stand to scan better versions of the games and such, themselves, since I actually own all the Playdia stuff, now.

God, replying on an iPhone is difficult :P

For what it's worth, that footage is so shitty I don't really consider it anything.

Keep the page title the way it is, I'm too used to it at this point.
