Your First Dragonball Websites

Post by Suupaa Gohan 2 » Wed Dec 10, 2008 11:42 am

Couldn't think of a great title. Bleeeeh.

Anyways, I got the idea from the nostalgia-fueled discussions going on in the DBZ Uncensored thread, but didn't think this was a topic worth sidebarring into on that thread and taking it off its original topic, since DBZ Uncensored is in a league of its own as far as your nostalgic memories of 'first' DBZ sites.

Anyways, *ahem* what were the first DBZ-based websites you started frequenting back in ye olde days of the fandom? I realize this will be more enjoyable for us older fans, but even if you've more recently got into the series feel free to share - I'm actually strangely interested in knowing how much the quality of DBZ fansites has improved today versus the stuff we got 10 years ago.

For me, the list contains some of everyone's nostalgic favorites - VegettoEX's Homepage (lulz), Temple O' Trunks, PlanetNamek.com, DBZ Uncensored, etc...but oddly enough, the site I remember visiting every single day back in my very oldest fandom days was one of those generically BAD fansites - unlike the aforementioned that actually strived to have some quality baked into 'em.

I found it in the old web archives recently and wow...it's the epitome of the way typical fansites were back in those days. It made me smile in the odd and humorously nostalgic way when you know something was so terrible but you loved it anyways. It was the first place for me, really - DBZ was in the Saiyajin Saga on Toonami when I first started being exposed to DBZ on the web (in general, actually, these were the years I first started using the internet at all); it was where I saw my first picture of Super Saiyajin Gokou and said 'WTF that's not what Gokou looks like!!', where I first got my (looking back on them extremely vague) episode summaries and learned about the whole series that was so far away at that time...Hell, it's where I first started spelling our favorite interplanetary apes 'Sai-Yan' (as you can see at the top of your browser's titlebar), and if I'm not mistaken where I originally picked up the spelling Gokou that I'll never drop.

Eventually the site itself went down and was replaced with a flipped and terribly-translated version of the Trunks vs. Cyborg Freeza chapters of the Manga, loaded up fandub-style with more profanity than you can shake a stick at. It's still available here.

Best viewed in Internet Explorer 4.0...oh, lulz.

Soooo...what do you remember as being your old favorite DBZ websites?

The first Dragon Ball site I ever went on was Vegeta Insane, I loved that site, I was like 12 and found everything fascinating back then.

I also visited Funimation's site and Toonami heavily back then.

The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Back in the day I mostly wandered around dutch DBZ websites. Every character had his/her domain, such as Krillin.NL, Goku.NL, Trunks.NL, etc. All the sites were basically the same, but it did inspire me to also purchase a domain... which was Bulma.NL (yes, very creative I know).

As for english sites, I remember I was quite fond of a site called Oujo, dedicated to Vegeta and his family. They had a lot of fun stuff.

I never visited Planet Namek, I missed out on that one. But I hear from a lot of people that it was a legendary site so I do regret never being able to visit...

Dragon Ball Z: Uncensored was the very first DBZ site I ever went to and it's also when I learned about all the cool things that Funimation/Saban did to the show. I finally got answers to questions I had about the show like why people were getting kicked through mountains and not bleeding and why buildings were empty on Sunday.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If we're all here for a reason then I'm just visiting.

If it's held in your heart then you can't let go.

Hm. Part of what got me onto the internet more wasn't so much a fansite as a fanfiction site... which, despite still being up, is effectively dead (to the extent that the message board was recently renamed to reflect the fact that it's not so much a DB-based board anymore as it is "where those of us that didn't run away hang out").
I occasionally poked around the old DBZ fansites, mostly just to look for things I could use in whatever project I was working on at the time (I gave up on that rather quickly though; I was mostly looking for pictures, at hte same time that my vision was getting too weak to distinguish what the images I found actually depicted...). I put a few in my favorites and read some other sections (DBGT-Legacy, I think? And "Northern Wind"?), but I didn't really frequent any of them.
I think I stumbled upon Daizex in 2005 or so, which got me into the idea of doing some simple audio series with no serious plot... that never took off, but since I have notes on it they pointed me back to Daizex, and that's basically Me, DBZ and the internet in a nutshell. (Reference unintended, but apppriate?)

Planet Namek.

I used to download piss poor scans of the Dragonball manga from their site. I still have very fond memories of doing so. I had a folder that had a bunch of their poor scans printed out that I used to take to school with me. A guy in my Biology class saw it and said "Oh man your into this shit too?!" We ended up talking about it for quite some time. Mind you this is well before Dragonball caught on here. We found out we had many of the same interests, and I ended up trading a dubbed "Street Fighter II: V" tape for a tape of "Dragonball Z" episodes directly from Japanese broadcast television. The tape has somewhere near four hours of episodes on it all from the Freeza saga. That was my first exposure to the television series in Japanese. Popping that tape into this VCR is still one of my most favorite memories.

I still have the tape after all these years, and I don't even have a VCR.

Sorry, I got a little nostalgic.

Wow... this brings back memories.

Suushinchuu, DBZ Uncensored!, Planet Namek, Temple o' Trunks and Vegetto EX's Homepage were all hit several times a day. OH! The Ultimate Dragon Ball Info Site! I'd be on THAT page for hours, which really pissed my mom off since we were on dial-up at the time.

They were all great resources for information, back when there was actually new information coming out. I had been watching the Japanese version for quite some time but never really had a grasp on the subtleties of the story or the characters, so I really owe a lot of my enduring fandom to them.

Anybody remember PN's Universe section? I think that was solely responsible for the massive confusion on the Kaioshins, Dai Kaio and Kaios' roles:

A) "There were 4 Gingas, each containing 4 Galaxies."
"Kaioshins ruled over a Ginga, while Kaios ruled over a Galaxy."
-This led to the belief of there being 4 universes, and/or 16 galaxies. 4 universe theory made for time travel confusion, as we knew there were 4 timelines.

B) "The Four Kaioshins report to the Dai Kaioshin, who therefore rules over the entire Universe."
"The Four Kaios report to the Dai Kaio, who therefore rules over the entire Ginga."
"The Dai Kaio reports to the Kaioshin."
-This led to confusion over the Kaioshin's job, as well as the belief that Kibito was the Dai Kaio.

C) "Boo destroyed the Northern, Western and Eastern Gingas."
"Broly destroyed the Southern Galaxy of the Southern Ginga."
"Every planet we see throughout the Dragonball, DBZ, and DBGT is in the Northern Galaxy of the Southern Ginga."
-This led to the to the belief that, well, everything in C was true.

I was working on collecting some titles to share and memories of them, but I'm bogged down with work stuff at the moment and have to run in a bit to install some things...

... so hopefully I'll get back to it later...

But I did want to say how entirely different the internet was back when I first started visiting DBZ sites back in 1996, and yet at the same time, it's still the same retarded place it was back then :P.

My first site ever was Lelola, a site that covered several different anime. It's still up today as a sort of legacy page, but all the stuff on DragonBall was removed at some point. The one thing I really remember was that they had an extremely bad power level list. Most DB sites did of course (with varying levels of badness), but this was the first one I ever saw, so I didn't have anything to compare it with. It covered all of DB and DBZ, but not DBGT, because as it said at the end there was nothing official to go of off (not that it stopped them with everything else). This was very important for me because I hadn't seen most of the series at that point, and so this list of all the major characters and attacks at each point in the series was my first glimpse into DragonBall's structure as a whole. I didn't actively seek out spoilers or summaries, so that list really shaped my early understanding of the series, as sad as that may seem.

After that I very briefly stopped by Planet Namek (I think this would have been shortly before they fell into the sea), spent a lot of time at DBZ Uncensored, and was on the AnimeNation DB forum. I still stopped by Lelola every now and then, mostly for their non-DB stuff, and then one day in the news section they had a link to the newly reopened Daizenshuu EX.

Hmm... The very first... I'm not 100% sure of, but Vegetto EX might be one of them, at least that I recall. Wait, as I recall there were a couple of sites that had a good variety of Japanese Dragonball clips. I can't seem to recall what their names... Think it was named something with Gohan... Or the owner might've called himself that. Could anyone help me recall some more?

One big fish I do recall visiting daily was Planet Namek (mainly for the news, the commumity wasn't all that great).

I remember the first time I misspelt the z in www.dragonballz.com site with an x. I'm sure everyone remembers that.

Planet Namek

Back when the only web access I had at home was my old WebTV, I would visit two or three times a day. It was the first place I ever got to see a "Things Dragonball Z characters would never say." section. Classic.

www.dragonballz.de

Back in the day, it was the number 1 site for DB in German. Images, sounds, music, clips, infos!
When DBZ started airing in Germany (2001 or so), the site was flooded with youngsters, kids, noobs, idiots, rookies and fuckers! They changed the terminology (to the dub names) and after the airing, no one were keeping the site up to date.
Today, it's a fucked up shadow of it's former self.

Wow, I remember that site! I used to visit it all the time too, mostly for the DragonBall screenshots. I can't read german so that was the only thing I did there. :P
Edit: You're right, I can't even recognize it anymore!

If I remember it right it was a place called "DBZ Unlimited". The top banner was Dragonball themed (of course) but also had a dictionary definiton of the word "unlimited".
I don't remember a whole lot about it except that it had power levels, name puns and a section that had a bunch of screenshots of what was cut out of different censored episodes (it was my favorite section). Seeing 2nd form Freeza with blood dripping down his face from an impaled Krillin was crazy to me back then.

I think they stopped updating around the time the Bojack movie came out, though I don't remember exactly. The site as a whole doesn't even seem to exist anymore, at least not that I've seen.

I remember this place, too!! I checked up on it recently and discovered that the site has pretty much been revamped completely, as so many old DBZ fansites have, to focus on Anime as a whole, and lost touch with all the DB material it once had.

I first discovered it around the end of '03/beginning of '04, I believe, because it was right before my interest in Dragonball began to wane. I remember it because finally I had found a treasure trove of DBZ music I did NOT yet have, which was extremely rare at the time...and got a bunch just before I started to lose interest and lean more and more towards other series'. That site was kinda my last great hurrah in my DBZ Fandom days.

I visited Lelola, Dragonbal Angels: The Goten Shrine (an old DBZ site by deviantART's very own risachanTAG), Old fansites by people who have made their own Dragonball OCs (including deviantART's famous Messa),UncannyDragonballZ (a website by another deviant, Agra19)

and of course I visited Good, ol Temple'O'Trunks.
