Dragon Small Z, my creation, trailer released
Remember when you watched DBZ back in the day? Where minutes of the episode were of powering up and character commentary? I decided to start a project to remove all of these scenes and still retain the quality. I called this project Dragon Small Z. I originally posted tests online in October 2006 intending to create the episodes and start releasing them around March 2007. But that never happened. The source for these episodes were low quality and had inconsistent voices. Not only that my video editing skills back then were sloppy, and I didn't put much effort into it.
In September 2008 I picked up the project again. This time around I made it so the episodes had better flow, and that the sound won't jump because I adjust the volume in between scenes. The music will mainly be Funimation's because that is how most of us remember it, but at different parts in the episode it may switch to the Japanese music to make it less jumpy. The source for these are the Funimation remastered DVDs since it has everything I wanted except for the cropped wide screen, but it isn't too bad.
These DSZ episodes will be around 20 minutes long, just like an episode of DBZ. To give you an idea of how much is cut out, the first episode of DBZ was cut down to 48 seconds, and the second episode was cut down to 2 minutes and 23 seconds. What I'll do then is combine these cut down episodes until they are 20 minutes total. Filler episodes won't be included with the DSZ episodes, but they'll be shortened for a compilation later. I'll be releasing the DSZ episodes in three main arcs: Freeza, Cell, and Buu. I will hopefully release one episode every week until the end of an arc, and then I will releases filler compilations and the such. That is if everything goes right. The Dragon Small Z trailer will be released soon.
Summary: DBZ without all that gunk.
Wait until the trailer loads fully.

You should check out the Japanese Music tracks in 5.1 Surround Sound. From what I understand, most of the vocal tracks are on different channels (apparently there is a little overlapping, but less than the other audio channels). You could rip that audio, then use the Bruce Faulkner soundtracks for BGM. You could even combine Bruce's and the Japanese music to please all camps and help break the repetitiveness of the US music.
To tell you the truth, I have had this same idea in the past, just never enough dedication to go through with it. The music thing was one of the ideas I had.

I wonder how long this series will end up being....
It would be interesting to find out.

I'm glad someone's finally doing it. I'm going to guess that each saga will be something like 12 episodes. An episode per week will be great: it'll be like watching a current anime, but things will actually happen! I'm looking forward to rewatching the series without having to invest a year's worth of viewing time on it.
This will probably get moved to the "Fan Works" section very soon, so check there when this thread goes missing. Good luck on DSZ!

The demastered sets are almost finished being released. We only have two left. He has more than enough time.darkhawk5 wrote:Nice work, this is something i really look forward to.
You mentioned your source of footage will be the "remastered" DVD's, as far as i know these haven't all been released yet, do you think you'll catch up to Funimation's release?
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
This is true. Cutting it down to the bare bones, trying to keep only scenes that are in the manga, would probably be the best bet. But that would require going through the whole manga at the same time, which could be more work.mAcChaos wrote:Sometimes you need the commentary though... it's only bad after the time that it's necessary. But if someone just appeared for the first time or something... it makes no sense without it.

Great idea, though shouldn't this be in the fanworks section?
From the sound of it, you'll be using the English dub, so I probably won't be as interested in it personally, but it's a great idea that will make the Anime match more closely to the Manga without being chock-full of filler material that we could really do without. Best of luck to you with this project.

This has definitely been something people have talked about doing for years upon years upon years. It will be great to see someone buckle down and attempt it.
I really liked the opening riff to "Rock the Dragon" being used as almost-comedy for the scene selections like the can being knocked over (I was really hoping for the crab falling down like in the first "DBZ Abridged" episode
). However, it became apparent as it continued that it wasn't JUST intentional comedy, and the project was going with FUNimation-dub-material for the entirety.
I think that's a place where the project would lose its focus and purpose. If one of the goals is to be more in line with the original manga, using such a loose reversioning as the basis for the project really doesn't accomplish much.

The funny thing is I was going to use it, but all the slots were taken up for where I could put it. Maybe it'll be in another trailer.VegettoEX wrote:(I was really hoping for the crab falling down like in the first "DBZ Abridged" episode).
The only thing I use the manga for is whether or not something that seems important out, because I don't want to lose the original meaning. But when I end up cutting the episodes they end up like their manga counterpart, and I haven't even read the manga yet. The goal I have is to cut out everything that is unneeded and it is almost a coincidence that it ends up so similar to the manga. I do leave some things that aren't in the manga though, and I also cut out some things that were.VegettoEX wrote: I think that's a place where the project would lose its focus and purpose. If you're using the Funimation dub good luck. The music is nonstop meaning the soundtrack will be bouncing around everywhere if you're cutting moments out causing for some very awkward listening. Hell the music would even pose an issue if you were working with the original version.
I love the concept but it's going to be hard to do.
