Memorable experiences with DB games?

Post by B » Fri Dec 26, 2008 6:04 pm

Anything in a Dragon Ball game ever struck you as odd, fun, or simply amusing?

I owned Ultimate Battle 22(or whatever it's called) for awhile and remembered finding the game just strange overall, as I was not aware of the Japanese vocie cast at that time, and thought they wre high-pitched growls. I remember always choosing Majin Buu or Kid Trunks and just spamming the hell out of ki blasts at my opponents, as they never ran out, IIRC. There was even a time in the tournament mode where I sucked so hard, I lost in the second round, and had to watch the computer fight itself the rest of the tournament.

And of course, all the different Budokai games and their loading screen mini-games. Some were fun, Like Yamcha's Spirit Ball in BT2, and some not so fun, like the Saibamen one(I forget which game[Probably Budokai 3], but god did I hate it. This one never loaded, and the screen was pouring with Saibamen before it got to a cutscene).

Budokai 3's overworld was really fun, and I would just circle the planet about 9 or 10 times before getting to the objective. I probably went to every location I could BEFORE I got to my mission. And searching for Dragon Balls is fun. :3

Budokai Tenkaichi 2 was always fun to me. Beating Meta Cooler over and over and over and over again was fun, and I remember cursing the game for it's repeptivness.

Legendary Super Warriors is so much fun to me. I have put in more than 100 hours into that game on my current save, and I hated losing to Reccome so many times because the stupid card I needed was never there...

Good Times.

I remember getting the GBA game based off of the Dragonball CCG for free. Target said it registered as a penny on their computer so they pretty much asked me just to take it off their hands.

I recall beating Budokai 1 without charging up. It made the game tough...really tough. I didn't even dodge until the SSJ Goku VS. Freeza fight.

I remember being on pins and needles waiting for Budokai Tenkaichi thanks to a screenshot where Nappa was chasing after Choutzu in a mountainous region, after the announcement that all of the Ginyu Force would be in the game I was even more ecstatic...too bad that thrill wore off after about an hour or two in.

Recently I bought Super Butoden 1-3 and found out I had more luck beating Super Butoden 1 on a keyboard then with an actual controller, which was a very weird discovery.

I have a thousand of these, I may check back later and list some more.

I remember the first time I played "Dragonball Z: Legends" (Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu) on my friend's PS1 because he knew the disc swap trick. For a long time, I played that on the PS1 or with a PS1 emulator on a computer. When I was playing it, I felt that, "This truly represents Dragonball Z as a game."

That was probably a couple years before the first Budokai game even came out.

I also remember Supersonic Warriors for GBA very fondly because it felt similar to DBZ Legends.

EDIT: Also, I've always had fun with Super Dragonball Z. It was very refreshing during the Budokai/Sparking days to get something where almost every fighter was unique, the action was always fast-paced, and it was tailored to fans of traditional fighters and the manga, of which I'm a fan of both.

After playing the demo, I'm definitely looking to import Dragonball DS sometime next month when I have the money and I'm really looking forward to importing Dragonball Z Story.

My DS battery charge has died in the exact same spot on Dragon Ball: Origins the past two times I've tried to begin the game.

I game up trying to get into it after I got Chrono Trigger, though.

The easiest way to play Final Bout is to flip the PlayStation controller face down and smack it.

That was sheer exaggeration.

I remember thinking Final Bout was the greatest game ever and seeing GT characters, having knowledge on them before any of your friends for a good long time, felt great. UB22 was my first Japanese import too and I distinctly remember saying "what's with the sound effects"?

Some of mine are:

Playing UB22 and being confused at the Japanese voice cast (at that time oinly had exposure to FUNI's dubs) and laughing at Ginyu's voice.
And then actually playing the game was boring by myself, but fun with friends.

Working hard on BT3 having unlocked almost everything and having almost every single Dragon ball, and at that point losing my save and every other save I've ever had and my memory card going to waste, all of a sudden all my data had been corrupted. ):

Budokai 1 being in Japanese made me want to watch the whole series in Japanese, and I became an even greater fan of the series.

For me, Budokai 3 and Legacy of Goku 2 are the most memorable games for me. I still play Budokai 3 anytime I play my three fighter games: Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken 3, and Budokai 3. I have spent countless hours playing the computer and my friends. I'm usually Bardock, #16, Teen Gohan, or Vegeta. Sometimes I bust out my crazy Goku with Kaioken as his only transformation. :P
For Legacy of Goku two, I haven't played it in a year, but I still remember playing religiously through middle school. Then I traded a friend in high school for Buu's Fury. Not a bad deal for me either, I still play that game. I actually picked that up today as I listened to Pompeii.
But I'll probably order that game now with that huge Amazon gift card/paper thing I got for Christmas.
Yeah, those Games I remember the best!

Budokai 3. Just as a whole.
Every day coming home from high school, and playing a few rounds of Budokai with my PLP (Woo, FoG references!). It's the thing that we played daily, always trying to figure out new things, one up the other, though we always stayed pretty close on terms of skill. It's just one of those games that comes along very rarely that we just fell in love with.
..High school.. it was a simple time.

I had a ton of fun with the original Budokai. Before that point, there weren't many good Dragon Ball Z fighting games that I knew about, and I was in that phase where pretty much anything Dragon Ball-related excited my eleven-year-old mind to massive extents. I played through the game and I though it was really cool that it had all of the moves from the show for each character--they weren't even hard to use!

The story mode was also really cool, because for a bit it makes you feel like you can change the course of the story by either winning or losing. Too bad it didn't really do that, though. :(

But yeah, Budokai and its sequels are the only DBZ games I physically played. I messed with a couple of the NES and SNES games via emulation before, but not for any extended period of time.

Budokai 1's Mini-cell story  even after 2 + 3 came out I would still pop in 1 just play that story over and over over. I loved it. It was both awesome and hilarious.

Did you ever catch the weird Yamcha fart?

Playing Legacy of Goku, resenting it afterwards.

That and playing the shit out of a rental of Budokai 3 the month it came out. I logged a good 120 hours in just a month of having it, and went way over the return date. Worthwhile fine. Twas' right before Blockbuster ousted late fees.

Oh yeah, Legacy of Goku II. Impossible to level up Hercule to 45 so I can break into ZTV. He doesn't level up, no matter what you kill.

I actually did that. >_> Took forever and I'm not sure it was worth the effort.

I did that too. It didn't seem so hard. You just use his stun attack to easily beat enemies.

I think you had to get to level 50 actually, you get Mr. Satan at level 43.
Yeah, getting him to level up wasn't hard, but it was a trial of patience. I usually lost patience...

I just went to that one island and beat up alligators. That seemed to work fine.
