The Nickies are a sports team in the Dragon Ball franchise, playing Battle Ball for Nicky Town. They were created as part of an anime-only sequence scripted by Katsuyuki Sumisawa and Hiroshi Toda for episodes 144 and 145 of Dragon Ball Z.
General Overview
The Nickies are a Battle Ball team from Nicky Town. During Age 767, the team was ambushed by Imperfect Cell while traveling on their team bus between Ginger Town and Nicky Town. Two players are killed quickly while the rest are able to enter Battle Formation. Even so, they are easily defeated and absorbed by Cell.[1] The players were likely revived by the dragon balls later in the year.[2]
The Nickies are seen to sport blue uniforms, except for the team leader who wears red. Two team members sport a letter "N" on their masks which may be a logo for the team. On their team bus, the Nickies name is exclusively spelled in katakana.
Name
The name of the team, ニッキーズ (Nikkīzu), is a variation of ニッキー (Nikkī), the name of their home town, adapted with an ending to mimic an English-style plural. The town name itself is based on an alternate spelling of cinnamon (にっき), rendered as katakana.
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball Z interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. The Nickies were written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa and Hiroshi Toda to elaborate on Cell's escape from Piccolo in Dragon Ball Chapter 364.
