Yeah the Gohan thing is pretty clear IMO, Toriyama did fully 100% transition him into MC by the end of Cell/beginning of Buu. Hence Toei followed with new opening and promo material. The fact that then Tori made a 180 u-turn is a different thing (and the biggest mistake DB did IMO )
