Re: Dragonball Evolution - Looking Back

I had seen some bits of it online before release, but not the whole thing until shortly afterward and needless to say i was shocked by how awful it ended up being. Much like the ill fated Avatar- The Last Airbender live action movie which came out around a year later, it just felt like a misguided a...

Re: What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?

Nice, i had considered getting this one but eventually found both of the old FUNi single versions for decent prices though i'll likely still snag it at some point when i have the chance. I was able to get the Trunks single but the single for Bardock has gotten pretty high so I decided to just get t...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

FUNimation made no mention of that in their initial press release for them, though. Actually, their initial press release also mentioned that they had gotten the Dragon Box masters for the (DBZ) movies as well, and those still remain unreleased. Not sure what happened there...but then again it does...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

-The fact that FUNimation's Dragon Boxes for DBZ were only described as a limited-run DVD series after the fact. Was it really? That was my understanding going in - it was a limited release. FUNimation made no mention of that in their initial press release for them, though. Actually, their initial ...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

The ViZ scene of Koan/Catzi’s mental breakdown was miles better than the DiC version but the DiC version had an inappropriate music choice and gave the character a chainsmoker voice (ala Funimation circa 1999) which killed most of the emotion with again Sailor Mars voice actor having to carry any a...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Never saw all of Super S, but heard guys say she got better over the course as she stopped trying to imitate Terri Hawkes. Will say Linda Ballantyne was nice when I met her, and she gave me a hug. Though speaking of her doing roles done by other actors somewhat, was at a panel where she and Susan R...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

And the music changes outside the songs that most folks liked even if they didn't like the dub, could be hit or miss at times. The DiC music while not nearly as good as the Japanese score still held its own pretty well and was usually used effectively (so you know the opposite of pretty much any re...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

The "remastered" DBZ dub does its job, in terms of fixing major inconsistencies like actors changing mid-run, right? Yes but it doesn’t account too much for how different the 2005 performances were from the 1999-2000 recordings so other than a few select redubs you still have Goku suddenly sounding...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

It's not like the old dub is going anywhere, there's now hundreds of reprints of the old dub on DVDs and streaming sites so old fans still have that version if they want. but that dub isnt even sold anymore, just the newer partial redub+jacked up sound effects "Remaster" dub. Any nostalgia they cou...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

Their main target audience unfortunately not only loves the dub, but also believes it to be superior to Kai. This is why Super's dub for example has some of the changes they made early on with Z, they're catering to that old Toonami fan base that wouldn't know what a quality dub was if their lives ...

Re: I still don't get why FUNI never redubbed DBZ from start to finish

Money. People (as in Joe Schmoe who grew up with the show on Toonami in the late 90s/early 2000s) like the dub, the Orange Bricks despite a shitty remastering and a half ass redub for season 3 still sold extremely well. Why put in the time and money to re-do something that’s already a big seller? I...

Normally I'd agree, but this is FUNimation  so while I wouldnt be suprised if they tinkered with it again, also wouldnt be suprised if they didnt If they messed with it again I'd expect the'd have a video out withere with Chris Sabat in his deep trailer voice like, "We messed with it again and...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 39 - DBZ episode 18-22 (CURRENT WEEK)

With Kaio we get Goku’s fifth and final martial arts teacher and the one that manages to stay the most relevant after. Using the same voice as the narrator is a nice touch and suggest Kaio was the narrator all along. Ocean would pull a Freeza and give him a voice that matches the design but not the...

Re: I feel like the slow pacing for DBZ in the anime and filler works to its advantage

Still though, that's my other main reason for going with Kai on most viewings of the series aside from the FUNi dub being the preferred way for me to watch the show in English here given just how absolutely horrible and unwatchable the old DBZ dub was. I still stick with the latter for Japanese vie...

Re: I feel like the slow pacing for DBZ in the anime and filler works to its advantage

I think the sloppy editing of Kai had more to do with the lack of air, so to speak. Like MasenkoHa mentioned, they breezed through the non-action scenes far too quickly while the fights feel appropriately cut - they left in just enough non-manga material in the fights to take advantage of the mediu...

Re: I feel like the slow pacing for DBZ in the anime and filler works to its advantage

I do like that Kai cut out a good chunk of the purely filler scenes and episodes that were made back during Z's initial broadcast run, which was done almost solely in order to stall behind the manga's then concurrent serialization a la Princess Snake and the Garlic Jr. arc which i've never cared muc...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 39 - DBZ episode 18-22 (CURRENT WEEK)

The explanation is Saiyan children’s tails can grow back (or at least they used to) Goku’s tail grew back twice as a kid until God removed it for good. So I’m glad Toei attempted to be consistent with this and had Gohan’s tail grow back a few times Interesting, i had figured that it was kind of odd...
