Re: Everything Dragon Ball Super Did Right!

https://media3.giphy.com/media/HyDAt79JnlY4M/giphy.gif Goku Black was a pretty cool guy, while the idea of "Gohan Black" is also quite appealing considering his rivalry with Future Trunks, it still works just as well that Trunks is being forced to fight a villain with the face of his personal idol,...

Re: Westerners love to claim Asian characters.

[*]I think if you're going to bring up "westerners" "claiming" Goku as white (?), you can't / shouldn't stop here. The black community has widely adopted Piccolo, and I think that's actually/probably the more interesting and specific angle. There's been a fair bit written on this, and I want to rea...

Re: Everything Wrong with Dragon Ball Super

Seeing obvious bait threads with unoriginal non-arguments like this crop up every week really is a bummer. Co-signed. What's even more dispiriting is the regularity with which these bad-faith non-arguments (the OP, for instance, appears to have been made with the back-door intention of bigging up t...

Re: Everything Wrong with Dragon Ball Super

Super has served its purpose in providing an enormous amount of context for what happens in between the Buu arc and the manga's distant finale. But the question is: did we and the franchise really need that "enormous amount of context"? Couldn't just be Tarble OVA and Movie 14 and then move on? Tho...

Re: Everything Wrong with Dragon Ball Super

Narrative tension isn't always about not knowing the outcome, it's simply a matter being suspended in the story world effectively enough to care about what happens on some level, hence how you can still feel tension even after watching a show many times. I can feel a huge sense of tension and stakes...

Re: Is [SPOILER] Really Dead/Gone???

I find Merus's resurrection a little iffy but I won't lie, his reunion with Goku was really sweet. I think Goku and Merus definitely needed more time together to fully entrench their friendship but it's still well conveyed in the scenes they do share. Part of the escapist wonder of Dragon Ball is th...

Re: The new Dragon Ball room for 2021

I'd say I'm in agreement with ABED here. Dragon Ball has never been a series about lasting consequences for the characters and setting (I mean, there's like ten different hassle free methods to resurrect the dead now) so I don't get why there's a sudden expectation for them. No shade on your ideas R...

Re: What if the God Hierarchy would look like this?

Akira Toriyama's gas mask avatar may be the ultimate force, but he's just a creator avatar, he has no real place in the story beyond the occasional comic relief cameo. That's a thought, though - you could have 'Tori-Sama' as a God trying to write new things into existence, and 'Tori-Shin' (-shima) ...

Re: What if the God Hierarchy would look like this?

Not gonna lie, I'd be down for this idea and I've long thought that there must be a level above Zeno. Maybe Zeno's "father" or superior is just out of the picture for whatever reason, same as Zalama. As others have reasoned, Zeno is a child -- in the words of John Backderf, where are the damn adults...

Re: What would be the breaking point Super would do that would make you feel like it jumped the shark?

It encapsulates every negative stereotype normies associate with Dragon Ball: two beefy screaming guys changing their hair/skin colours and punching and firing blasts at each other repeatedly until one falls down Can't you say exactly the same thing about Broly movie? With even more fanservice by i...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

Freeza has never been one-dimensional anyway. Yeah, he's always pure evil, but he represents a specific brand of evil that's extremely relevant. He's the racist, condescending, untouchable upper class to our backwater monkey heroes. There's always been a bit of a corporate edge to him as well -- aft...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

Jiren is the classic case of "Concept > Execution". Conceptually he is far more original than any antagonist from old DB, serving as a foil for Goku and having actual potential in the future storyline, but his execution is bad and his backstory is a joke. Regardless he is proof that Toriyama has ev...

Hmm... Great video as always, but I'll be frank, I haven't disagreed with a Gaffer-Take more than the whole "Goku and pals refuse to take proactive measures against the Android threat" debacle. I think Goku and Vegeta's conflict is pretty fantastic even if it isn't focused on too long in the m...

Doesn't he also reuse the designs of those generic Tech-Tech aliens in like 80% of his modern works? You could do a few six-degrees based off that alone.

Re: What would be the breaking point Super would do that would make you feel like it jumped the shark?

"Jumping the Shark" doesn't solely mean the creators ran out of ideas, hell, you could argue that Toriyama did that long before GT or Super were glimmers in his gas mask eye, it's just a matter of keeping the regurgitated ideas fresh and entertaining enough to keep the audience engaged. I mean, over...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

Nah, that would be a colossal shark-jumping moment of enormous proportions and would totally undermine Bulma's entire character. Her whole appeal is that she's the one 100% normie in this group of superpowered martial artist weirdos, yet her intellect and resourcefulness allow her to contribute in ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread

I would unironically like it if it turned out Bulma was a descendant of a Tsufurian who went on a trip to Earth. It wouldn’t even be that dumb because everyone always got amazed by the technology of Earth, which comes all from Bulma’s family. In the space nobody ever had a clue Earth got such techn...

Re: The Super Re-Read

I think it's okay to refer to Ultra Instinct as a transformation in the literal sense that it physically alters Goku's body and appearance, so long as 'technique' and 'state of mind' are the imperative descriptors. I'd echo Toby's point that it can be seen as a transformation to contain a technique....
