Harmony Gold Dub Cancelation

It is known that the Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball was cancelled due to low ratings, but was this actually the case?

Given how TV worked at the time, it seems odd that only five episodes were dubbed and aired, in very small markets, for just one week, especially when the standard was to produce ...

Re: Would Dragon Ball be successful in English-speaking countries if the old English dubs weren't Americanized?

Let's say that instead of FUNimation, another company got the rights to Dragon Ball in North America and other English-speaking countries and did faithful English dubs of the classic 1986-1997 DB anime run. Would Dragon Ball be massively successful in America and other English-speaking countries ...

Re: How Good were the old Ocean Cast?

It's a solid dub, despite some miscast, repetition, and the scriptwork

Re: Would FUNimation even have survived were it not for Dragon Ball?

What other things Funimation had then?

I-Man? I don't think that one was even made

Cyboars? Only one episode was made, with apparently two more recorded (One at Ocean, and one in Dallas)

I don't think they would have even survived without Dragon Ball

Re: What if simulcast of classic anime series (original, Z, and GT) existed back then?

I don't recall there being any voice acting scene in Texas before Funimation, if there was it was incredibly niche. Funimation very much made their mark in that state once they went in-house.

There was at least some VA work done in Texas during those days, at least Dallas had stuff from DNA ...

Canonically Goku, Raditz, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, Piccolo,Kami, Nappa, Cui, Dodoria, Zarbon, Random Frieza minion#43, and Guldo all died in the Ocean dub it was just the next dimension phrasing was used.

Reecome also died too (As far as I can remember)

Although, I was referring to when ...

Re: Could foreign dub casts be a thing of the past?

As a Voice Actor, and based on my personal experience, I don't think so, we have not reached the point to where it would even sound decent.

I participated in a Project that was initially gonna be made using AI technology to replicate the voice of the original actors, all while we were going to do ...

Re: Deep Thoughts: The Namek Saga (Ocean Dub)

Like I said "next dimension" isn't that bad and it was still clear Goku and everyone else who "went to the next dimension" was killed. Otherworld just would have been a way better workaround.

Canonically, Goku and Raditz did die in the Ocean Dub, XD

Canonically Goku, Raditz, Yamcha, Tien ...

Re: Deep Thoughts: The Namek Saga (Ocean Dub)

[

Of course, this doesn't explain the replacement score or made-up lines about Goku's father being a brilliant scientist and whatnot--it just paints a picture of why things were so sanitized. Also, to be fair, if the characters believed in spirituality and souls passing through (which they ...

Re: Deep Thoughts: The Saiyan Conflict (Ocean Dub)

The intro to DBZ episode 1 takes footage from the oddest of sources, mostly movies 1 and 2. It's designed to show Goku going from kid to adult and say "the next generation has arrived." I wonder what the thought process was there.

That clip comes from a Dragon Ball Z Test dub produced with the ...

Funny, during Kamehacon 2022, I was telling somebody that it would be crazy if they somehow invited Barry Watson

It would ...

Re: So I rewatched the Pioneer Ocean movie trilogy

I'm guessing that despite Pioneer having production rights, Funimation still directed the cast and wrote the script, which is amazing seeing as they haven't been as faithful to the original before or after these movies.

All due respect to Funimation but Ocean have always had better writers ...

Re: so uhh Sony threw away funimations dragon ball film

Didn't Funi apparently sell off or give away the film copies of OG DB they had at some point in the last decade or so? Seeing as how eps 1-28 had a different source on the season sets compared to 29 onward which more or less just used the tape transfers (albeit with noise reduction/zooming) that ...

Sooo how screwed up was the dialogue in the Harmony Gold dub lol

Ooh! Also I watched the opening to it, it's neat how they used some footage from the second opening before toei lost it

Did Alistair say if he was still Trunks or not?

You're correct, it was hey Vancouver/Calgary-based coproduction. And yeah, I'm not surprised by some of that lack of clarity. Not just from the fact that it was already so long ago, but to be honest, a lot of the Vancouver actors have inconsistently ...

Amazing! So happy to have it confirmed that Saffron Henderson did return for Gohan, she is amazing in the role. Thank you AlexSketchy04! I have a feeling Terry K was not in Ocean Kai at all but I'm sure he'll have knowledge on at least some of the details.

Yeah, Terry either does not ...

Ok, i just came back from Kamehacon, it was fun, and i got some interesting info.

Saffron Henderon told me that she did Gohan in the Ocean Dub of Kai.

Brian Dobson did not play Dr Gero, but he did participate in it in Minor Roles.

Alistair Bell however, mentioned something interesting, he ...
