Goku got worn out, and used up a good amount of his ki, but he wasn't even really injured , so to say. I agree that by this point in the series, zenkai didn't play as much into power boosts as they used to.

Don't bet on that. That's about how badly Goku was injured when he got that unholy power ...

Or the final two sets could be the DBZ movies and TV specials.

That's not really what you would consider "remastering," which would involve cleaning up footage. That's just the difference between a TV broadcast and a DVD transfer, which is higher quality than the (likely) analog TV broadcast of a digital show.
