Sub elitism is every bit as toxic as the dub equivalent and should be treated with the same scrutiny

As I feel the war over how myself and Adamant each come across derailed TechExpert2021 's thread I thought that issue needed a separate topic for those who wish to continue discussing it or have anything new to bring to the table. Again I'll point you towards the main points I was making. Hope peopl...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I've defended the English dubs on here many times in the past, but these days I try to avoid getting involved in those debates. This is mostly because the debates are an uphill battle that lead nowhere. We all have our preferences, and having the exact same arguments over and over won't change them...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Now, I honestly think that quoting what Adamant said twelve years ago wasn't a good way to address sub elitism. Honestly, I agree with you and in retrospect I kinda feel bad for showing him up, as I take it Adamant regrets what he said back then and no longer stands by it. Sure, the way he worded h...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Like how I unashamedly adore the Westwood dub, which is even less faithful than Toonzai/Vortexx Kai as it has less accurate scripts, replacement music, added SFX, an original OP and ED, better actors but with rushed direction. It was what aired in Ireland for the vast majority of the show, but despi...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Also within the genre of fantasy another example might be Game of Thrones. Someone who has read George R.R Martin's books may tell someone who hasn't read them and has only seen the HBO show that adapts them "you are not a Song of Ice and Fire fan". Just because it's true it doesn't give t...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I know no one has said you can't enjoy both a dub and the Japanese version, but my point still stands Adamant was making Statement B, not Statement A. It's not a battle I invented, I've been calling him out for making a judgement call on others. For the record here's s clear example of Statement B, ...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Adamant , I understood what you were saying perfectly fine. I was pointing out there is a difference between how you and I come across when we're stating two things are different. I'll say it again, which is the actual point people have been consistently ignoring: Statement A : "Funimation's d...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

And just like the Super Sentai/Power Rangers example from before, this hypothetical person does not exist. Nobody who only likes Robotech and has no interest in Macross is going to call themselves a Macross fan, they'll tell you they're a Robotech fan because the show they enjoy isn't called Macros...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I'm not inclined to disagree that if FUNimation had given their dub a different name from Dragon Ball (ala Robotech, or Card Captors or whatever) fans of that version would just call it that instead of Dragon Ball . I think that's a pretty undisputable argument to agree with, and I don't see any re...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

That had nothing to do with the conversation on hand until it got weirdly brought up here? Seriously 12 years ago. Even if Adamant still holds that opinion (and to be clear I disagree with him on his opinion from 12 years ago) it's still irrelevant to what the conversation was about. I admit it may...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I'm sorry, but the fruit analogy was perfect. Nope, it disregards my point entirely, as has been the case for most people who have responded to me, or at best they only took half my point into consideration . Although maybe your trying to be ironic because unlike a Tomato there is no debate over wh...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I sure do hate when those snobby fruit elitist tell me the carrot I'm eating is a vegetable. I'm going to assume this is a joke, but assuming it's the kind of humour that has an element of truth to it - Again this is missing the point entirely. I'll say it again making a statement of fact is not th...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I don't have a problem reading subtitles, although I don't blame people who are not entirely comfortable with it and there are people with visual impairments who do genuinely struggle with it whom we should empatize with. There is thusly another good argument to be made for dubs as an accessibility ...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

To be fair to Kanzenshuu, the forum has SIGNIFICANTLY softened up to dubs and even Funimation dubs, the only hate is rightfully towards FuniCrunchyroll's awful home releases. It has, and I am grateful for that. I believe that has been thanks to the activity of yourself, 90sDBZ , other Ocean dub fan...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Again stating the fact that something is different is not the same thing as deciding on someone's behalf whether or not they are a fan. In my discussions with Dragon Ball fans over the years I've said the former, but not the latter with my example of Funimation's dub of GT, Adamant has said both in ...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I get that you don't like the argument he's making because it edges too close to "dub fans aren't real fans" for you. I personally think you're low-key putting words in his mouth there. Yes I think its flirting too much with belittling dub fans, and because I don't trust Adamant to be res...

Re: Crunchyroll is re-releasing the Dragon Ball Super Complete Series steelbook set

Just wanted to let everyone know that Crunchyroll is re-releasing the Dragon Ball Super Complete Steelbook Set on July 31 so if you missed your chance to get it, here's another one. I already bought a new set from eBay last year (after selling my original to get a sealed copy), but I think I'll dou...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

When it comes to the anime adaptation, the Japanese version is the source material. That's just a fact. The dub you enjoy watching is using footage that has a point of origin and acknowledging that isn't elitism. Your still missing my point Adamant said if Funimation renamed Dragon Ball would dub f...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

Because sub elitism and dub elitism are equally toxic and harmful to the anime community, but the former often gets a free pass here because said fans are fans of the original version of the anime. Neither is ideal though, I hate seeing some dub fans say "I can't stand Goku sounding like a gran...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

In fact I don't think we should deem anyone unworthy of respect whatsoever He didn't say "they like a heavily altered version of the show so they don't deserve respect" though. The argument is that those fans are simply fans of Funimation's version of the show. If they don't like the sour...
