Question for purists about movie titles

Post by MarCas92 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 2:46 am

Does anyone actually prefer the English titles? I'm just talking about the 13 Z movies, since (apart from the 1st one) the Dragon Ball movie titles are almost the same.

For the most part, I usually just say the movie number (Movie 12 for example), but a lot of the time I just end up using the English titles.

The most obvious problem in my opinion is that a lot of the Japanese titles are interchangeable. The Movie 3,5,8,9 and 11 (arguably 2) could be switched around and no one would be the wiser. Second, it's just easier to type out the English titles.

Movie 1: Dead Zone--> Return my Gohan!!
Movie 2: The World's Strongest--> The World's Strongest Guy
Movie 3: The Tree of Might--> A Super Decisive Battle for Earth
Movie 4: Lord Slug--> Super Saiyan Son Goku
Movie 5: Cooler's Revenge--> The Incredible Strongest vs Strongest
Movie 6: The Return of Cooler-->Clash!! 10,000,000,000 Powerful Warriors
Movie 7: Super Android 13--> Extreme Battle!! The 3 Great Super Saiyans
Movie 8: Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan--> Burn Up!! A Red, Hot, Raging, Super Fierce Fight
Movie 9: Bojack Unbound--> The Galaxy at the Brink!! The Super Incredible Guy
Movie 10: Broly:Second Coming--> The Dangerous Duo! Super-Warriors Can't Rest
Movie 11: Bio-Broly-->Super-Warrior Defeat!! I’m the One Who’ll Win
Movie 12: Fusion Reborn--> The Rebirth of Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta
Movie 13: Wrath of the Dragon-->Dragon Fist Explosion!! If Goku Won’t Do it, Who Will?

FUN FACT: For some reason only movie 11 gets one exclamation point. Maybe they knew it was the least exciting :P

I don't care for either really. I think Wrath of the Dragon misses the point entirely, when the Japanese title is a reference to the move (which is renamed stupidly in the dub).

When I discuss the movies, I just refer to them by their number.

Agreed on the numbers thing. That's the only way I've ever referred to any of them, including before the vast majority of them even had English titles in the first place.

I guess the only one we all pretty much win on is DBZ Movie 12, which just gets a shortened version of its Japanese title in English.

What about Movie 2? That's just a very slight shortening of its original title!

Ack, you're right! I don't know why, but I kinda forget about the first three DBZ movies with regard to English titles.

For that matter, I guess DB movies 2, 3, and the 10th anniversary movie also got accurate title translations!

I've never seen Movie 8, but on the subject of interchangeable titles, could you really call it "Super Decisive Battle for Earth"? Doesn't it take place on some other planet inhabited by those little guys?

Paragus was going to conquer Earth anyway, so I would think so.

I've always found the titles of the movies to be really weird. Usually I just refer to the movie by its villain.

Yeah, Paragus admitted he wanted Earth for his own from what I remember. That's probably one of the reasons he drew them away from the planet in the first place (besides trying to trap them with the comet), was so that there wasn't really a chance for Earth to take damage if a battle broke out.

Isn't that Movie 3's title and not Movie 8's?

I can't refer to them by number, as I don't know which is which that way. I use the English titles.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Wrath of the Dragon sounds like a Bruce Lee film, which is a good thing in my book.

I usually refer to the Movies by number as well. Though, in casual conversation, I do sometimes use the English names so that we all know which movie we're talking about.

FUNimation's old labeling of what was a "movie" or a "feature" is still confusing for plenty of people though. I'm still correcting people who think the Bardock and Trunks specials were part of the original movies.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I and most peruvian fandom refer to the movies by their villian. As in "the first Broly movie" or "the Lord Slug movie"; the exception being 13th, that is usually called "the Tapion movie".

I do use the FUNi english dub titles for the movies only because referring to the movie by number doesn't come to me as quick as referring to it by the FUNi dub title.

I never cared about the titles and always used the numbers, like we do for episodes.
Some japanese titles are too flashy in typical Toei style, while most of the english titles are pretty lazy, though. I mean, half of them are pretty much only the name of the villain.

Cooler's Revenge followed by The Return of Cooler makes it sound like movie 6 is the revenge's revenge. :lol:
