Episode #0060! VegettoEX, Meri, Jeff, and Andrew discuss old gaming magazines. Why old gaming magazines? Back when anime was still niche, gaming magazines were filled with full-page spreads previewing import games, and so much more! What happened to their coverage of import games? Accompanying images showcase DBZ's coverage beginning all the way back in 1988 in the very first Nintendo Power! Referenced sites: Whee! Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the asinine *sixty* episodes, now.

When Julian's not available for recording, things get crazy. When things get crazy, the floor gets messy. Anyway, here's some more history for everyone, including a disgusting amount of images to check out.

w0rd.

Listening right now. I see the image of the magazines on the floor, it pwns. I have so many of those EGM issues. In fact, I still read the one that goes over the Top 100 games of all time (Too many games!)

One of the two guests made a comment that perhaps EGM had so much import coverage because of their California location. While I'm quite sure that they're located there now, I'm also relatively certain that until just a few years ago they were stationed in Chicago. Something else is afoot!

That is true, I remember back when they moved.

Anyways, I remember those old Game Cave ads! It's actually where I had gotten my copy of DBZ: Legends for PS1 in those good ol' days.

So, who wants to play a game of Super Futoden? :P

I used to remember reading these egms as a kid and not knowing ANYTHING about this stuff. Good times! :)

Only if I can play as either Sell of Kaoshin.

My favorite character in the series is Kuririn's & 18 Gou's son!

Man, you've got some entertaining friends, EX . Again, I'm not a big gamer, but I did enjoy this topic. I do agree that magazines in general are no longer needed because of the internet and all, but people still enjoy having something tangible and foldable and whatnot at their hands. Not everyone wants to have to rely on their computer for every little thing. I also agree that younger people, such as myself, enjoy getting stuff in the mail. It's just cool to get stuff in the mail, I guess.

I completely remember the older Toonami that had fanart and I was shocked when I heard Tom telling the viewers to not send in Trunks stuff. At the time, I only knew about DBZ from my friend, but that was enough for me to know that Trunks was a fan favorite. I used to send in envelope art to Beckett, but those punks never put up my stuff :x. Eh, whatever. It's Beckett...

Anyways, I already sent in my contest entry last week, and other than that, keep up the good work!

I loved this episode, it was awesome. I still have that EGM #61. I don't have Nintendo Power #1 but I remember it front to back (like a freak). There was also an article in that issue about Akira Toriyama's Dragon Quest series and how damn popular it was in Japan.

Now with those pre 1997 EGM's, I remember just rushing to the backs of those magazines just to see what new Super Battle Collection figures there were. I knew I could never order from them being I was 15, had no money and no credit card. I used to cut those pictures out like a crazy person and pin them on my corkboard. I eventually did get something from Tommo, my sister ordered it for me. It was one of those Rockman (Megaman) figures which I still have to this day...

A few years later I found everything that was in the back of those magazines in China Town which is like 10 minutes away from me by car (Brooklyn China town). After that, I never seen GameCave or Toma again... I felt like I some how killed them off :(

Little side note, Tomma is still in business but only deals in wholesale for companies, well so it seems... http://tommo.com/home/

Awesome, awesome podcast. Thanks :D

I used to live close to the actual Game Cave. VERY nice place that reminds you of an office building.

Sadly the place closed months later

Oh yeah, I remember the SBC images at the back of those issues. Good times. :)

Also, 18 Gou! Dabula! Kaoshin! This episode really makes me want to buy tons of back issues of EGM off of eBay.

WOW. Those import shop ads bring back so many memories...I'd look at the SBC figures and laugh about the name of the series ("Huh, huh...'Dragon Ballz'...huh, huh."). And I so remember the Game Cave ads in the back of Gamefan and just drooling at the DBZ games I could order when I actually started getting into the show.

One day I will have it; I will have nothing else, but I will have the robot-shaped DBZ game and the joy it will bring to me

It won't bring you as much joy as an anime blowup doll.
