Yeah, before he fought Vegeta. And they went fishing in that filler before Cell Games.
That's the ticket! I hope Hatano Morio or King Ryuu remember this scene and include a scene of the two fishing in Dragon Ball Super.

After episode 43, I really wanted more down to earth moments between the family members. I think this little arc on another planet could be interesting, but darn it seeing the characters actually sit down with each other for a while is incredibly satisfying to me and something I'd rather have until the upcoming arc. They even had an excuse for Goku to take it easy for a while! I'd love to get a Goku/Gohan fishing episode.

Everyone points to that line, but why is everyone assuming that Goku thinks that or that Piccolo knows what Gohan was thinking? And why does everyone miss Goku's line? He knows Gohan wants to be a scholar.
It was clear Piccolo's words had an effect on Goku though. It was like Goku was projecting himself into Gohan that he lost sight of who he was for a moment.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Just like the fandom!
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

That's not what I inferred from that scene. My impression was alway that Goku had temporary moment of doubt and worry that he made a mistake. It turns out he was correct, it just didn't happen quite the way he invisioned. Gohan has some experience, but he's still a child and doesn't have quite the grasp on his power that Goku thought he did. Goku shouldn't have trained himself in those few days before the Cell Games, he should've told Gohan his plan and helped him learn to control and draw out his power. The only explanation I have for him not doing so is Toriyama trying to give the scenes more tension and surprises.

Specifically in regards to Gohan, I think Goku views him as more of a sparring partner than a son.
I don't it's necessarily a sparring partner but more of of a objective sight like this is my son (my biological offspring).

It seems like Goku was a lot more caring and loving in the earlier arcs (Saiyan and Namek) to Gohan than he is in the later ones. The movies are a really good example. The first three ones are supposed to take place after or during the arcs I previously mentioned and they show Goku as really protective over Gohan. A good example of this is in Tree of Might when Goku states that he really wants to save Gohan and take care of him before saving the earth. He actually seems to be much more concerned with protecting Gohan in those three movies than any other piece of media we've seen the two in. It's in the later arcs after Namek that Goku seems more detached from his family. I've really disliked that about him since the Cell Arc. I don't know if Toriyama or Toei intentionally decided to portray him more fatherly in the movies but I really like it. It made me like Goku a bit more :)

Goku cares more about Krillin than his son at this point.

Him being detached from his family made goku more likable ?

Just let it sink in that Bardock treats his family, more like a family, than Goku. Just let that sink in.
To be honest I never bought that. Just because Toriyama doesn't mean we have to accept it
