The amazing Season 1 set discovery

Post by Castor Troy » Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:08 pm

A few months ago, SkitzZero discovered something very interesting on the newly released Season 1 set. First of all, we've already established everything about the video so it's not a discovery on the video (sorry, no hidden 4:3 or Dragonbox footage). However, there's something about the set that actually hasn't been discussed in great detail - The sound.

As you know, the new season sets have a 5.1 surround track meaning that there are 5 seperate sound channels for the music, sound effects, voices, etc...

SkitzZero was able to find a way to extract all of the tracks seperately which means...

- You can have the FUNi dub track alone without music.
- You can have the original japanese music without the voices

HOWEVER..

- The sound effects are embedded in the music tracks. :x

Sadly my dream of having a complete DBZ BGM collection was thrown out the window, but here's some other fun things you can do..

- You can insert whatever music you want in the FUNi dub track
- You can fandub episodes with the original japanese music and sound effects

Wanna make your own english or whatever language dub? Want to insert your favorite Linkin Park song during the Goku and Vegeta fight in the dub? Now you can!

So what programs are needed?

You need DVD audio extractor and if you like it enough, pay for the full version or get it somewhere else. You will also need smartripper, dvd decrypter, or any dvd ripping program that lets you have the dvd in vobs. You will also need a video/audio editing program like Adobe Premiere or so. I'm not at home right now, so I can't go over the specific details since it takes a little while to extract everything correctly.

So far I've only tested it on the first dvd and I'm not sure if the rest of the dvds will have the audio tracks seperate. Hopefully they will all follow the same format.

This is definitely a huge breakthrough for the voice acting and fandubbing community. Now fans have a way of fandubbing their favorite episodes of DBZ. :)

So bust out that Dragonbox footage, get our your microphones, and scream your favorite DBZ attacks to your heart's delight. So don't dismiss the Season sets if you're interested in making your own DBZ fandub.

If anyone else discovers something extra (like a seperate music track... :D ) Let us know!

Holy friggin' crap! The possibilities the Room 29 fandubbing could extend to, now that there's potentially a legit international track of the series we fans can access. Skitz has made a fantastic discovery, seriously, this opens the door for so many new things we of the DB community can do. The possibilities!! :D

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

That's too bad indeed. How musical does it sound with all the sound effects?

Oh! Looks like I'm gonna have to take out my Season One boxset again and really put it under the knife.

Because the discovery was made out to be super special. This isn't. In fact can't you do this to all DVD's?

This is the first DVD release of Dragonball to have the original audio split in any way - before this, the audio was all in one stream: voice, music, sound effects. Now, we have a separate voice track.

Oh, ok. But still those sound effects block out all the musical goodness. I guess it's cool for fandubbers. Just not myself. *vanishes into thin air*

SWEET SASSY F***ING MOLLASSY!

Wow. This is cool. I've been learning how to use various AMVing programs like DVD Decrypter and the like, so I'm sure I'd be able to work whatever programs are needed.

This is cool.

Not to be a dick, but technically wouldn't this be possible on any multichannel surround mix that doesn't have lots of use of directionality? Dialogue is typically relegated to the center channel, so the left surround and right surround would be BGM/SFX.

Still, yeah. You could rip the AC3 track and break it into channels, considering I don't think FUNi did anything spiffy like making sweeps across the channels or anything of that sort (it's a pretty uninspired, vanilla surround mix IMHO with some production issues in terms of balance). I think the resulting quality would still be worse than just using the CD releases of the BGM (though it's a way to get tracks that haven't been released, as noted).

You could actually do this with the Pioneer episodes, too.

So you're saying that it's technically possible on any 5.1 surround mix? Awesome. More fandub-goodiness =D
And all this time (5 secs) I had high hopes oh well. It would be interesting to hear what people do with this "discovery" though.

Well, yeah, 5.1 surround is sure to have different audio tracks.

I forgot about that though, so I might give it a go :)

I have a bit of a slight warning..

I tested out one of the discs with episode 35, specifically the part where Goku telepathically contacts Gohan to look at Vegeta's artificial moon...

The bad news is that Goku's telepathic echo message is embedded in the music track. :x

The good news is that it's on a part that isn't playing music.

Just a heads up since there's no telling what may be embedded in the BGM track on the other discs.

Ok, I'm running Parallels and I am ripping the first disk to one big VOB. Afterwords, I guess I will use that thing to extract audio.

I'll let you know how it goes.

By the way, if you know of any DVD audio ripping software for Mac, it would be appreciated.
