Would you watch a Dragonball show with no fighting or villains at all, just SOL?

Post by precita » Tue Dec 06, 2016 2:16 am

Would you watch a SOL (slice of life) Dragonball show with no villains and no fighting, (or very little fighting) that just focuses on the peacetime antics of the main cast? As seen back in Dragonball, Z, and now Super...we have many peacetime "filler" episodes inbetween the main villains appearance where everyone just carries out their normal lives.

Would you watch a Dragonball slice of life show, that each episodes focused on a different main character and their families or others throughout its run? One episode would be about Gohan and Pan, another about Tenshinhan on his farm, another about Krillin and Yamcha doing random stuff, etc.

I'd love an SoL series, Toei's proven that they can be done well, and they've demonstrated quite the opposite with their long-term narrative structure. I can't think of a better direction for Dragon Ball at the moment.

Would it be like Seinfeld where it's a show about nothing. I see it being refreshing, but getting boring really quickly. Personally, I wouldn't be too excited to see Goku going to the store or Vegeta going to the DMV.

Dr. Slump was largely SoL, and it works, although it isn't necessarily my cup of tea. If a Dr. Slump anime remake without much Toriyama involvement can work, surely an SoL Dragon Ball series with a decent amount of Toriyama could.

No.

I would, however, totally watch a DB show that was all Satellite of Love.

I don't know how long I'd stick with it, but I'd definitely give it a watch, sure. I find that I like the SOL episodes more as I get older. Actually, part of me thinks that, since Toriyama initially set out to write a gag humor manga, he might actually be more passionate about telling an SOL story than a fighting story.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

It depends. If there was absolutely no larger conflict besides the scenario of the week, it might get a little tiresome. While I like the Dragon Ball cast, I honestly don't think they're strong enough characters on their own to hold up a series like that. If Yamcha or Pan or adult Gohan are on-screen, you basically know what kind of situations and gags you'd use with them.

But if there was a wider story arc to do with these characters (that didn't necessarily lead to a 10+ episode fight), I think I'd be more invested.
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

The SoL episodes I feel in Super were only okay (still better than the "canon" stuff) but the self-contained episodes of Dragon Ball and DBZ were generally well done so if they can put up something like those then we'd all be happy.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

A show about magical aliens trying to do normal people things? Sign me up.

In my experience, SOL only works when you already have an established cast you can work with and like. It's why I can't stand shows like K-On.

Despite enjoying to watch the slice of life episodes/scenes in Super, I wouldn't want the series to be all about it and I wouldn't watch it because it would become boring and unappealing, at least to myself.

Yes, I would. They're very interesting to me because I'm more a fan of DB characters than of their fights.

Well, I love Dragon Ball because I love the characters, so seeing them do more than just punch and kick the shit out of other people should be fun. It could also lead to interesting character development outside of the typical bad guy turned good or "I lost but I'm gonna be the best some day". That's not to say you can't have fights in this, sincethe characters are martial artists, so fighting kinda is their life.
It all depends what the show is trying to convey. If it's concentrated one off episodes just setting out to be funny it could work but it would get stale quickly. If their life is actually affected and the funny stuff they do/happens to them changes the characters it would be better.

Is it as well made as a late night Otaku series, especially something from Douga Koubou or Kyouto Animation? Then yes.

But in spite of that phrase, Seinfeld episodes had plots and one's that were sometimes relatable (e.g. getting lost in a parking lost, waiting forever to get a table in a restaurant).

I don't think I'd be interested in an entire series like this. Slice of life episodes should have a point in an action show.

Definitely. The slice of life episodes are the best parts about Super. I wouldn't mind a few small / gag fights with no real plot though

Most certainly. A slice of life series could give so many more characters a chance to be relevant, and with the necessary quality control we could get some great comedic stories. It could be a Simpsons-type show with Saiyans, Nameks, and Gods in the mix, and on a multiversal scale.
