I really don't know why I checked this out... God it was terrible. Schemmel is such a terrible actor, Goten sounds like a Powerpuff Girl, Buu still has the voice of a mentally retarded child. Beerus and Whis are the only good voices this dub ever produced...

I wouldn't say he is terrible, but gosh is he trying to make his Goku sound like Nozawa's? Cause it sounds forced to me he doing Goku with his voice way too relaxed. But that's just a nitpick. Also don't agree with Beerus and Whis being the only good voices in this dub.

Schemmel's voice changed around the original dub of the Buu saga way back in the early 2000's when he really got into Goku's character better after playing him in Season 3 and the Cell arc. This continued into the redub of Seasons 1-2, the movies, and when teen Goku appeared at the end of Dragonball.

Then when Kai came around, whether it be because of better direction or Schemmel himself, he started to try to sound more like Nozawa. Or at least as close as he could. That's what he's still doing in Super now.

Well to be fair its still mostly the same voice cast from the last 15 years. And even if they're all improved dramatically over the last two decades, if people didn't like the sound of their voices back then, they wouldn't think differently.

There's never going to be a dub that's universally approved of, just like there's never going to be an original Japanese version of an anime that's universally approved of. It's all subjective.

I would say I hated FUNi's DBZ voice actors back in 1999 when they started but the voices have improved a lot over the years. I'd say it got better when they began DBZ Kai. Vegeta's voice compared to DBZ and now Kai / Super is way better. Same goes for Piccolo too. The only ones I can't stand is Kaioh-sama (King Kai) and Ox King.

I don't know. Sabat's Piccolo still sounded inconsistent and his Vegeta went from a terrible Drummond impression to a guy with a frog stuck on his throat. In Kai, he sounds more comfortable, more than he ever did in Z.

Well those episodes were dubbed nearly a decade apart. But I think most of the performances in the Buu arc dub were fairly well done. Chris Sabat's Vegeta is much different there than when he first started, and all the other voices start sounding more natural like Krillin, Goku, etc.

How is Schemmel a terrible actor?

He can't act? He either makes weird pauses between words or reads a line too fast. Sometimes the former is caused by the latter. Nothing sounds natural about his reading.

I don't know why I get called a troll. Seems people can't help but take it personal when a bunch of people who don't care about them aren't good at their jobs.

FUNimation's dubbing technique also changed when Kai came around as they listen to the JPN lines before they do theirs which could also be why Sean has improved so much too along with better direction.

Oh no doubt but I think we're as close as we've ever been right now in terms of acceptance for the JPN and dub.

Honestly, the dub of the first episode let me down. It was below Kai level in my opinion. I don't care how experienced the voice actors get if they're still going to include "superhero" Goku lines in the show to appeal to the Toonami nostalgia fans. Also Chi Chi seemed a little off. It's probably a one time thing though, and I hope the rest of the dub can at least reach Kai level.

Buu Kai was much better.

Here are my thoughts on the "superhero line" that Goku had in the dub's first episode: it honestly didn't bother me.

Firstly, I'm not saying this automatically makes it OK, but as we saw in the credits, somebody at Toei (namely, Lisa Yamatoya) signed off on that line. Of course, I know Yamatoya isn't Akira Toriyama, but it's still somebody from the company who made the original show. Secondly, while I do believe there is such a thing as over-doing it--which the dub has done in the past, no doubt--I don't believe it's out-of-character for Goku to care about his family members, or, for that matter, other people. FUNimation may have a history of over-emphasizing Goku's more Superman-like moments, but it's not as though Goku didn't have moments like that in the original Japanese version.

So, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and if you found that line to be bothersome, that's a totally valid opinion to have, I'm just saying it didn't really bother me that much. Sometimes I think his "Superman lines" in the dub just kind of get to us more than they normally would because it brings back bad memories of a time when FUNimation didn't really get the character yet.

"Superman" is simply used in this case because it seems to be the point of reference that most people use to point out moments in the dub where Goku cares more about others than himself. The most common point of criticism regarding FUNimation's earlier interpretation of the character was that they wrote him as somebody who cared about protecting other people, and not fighting for the sake of fighting. In other words, the common beef was that he needed to sound more selfish in the dub. Whenever he didn't sound selfish and voiced concern about protecting others (or lecturing about morality) in the dub, it seems that people called those moments "Superman moments."

So, if we want to forgo the use of the name Superman, I would re-phrase what I said earlier to simply indicate that Goku is not entirely selfish, not even in the Japanese version.

One line doesn't make it Kai level? Come on man that's harsh it was a pretty insignificant line too he was talking to Goten. Hell in Kai his sacrifice to Cell was more "heroic" than the JPN so again saying it is below Kai is pretty harsh. These moments will happen time to time but nothing will be as significant as "I am hope".
Also they didn't start dubbing the show with the Toonami thing in mind since we found out they had to record edited dialogue which meant where it would broadcast was still mia at the point they started dubbing back in July.
