Bootleg subtitles

Post by NeptuneKai » Fri Jun 15, 2007 7:18 pm

I was just wondering after seeing this subject come up in another thread about the blue bootleg box sets of Dragonball Z, how bad are the subtitles? The way people talk it seems as though its 10X worse then the Animelabs translations. If anyone can give me an example of there bad subtitles I would be very grateful.
(I'm sorry if this is against the rules)

The translator can't tell who is who when it comes to Gohan/Goku/Yamucha, and Kinto'un is called the "Candy Cloud."

Ah that seems like it may be difficult to watch, with the name mix ups and all.
Not that I was planning to buy the set, does anyone know the name or company of the people who subbed these boxsets?

On my DB set, let's see here...
The theme song changes its translation three times, (one of my favorites being "we shall fly a heli-copter today" in place of "magic cloud machine" or something, don't have the reference on hand). Yamcha has been called Yumcha, Yamucha, Yamcha, and probably one other. Goku has stayed consistent from my memory. Krillin, let' see here... Krullin, Kulilin,

And MY two personal favorites... "what do you think you?re doing?" (ACTUAL mistake!), and Mr. Unreasonable (Bacterian in VIZ novels.)

Vegeta was always called Dende, Buu was Poo or "the Monster", Yamcha was Yincha, and Master Roshi was Master Goten.

In the Cell arc, Cell was called "Super" and the Kamehameha "Roshi Wave".

Those translations sort of remind me of the unbearable and unreadable English translated Final Bout manual and Ultimate Battle 22 manual, they managed to screw up just about everyone’s name and attacks.

It was a quick job done by people who don't speak English fluently for people who don't speak English fluently. I'm not surprised by the quality so much as why it was subbed at all.

I have bootleg subtitles...and I can't help but notice multiple technique names, and other misstranslations sound like blatant sexual refferences on occasion, yet usually just...flat out unatural. I can take comfort in the fact that it's nowhere near as bad as the Naruto bootlegs...you know they actually called Naruto "burple mingren"?

How on earth did they get "Burple mingren" out of Naruto?

The same way you get "Magical Sonnies" out of Pokemon? >_>

(I've got a bootleg of the second Pokemon movie. However, I own the official Australian release too, which has English, French, Italian, German and Dutch, but not Japanese. XD )

Or the same way they could get "Haingis" out of Sanji from One Piece? Those HK-subs just straight out suck. They don't seem to care at all about having translations that are even REMOTELY correct.

It's a bootleg, why should they care?

It's not so much that they don't care, it's that you have people translating from Japanese to Chinese and then to English. And they're usually not very good at English at that. So you can see how messed up things get along the way. It's like an anime version the game "telephone". :P

B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."
