High Def Update (09:22 AM EDT):
The folks at IGN have a new article up that talks a bit about a few of the companies they contacted regarding high definition releases. All of the companies have been cagey to one extent or another except for Bandai Visual USA. The question about their interest in high definition came up a lot during Anime Expo but the general point was that the install base simply isn't enough for most of them to want to take a dip in that pool yet in addition to the high costs. This is similar to when DVD came out for the most part with the exception that Pioneer had an actual content side that included anime back then. Pioneer was strong on the DVD side in comparison to most everyone else.

The article starts off by looking at a few companies and FUNimation was surprisingly candid about their intentions. "At this point, we are in the Blu-ray camp. We started researching this about a year-and-a-half ago, actually," explains Ward Thomas, Senior VP of Sales and Operations at FUNimation. "We feel that the fanbase and our customers are very much trailblazers on the technology side, so it's something we wanted to get involved in right away. We really felt that the introduction of the PlayStation 3 last year was kind of a foray for our customers and fans to at least get into the next-gen platforms."

Interestingly enough, they also cite the recent news by Blockbuster as another reason for keeping their intentions there as the nationwide chain has expanded Blu-ray rentals from 250 store to 1750 stores. HD DVD is available at 250 stores and both are available at their online store.

But it doesn't really make a different to DBZ fans. We don't need to see crap in a higher definition. But at least they're going for BluRay which technically is a better format.

Amen.

Personally, I kind of want Blu Ray to win as well, because I think it primarily has a larger storage capacity (better/more video). But, I think HD-DVD has mandatory better audio (although ac3 is pretty good as it stands).

However, the HD-DVD players are dropping in price fast, I think they are in better position to "win the race" ...

Although I won't buy a player unless the war is decided, or the war goes the way of DVD+R and DVD-R ... and I'll just have a drive that does both.

Although I would LOVE for someone to start a poll to see who has a 1080p (or 720p) widescreen TV. Doesn't make a difference if you have a PS3 or not without the TV.

Says who precisely? Just because it had a larger storage capacity, doesn't mean it's "technically a better format". Then again, from posts of yours I've read in the past you're acutely biased so whatever.

I disagree. This article pretty much sums up the main points. I was gonna type up my own explanation, then I realized Bill Hunt said it with more authority than I ever could ;)

Basically, one format needs to win or neither will. Personally, I own Blu-Ray but have seen both formats and have no desire to adopt the HD-DVD format. And for the record, I own a 720p television, and have for 3 years now. I'll probably upgrade when I finish paying off my car, but for right now the quality that Blu-Ray provides when downscaled to 720p is already amazing.

Anyway, yes. DragonBall Z would look horrible in any HD format with the masters FUNimation created. Thankfully, there's the DragonBox singles which look beautiful when upscaled to whatever-the-hell-you-want (until Toei decides to re-telecine the series in...err, 2015? ;)).

Well... there are players now that play both HD-DVDs AND Blu-Ray discs....

I can't wait for Blu-Ray DBZ from Funimation! The screen will be cropped to a 10 x 10 inch square in the middle so you can focus on the action!
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

Yep, and my home theatre can play both SACD and DVDA. Notice how neither of those exactly took off and claimed the majority marketshare ;p

What is interesting here is that a year-and-a-half ago is roughly 5 to 6 months before we heard of the new Remastered Box sets now being pushed out? In other words, this is evidence that FUNI's decision to go wide screen was influenced by going HD in the future.

A few of us pointed that out a while back as well seeing how FUNI could save money that way (pat yourselves on the back people who said that...)

Jeez, FUNi was planning for the distant future this time. My hope for a proper release in Region 1 has diminished even further. Oh well, even if they planned this out, there's still a chance they'll change their plans; they always do.

On a semi-on-topic note, Season 3 isn't on Amazon anymore. It's not on Z-Store either. Very interesting development....

Don't worry. It's still coming out. Lance Heiskell on the AnimeonDVD.com forums responded to someone asking if it was cancelled with: "Definite NO. Hotcakes, baby. Hotcakes."

Season 3 is still on the way. The worst news that might happen is it being delayed.

Wow, I go to those forums almost every day. How did I miss that thread?

Heh, I love that reply, though. "Hell NO they're not cancelled! Why make them better when they're selling like hotcakes?! Boo-yah!" Honestly, isn't that a little rude for him to say, especially on a board where FUNi's video quality is taken so seriously? :?

It's official: FUNi just doesn't care anymore.

Interesting news about that, btw.
I don't know if this is entirely accurate. But I was reading some stuff on ANN a while back and...
Fans then got the chance to learn about some of Funimation's upcoming releases. The third season of Dragonball Z will be released on September 18. It will include 750 minutes of uncut episodes, and includes the option to view the discs in “marathon play” mode.

Double feature? With all the space on Blu-Ray discs couldn't they put all three Broli movies on one disc? I wonder if it'll be the "Remastered" footage.

Well, considering they showed off movie eight footage during that featurette on the season one boxset, it could very well be the "remastered" version.

With the use of Blu-ray (a more advanced version of the DVD I guess...is this right?) they are leaving out a large group of people from the small group of fans they have. I can only imagine how bad it's going to be when only a small number of people buy it. It's only going to be the more hardcore ones after all, because Funimation has little idea of what the word 'Remastered' means. They failed twice with the boxsets and with the Mexican dub ex lusive (both the one that came out in the US and the one that came out in Mexico) due to the fact that they had shitty masters to work with (which had little to do with the final product since they were able to technically call them Japanese masters, which they were in name only). I don't care about this and I have given up on them to provide a good version of Dragonball Z with the Mexican dub (or subs for the original Japanese track, which I can forget about already-this is Funi after all.) This just means that it's another big flop and I hope they prove me wrong and do somthing right, even if it's only for the Blu-ray player. I would hate however, to see folks destroy their expensive Blu-ray players in disgust from watching it if it's bad. Oh well, such is life.

I don't get why they're releasing two of the three Broli movies. That makes no sense. Why would they just release two of them rather than all three?

Because this is Funi. Sense: they make none.
